Elijah: As I Lay Dying (EP222)It’s the summer hiatus – and IT SUCKS. So to help wile away those lonely TVD-less hours as we await Vampire Diaries Season 3, we’ve rounded up a slew of guest bloggers (and huge Vampire Diaries fans) for a series called Ripping Open TVD. Each blogger will be focusing on one particular aspect of what we’ve just experienced in Vampire Diaries Season 2 and adding a hefty dose of Season 3 speculation. Remember: These are guest posts, so these are the opinions of the person writing them, not necessarily Vampire-Diaries.net. Cool? Cool. This week, Cin & Christina of the Salvatore Boarding House explore the past, present, and possible future of everyone’s favorite heart-snatching bad ass Original: Elijah.

Boy, those Original vamps sure opened up a can of worms, didn’t they? Last summer, all we could think or speculate about was what kind of havoc Katherine was going to rain down upon the once-sleepy town of Mystic Falls. But now? The introduction of the Original vampires has us running mental marathons as we head into Season 3, and no Original has captured our attention more than Elijah. The faint smile. The precise pronunciation. The deftness with which he extracts vital organs. Not to mention the part, DEAR LORD, THE PART! We never stood a chance. He had us at, “Hello, there.”

Elijah: Rose (EP208)We could wax poetic for hours about what Elijah does that makes him such a great character, or why he is the true dark horse in The Vampire Diaries race – that minor character that unexpectedly captures more attention than even the writers bargained for. Elijah is the vampire that other vamps (like Damon) want to be and the fans want to see. He’s powerful, menacing, and he can speak volumes with a single weighted glance. But there’s also a hint of depth and complexity just begging to be revealed. So when he kept getting stabbed in Season 2, we believed it was a test. Like Old Testament Job, we’re being tested and have to rely on not much more than blind faith that he will be back to us all very soon. (Please, show, STOP THE MADNESS.)

We all have our opinions on Elijah, and the only right opinion is that he’s awesome. (We kid, we kid. But seriously.) But we have questions. What drives or motivates him? We can’t believe that honor and promises alone have kept him alive and vibrant for over a thousand years. So, what has? One thing The Vampire Diaries does almost too well is open up possibilities – limitless possibilities. It’s like an Elijah Choose Your Own Adventure. How his past influenced and shaped Elijah, what’s happening now and what lies ahead – that’s the story we’re dying for. To continue, turn to page 82…

The Adventure Begins
When Daddy Original discovered that one of his children was not of his bloodline, but instead born of betrayal, his honor and that of his family was compromised. He exacted vengeance and most likely set in motion the werewolf/vampire feud that has festered and grown in the time since. It was during this time that family lines were probably drawn – Elijah and Niklaus on one side and everyone else on the other. In standing so closely to Klaus, Elijah found himself alienated from the remainder of his family. Then the witches got involved (or were they employed?) to summon the curse and prevent Klaus from becoming a werepire hybrid. Nature’s balance was in jeopardy and whatever the motivation, it still had to be restored, or at the very least held in check, and who more likely to want to hold him in check than the rest of his family?

Elijah & Klaus: Klaus (EP219)Even years after they split off from their pack (pun!), Elijah must have seen how out of control Klaus was, so why did he remain so loyal to him? To keep him in check and clean up his messes? To try to subtly tame him and keep the madness at bay? Or did he make a promise to someone long ago that he would stand with Klaus and possibly act as a preservationist for the curse? Or, like we’ve seen with Stefan and Damon, did Elijah once lead Klaus astray, see the error of his ways, and come back with an arm around his brother to protect him? A lot of questions. But when looking at those possible motivations, we can’t help thinking that maybe it was a small bit of all of those factors that bound Elijah to Klaus for so long.

The possibility also arises that Elijah and Klaus shared a Stefan/Elena/Damon type of relationship with the original Petrova, whose blood was used to bind the curse. Wouldn’t that have been interesting? If so, was she used because Elijah chose to help Klaus or showed loyalty to him? Whoever chose her for that first ritual, be it the witches or Daddy Original, she was chosen for a reason. In the spirit of the love triangle, perhaps Klaus and Elijah had some pull to her. Or perhaps the original Petrova was Klaus’ girl, and after the werewolf/vampire thing went down, she was used as a sort of punishment and, because Elijah also loved her, he was a casualty of the ritual as well. Conversely, if she was Elijah’s love, maybe she was chosen solely to punish him because he aligned himself with Klaus. Whatever the true reason, she was used as a consequence for these brothers. Fierce guilt seems like a consistent theme on the show, so maybe. We have also heard it theorized that Elijah’s mother was a Petrova by blood. Seeing as how Mama Original was the one who mixed the werepire cocktail in utero, her blood was already a key ingredient. Hmmmm…

Elijah: Klaus (EP219)Whatever happened when the curse was set in place, it is clear from the 1492 flashbacks that Lord Elijah had become Klaus’ #2 for centuries. He was always by his side, offering counsel, encouragement, a partner in crime (and there were some crimes committed, we’re sure). But it also seems reasonable enough to assume that Elijah was honor-bound to stay by Klaus’ side to make sure he didn’t expose their superhuman nature. At the same time, we think he acted in a way that would keep Klaus trusting him. Everyone knows the way to make a lunatic trust you is to agree with them. So Elijah agreed, he played along and helped plant the “The Curse of the Sun and the Moon” legends. But even as Elijah acted as though he wanted to help Klaus break the true curse, we don’t think he ever expected all of the components to align. Even to an Original vampire, a doppelganger is still a pretty big stretch. And if a doppelganger did in fact exist, what where the chances of Klaus finding the one girl in all the wide world? Whatever blood line the original Petrova belonged to must have been lost or the Brothers Original would have stalked through the centuries waiting for a doppelganger to make an appearance, right? Right.

When Elijah saw Katerina, everything shifted. His look of recognition when he first laid eyes on her was very telling. Was the original Petrova a past lover or a long lost relative? Time will tell, but it is safe to assume that he had deep feelings for whoever it was. He was drawn to Katerina, and whether he meant to or not, developed an affection for her. Or maybe it was a protective streