COMPLETE SONGLIST FOR THE SUN ALSO RISES (EP221)

Sacrifice night is here, and when The Sun Also Rises we know for sure that not everyone will be alive to see it. This is the Vampire Diaries after all, and if there’s one thing they like best after shocking us with alarming twists (see last week where we were whammied with several) it’s shocking us all with a few deaths here and there. Even if your favourite character survives, there are going to be consequences for everyone, and the angst quota is going to be high. We’d suggest hiding behind the sofa, but Klaus will still get you…

Watch and then swing by here to rate the new episode of The Vampire Diaries. Spoilers are welcome in the comments, though if you want some more in-depth discussion then head on over to the forums! (You’ll need to register, but it takes two seconds.)

You can also participate in the chatroom, and we have a channel specifically for discussing the episode live – just type /join #tvdlivechat when you’re in the main chatroom. You don’t need to be a member of the forums to join in, just choose your nickname and start chatting.

Quick guide to the poll options: No, you’re not having a bout of deja vu, this week it’s an obligatory sunrise – they do generally follow sunsets, after all. 5 sunrises = LOVE. 1 sunrise = MEH.

That’s what I was thinking… didn’t Elijah tell Damon that he rendered Elena useless? I thought that meant useless to the sacrifice… but guess it worked anyway. Maybe because even though she had vampire blood, she wasn’t actually a vampire so it didn’t matter.

  • Olivia

I was kind of wondering that too… but I think maybe because Alaric understood right away what had happened while Jeremy still had a confused look on his face. Also maybe because it’s the third parent Jeremy has lost.

  • emjem24

I was really bummed about this episode. I really loved Jenna and it just broke my heart that the writers killed her off. I know that VPD is just a show but Jenna just seemed like a genuine character and person on the show.

Now, Jules, John, even Greta… I can understand their deaths but Jenna…. it’s just not right.

  • Anonymous

    Hi Olivia,

Elijah did not say Elena was rendered useless, just his resurrection elixir because she had vampire blood in her system. The elixir will not work on a vampire.

  • Ellen

Elijah meant that the elixir was rendered useless, not Elena.

  • eve

Just watched it again…yep Jenna’s dead:( Why did Stefan say Klaus woud want him…hope they tell us next week. As for Caroline, sorry to say this but if she would have just listened to Damon and got the hell out of there nothing would have happened to him. But, noooo she was so hell bent on helping Tyler. She really got on my nerves…happy Caroline.

I watched the episode 2or 3times, and even though I am very very tired of work, I would like to state my opinion, though I will be watching the last 2 episodes this weekend again, makes more sense to me, as it is all happening in one day/night.I trusted Elijah, but am not disappointed about the decision he made, because I think he really wanted to kill Klaus, but then that jerk came up with the whole “the bodies of our family can be found”. Here is the difference between those two brothers. Elijah cares! “Its a common mistake, I was told and I won’t make it again”. But he did make the mistake again. I am sure Klaus will die at some point in future and I am sure he will be killed by Alaric, Jeremy or even Elijah. Something went wrong in the ritual, I do not think it ended 100% as Klaus thought it would end for him. There is a flaw in his plan. We will see it in the next season.

I am really very sad that Aunt Jenna died. And why did Klaus not trade her for Stefan? Because he is a sadistic selfcentered psychopath, no feeling of guilt, no doubts! He just wants to see a few people suffer and enjoys his tremendous power. Either way it would have sucked the choice “Stefan or Elena”.

I am glad to see a development for Caroline and Tylers relationship. Matt can go to…I don’t know. He is so boring and I can’t find the right word for him and his ally Sher Forbes. She is really a pain in the ass. I don’t think Tyler was really aware that he bit Damon. I mean during such a transformation I think you really have enough other problems and emotions are heightened. I refer to Harry Potter Part 3. Prof Lupin said “my friends turned into animagi so that they could be with me during my werewolf phase”. Lupin turned on one of his friend Sirius Black and his students after transformation whileleaving the Whomping Willow.

The other deaths: I felt glee when bitch Greta was killed by Damon. WOW! One twist. I felt sorry for Jules, even though I didn’t like her. Sorry for the pain of torture she went through. Not for her death. And someone wrote John is the “Severus Snape” of the show. That is an amazing statement. Because John really suprised me. Great act of courage & the will to make a decision.

Last not least, I am weary of all this “if Damon dies I quit the show” crap. Then quit the show, who cares! There are enough spectators who will watch it worldwide, even without whining I love Damon fans. Its a great show TVD and its not all Damon! All actors are doing a terrific job, ALL!!! Take it or leave it!Its my opinion and I am living in a free country and thank God not in the new order of Klaus.

To all TVD fans: I wish everybody a nice weekend and have lots of fun and suspense with the next episode. We share one hobby, a great TV show.

Small mistake I wrote previously. Correcting it now. Either way it would have sucked the choice”Stefan or Jenna”.

  • Anonymous

I watched ep 21 again. I don’t think Tyler bit Damon; he bit him but did not reach the skin, it was Klaus who bit Damon. And therefore it is different from Rose’s bite. That is why Damon will survive. It is a vampire-hybrid with dormant werewolf part that bit another vampire So there will be a cure.Bonnie will take care of it.

The graveyard scene and John’s letter tore me apart.

What are the consequences of the sacrifice ritual???Nobody really knows. But more people will die next week. That is sure.

The two british vampires Klaus and Elijah, smooth and polite till the end; Klaus thanks Elena before he kills her and Elijah apologizes before he takes off with his brother.

Never has a series fascinated me this much. I’m really exhausted. Glad that there will be a break after next week’s episode. I need it.

  • CD

Epic episode leaving possibility of exciting developments for season 3. I love the idea of finding out about, and the potential revival of, the family of Originals. I love the mythology of VD, the love triangle is not the drawcard for me at all – and certainly not the sidetaking. I hope we will find out more about the doppleganger origins. Another thought, Klaus didn’t fully transform as he was interupted so that will also be a storyline I’d imagine? Keen to see more Elijah – maybe Elena will be drawn more into the originals world, not as a threat, but as an equal/companion type? Or a plaything, who knows. Surely the curse cannot be broken again?

I think also it will delve into the compatibility of vampires and wolves not only via Klaus but also Caroline and Tyler.
Finally, perhaps Elena looked at Damon like that in the graveyard because the compulsion was temporarily broken when she died. Also think that Damon wants to bite her in the next promo..

Anyway, many questions as usual but always love it – looking forward to seeing Stefan’s part in the Klaus masterplan.

  • Canderella

Thank you. I take this kind of a compliment, cause I had such an aching stomach and strange mixture of love and pain in my heart myslef that I needed to put it down. Kinda nice that it somehow touched you. Couldn’t not cry during the episode – it was so tense, and waiting for what the next episode is about to bring to us…

  • Anonymous

I don’t remember crying over a vampire diaries scene yet although I’m
totally crazy about this show, but with the funerals one I cried more rewatching
it for the second and third time that I did when I first saw the
episode. Elena heading towards her parents’ grave brought the tears, and
the the look on BONNIE’s face made me lose it completely. I didn’t
think I’d ever say that but Bonnie Bennet got me crying! Again and again
    and again, with ONE LOOK!

Anyway I had several things coming to my mind while watching:

    - They totally pulled a ‘vicky’ on us with Jenna!

    - Who is the guardian of Elena and Jeremy now? Is jeremy gonna go live in the SBH with Elena or is Elena going back to her family’s house?

    - I’m not shipping Tyler and Caroline, but after this episode all that Matt can do to redeem himself is to save Caroline’s life and die in the process!

    - Caroline is all kind of wonderful. Thanks to Candice who make this character SO perfect. She has her flaws but you can’t help but love her just like she is…

    - I think they didn’t exploit Greta’s character enough. I though she would turn agains Klaus sometimes during the sacrifice and take him down. Did she even know that her family died to save her before damon killed her?

-Why did jenna and John hated each other? Still they both gave their lives for Elena. They have this in common.

    - Are they sure that the ring won’t work on Elena? Cause that culd have been useful since the beginning of this season!

    - What are Klaus’ plans for Stefan?

Stefan should have asked Elijah to give him his WORD that he wouldn’t back down and spare Klaus. Didn’t Elena teach him anything?

    - Is there gonna have any character left for a 4th season of this show?

  • Canderella

Hey there, did anyone had a bad night like me? Thinking about that last episode all the time…? Still seeing Damon walk into that sunset/sunrise while closing your eyes? Well, I did.

But also had a lot of thoughts about the storyline as well ;) and if I actually really liked this episode. For me it was like divided in bad parts and brilliant ones. And I had the impression all episode was built up for the funeral / cemetry ending. So much action and pain and grief leading up the emotional teardown – Elena burying the last ones of her family, except for Jeremy, touching (confessing?) looks between Elena and Damon and the revelation of Damon’s upcoming death to Stefan. Wished I could write it more properly in English, but this is all I can.

Well, where to start? Mabe with that I don’t like all that talk that Damon cannot die for popular reasons, for ratings, for people wanting Ian/Damon in that show. Sort of sick of it. If he has to die, he will. Depends on the story, on how it evolves. When it has to be that way I will break down and cry for at least three days. A story has a life of itself and sometimes you cannot put it differently when it is going that way. Like killing Vicky. Cruel, but it had to be like that. Don’t get me wrong, I do not want Damon to die – but I will accept it when it is inevitable. As long as we have epic moment like the last scenes – I will just play, stop and rewind for ever! And again, already used to it, mostly my favorite characters die at the end or some point in between the story of a book or film. That’s usually what bad guys do: go down in a blaze of glory…

Have to go on talking some more about Damon. You know, it’s a specific way I like him to look, shot in a certain light and angle and that episode had a few of very smashing views on him, which I just loved. Loved the black dress with this dark blue shirt – just dying cool. Still don’t like his haircut – being very perfectionistic about that I think they give him like a technically proper cut which just don’t fit to his face. Sorry folks, my hairdresser can do better.

Now some thoughts about the show, the unpleasant ones which I didn’t like or understand.

    1) What happened to that birthground thing? Didn’t they talk before that the sacrifice had to take place where the Doppelgänger was born?

    2) What about that mystical place where all the witches were burned. Thought there were some action which had to take place there as well. Was it enough for Bonnie just being their? Like the docking station giving power to my iPhone?

    3) Where the heck was Elijah last episodes after he went? Still no explanation on that.

    4) They killed Jenna – and then what? Was it her blood that Greta poured from the two cups or did Jenna just have to lie on that stone beneath the sacrifice stone/wooden “bucket” to make that sacrifice work?

    5) When Damon heard from Alaric that his brother wants to make this exchange against Jenna he headed outside mumbling something about cleaning up his mess (after he pulled out his fist from the wall ;) And then – went where?! Next scene he was leaning against the wall making fun of Uncle John believing in mambo jumbo. .. .wtf? Didn’t get that at all. Thought he went to the sacrifice place to keep Stefan from doing it

    6) When Stefan came up with the idea of him being the vampire for the sacrifice I was totally pissed. Admit it. Fast thinker, huh? If Klaus wanted him, he had him already. What made him think Klaus would agree to this. By looking severly in his eyes? But what really annoyed me was the fact that Damon tried everything to safe Elena and was willing to sacrifice himself long before Stefan caught a glimpse but that it would be STEFAN who’d be the hero, standing in that spotlight of the sacrifice place, sacrificing himself in front of Elena’s eyes – and no one knowing about Damon trying to do it all along. That would have really sucked. Glad Klaus didn’t play along.

    7) If they hadn’t done that “Uncle John giving Elena his spirit/life energy/whatever spell”, they would have been there in time saving Jenna life – wouldn’t they? Does that make Elena’s humanity more valuable than Jenna’s life?

    8)

Why didn’t they think of it before: no 2nd witch, no sacrifice. It
was so easy for Damon to kill Greta. It really was TOO easy.

    9) Didn’t like the special effects of the fire at all. They looked really cheap.

    10) Did I see much motion in Alaric eyes? Kind of missed that, thought he kind of breaks down after Jenna’s death. Maybe something yet to come.

    Probably missed some points still.

The episode was so epic and so crappy at the same time I thought.

But still I would rate it a 4/5 because it also had so many glorious moments that I loved.

Talked about that whole cemetry scene alread in my recent post, but I also loved Jeremy and Elena together preparing for the funeral. He really grew up – very strong bonding between the two. I also liked Uncle Johns letter, even though I really detested him from the very beginning. His letter indicates strongly what will happen the next seasons. Elena definately having a baby in the near future. Her mother Isobel gave birth very young as well as Katherine did. So we will have to look out for the father… Matt? Alaric? Klaus? Someone we haven’t met before…? Still I can’t really imagine Elena with a big belly. But maybe in Season 6 I will have grown to it… :D

I also liked that Elijah didn’t ripp Klaus heart out. Already wondered how they will solve this – them surviving to play big parts in next season. So again Klaus played well and had a backup plan. He knew his brohter was his most dangerous enemy so he already reckoned with his revenge and a way to pull him back. Very smart.

And honestly – can you really blame Elijah for not killing Klaus? You really think he should have killed him just because he gave his word to some vampires and humans he just even met? No way – he is a true family man and obviously this is the most important thing for him in his life. He will be truely sorry about it and upright, but no way he could have done it that situation.

And speaking about that it again crosses my mind that there is so many talk about Damon’s intuitions and being right. I love him, but I don’t think that this is true. To me Elijah revealed that he is a man of honour, someone you can trust – even though he did not kill Klaus in the end. But he was about to do it, wasn’t he? No one could foresee that Klaus had such an powerful argument in his backhand. Sorry, to me Elijah at this point is the noble man as he was introduced. So Damon’s intuition was wrong.

Then that Mason thing. He told him “friends” and then stabbed him. Didn’t like that at all. Of course he wasn’t to be trusted and had different plans than taking care of Tyler. But initially his order was to get the moonstone. Don’t you think he tripped Damon and Stefan by telling Sherrif Forbes they were vampires just because Damon started this fight? Kat was mad at him for that – so he did it out of very personal reasons. And then we did find out that he was tough but not very smart – was he? So I think all of that would not have happened if Damon did not stabb him.

    Almost forgot KATHERINE !

She said she had to choose between love and her own life (something like that, can’t quote it exactly, maybe someone can). So what does this mean?!? She wouldn’T get love in her way – love for whom? Damon???? If she said something about caring whatever, I wouldn’t be confused – but love? In that context she could have only meant: Love for Damon -can’t she!? Would love to hear some comment on that for you… I mean this is a real contradiction to what we’ve seen all season long…

Sorry for the long post. Just couldn’t stop writing. So many thoughts on this episode. And so much love for all the other TVD addicts around the word…

  • Ellen

What a dramatic episode!!! There is one thing that bothers me about the whole Damon/werewolf bite thing. I have rewatched that scene several times and I did not see where Tyler actually bit him. Sure he was on top of him, TRYING to bite him, but I don’t see where he actually succeeded. I think someone else speculated on this below that maybe it was Klaus that bit him. He did send Kat out of the room and we do know that there was animosity between the two. I don’t think that they will kill Damon off. I’m thinking that the cure lies with Klaus and that he is going to use this fact as leverage for Stefan to do what he wants. He already said that he has plans for him.

Sorry to see Jenna die. She was a good person, but I thought it was very smart of her to attack the witch. She knew that she was going to die anyway and she did tell Elena that she knew what she had to do. Very smart!!!

I believe Elijah is an honorable man and did not want to betray the others. The only thing that saved Klaus was Klaus giving him his WORD that the bodies of their family were safe. I’m guessing that Season 3 is going to be a quest for Elijah to retrieve the bodies (possibly pulling out the daggers? and resurrecting the originals?).

What can I say about Bonnie? She was totally BAD ASS!!! Absolutely fantastic. I love her character, but in the long run, I think that Damon was right all along. They should have let Bonnie kill Klaus earlier that day. If they had, Bonnie would have been dead but Jenna, John and Jules would still be alive and Damon wouldn’t be knocking on heaven’s/hell’s door. I would hate to see Bonnie go, but she has said it herself that she knew what her role in all of this was.

John – Finally this schmuck makes up for his past acts and saves his daughter’s life. This is the only thing that he could have done that would redeem him in my eyes.

Alaric – Now that his apartment has been taken over by Klaus, will he move in to the Gilbert’s and become their guardian? He would technically be Elena’s step-dad, having been married to Isobel.

Caroline/Tyler – I love them as a couple. They both had a rocky start with Caroline being so shallow and Tyler being a dick. They have both overcome so much and I think they will be great together. When did Tyler get so dag gone HOT? Wow – he was looking good in this past episode.

Well the finale is upon us and I’m sure that I will go through a whole box of Kleenex. I don’t know how they are going to sort this all out but am looking forward to the ride.

  • Rose-Petals

Tyler did bit Damon, although you can’t really tell it was just before Damon pulled him off. When Tyler was snaping his teeth back and forthhe bit Damon and if you pay close attention you can hear the bit noise in the background, which is probably why Caroline asked Damon if he is ok.

  • Ellen

I just watched it again and I just can’t tell if it was him or not. It doesn’t look like his mouth got close enough and the noise sounded like the other noises from Tyler’s transformation. I’m still confused on this point.

  • Anonymous

Hi @Georgia_Peach, I agree to everything you said. I love the character of Damon as you do and I think he and (we fans) had enough to endure this season. I hope that the personal sacrifice Stefan has to do in the final brings him to take inconvenient steps for a change. Damon – being weakend like hell – won´t be able to do anything.

He did not only offer to give everything he had. He also did that. He showed emotion, tried to be the better man, altough it´s completely against his nature, he was humiliated, hit, nobody believed him (altough he was right – Elijah lied) and the loves of his life refused him.

And what about Stefan? He was understanding and empathic – right. But he wasn´t the one who had to fight.

I hope they won´t leave us until September with the question weather Stefan finds a cure or not. Altough I can´t imagine that they are really going to let Damon die. That would damage the show severely.

  • Anonymous

You´r right. Ian even managed to walk sadly. His whole body language is great. The scene looked like he´d walk this way for a last time and out of the show. (What I hope will never happen!)

  • Anonymous

I don´t think he left out Ric. I think they understand each other without talking as a part of their “bromance”. He told Jeremy that he is sorry because he looked so confused.

  • Anonymous

but since he bit Damon during his transformation and not while he was on full werewolf mode, maybe it’s going to play differently that for rose. I think they will find a way to save damon but for that he’ll have to be human again or something and then elena will be torn because as she said she doesn’t want to be a vampire, she wants to grow old and have children. It would be a possiblibity with human damon then but not with vampire stefan…

  • LTVD

Does anybody think elena remembers being compelled now? That scene at the funeral between her and damon led me to believe that she might. Just from the simple exchange of glances. Do you think it is possible because she died with his blood in her system that she may remember? I hope so!

  • Ellen

I like the way you think mystk. I read a spoiler somewhere that said that Stefan would have to make a great personal sacrifice. It would make sense that he would have to give up the love of his life in order to save his brother. Of course it could also mean that he has to give up his humanity. Who knows what Klaus has got in store for him. We know that he is a baddie!!!

  • Ellen

OMG I did not think of that but I’ll bet your right!!! That would definitely explain “the look”. I have been scratching my head since Thursday night on that one.

  • LTVD

    @ Ellen
I was kind of wondering what “the look” was about as well. After watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltkk1JNiG74 I kind of thought that maybe she remembered… interesting thought for sure. Can’t wait until next thursday !

  • CanadianTVDFan

Fair enough. Hope so. Love the bromance. :)

  • Rose-Petals

I was thinking about Stefan’s personnal sacrfice and while it could be Elena it can also be killing. Stefan hates having people die especially by his hands. I think that Stefan will have to kill someone and that it will be Sherif Forbes. In the despription it saids that Sheif Forbes makes a deadly mistake when trying to protect everyone and in the preview we sees that she pulls the trigger. Now that Sheif Forbes knows Damon is a vampire I think that she will try to kill him resulting in Stefan having to kills her to save Damon.

  • Rose-Petals

or Stefan will have to personally kill Damon

  • Rose-Petals

or Stefan will have to personally kill Damon

  • Anonymous

I believe that Elijah is a man of his word and that he wanted to go through with the Klaus kill till the end. He is a man of honor. But not Klaus. I remember an episode – think it was ep 19 – when he said the last thing he needed was for Elijah to come back to life (the dagger to be pulled out). That pretty much says everything. He was afraid that Elijah was going to cross his plans. The big question is was he bluffing or not, when he said the bodies could be found? Season 3 will give answers. Furthermore I do not believe that Elijah loves Klaus. He did yes, but not anymore. He saved him because there was a tiny light of hope that he can find the bodies of the family.

  • Caroline

I sobbed all night long after watching this episode. I cannot believe Jenna is gone. Just like that. She was honestly one of my favorite characters. So sad to see her gone. Beautifully sad ending to the episode. Love the cover of Skinny Love!

  • Caroline

By the way, Love you Sarah Canning! Will miss you on this crazy wonderful show!

  • Ellen

It’s all so heart-wrenching!!! I love these characters and you just hate to see any of them go (except for John and Jules, IMO). I also read that Caroline’s father is going to show up next season, so it would make sense that Liz has to die.

  • Ellen

I hope it doesn’t come to that. sighs

  • Little-miss-sammy

I think this episode really made both John & Jules look alot more human & a lil more likeable. Jules appologises for what she did explaining she was just trying to help tyler & John proves how much he cares for Elana, it was very touching I cant say Im suprised by Elijah, its his family & being a man of honour he would probably believe he owes it to them & I think even Stephen or Damon would do the same for Elana. I dont think this makes him a bad guy as for say just shows his loyalty to his family but I wouldnt be suprised if Klous kills him anyways….

  • Olivia

I just let out a big “Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” when I read this… OK that makes more sense. Thanks :)

  • Olivia

Thank you for clarifying! Seriously, I don’t know how I missed that!

  • Vampfan

@05ab8838266c9f30037d1a4d8b883c1c:disqus That didn’t stop what happened in the OC, remember Mischa Barton, she was a core character, yet she dies in the series, and the show went downhill from there!

  • Jesusreynosa

Oooooooooo now i understand how he died at the end

  • Jesusreynosa80

Since elina was going to come back to life after death than why didnt she kill herself on the sacrifice and klaus wouldnt have his human.

I’m kind of wondering if Sheriff Forbes’ deadly mistake is trying to kill Damon while he’s delusional and ends up being attacked by him. Or maybe ends up killing someone else on accident.
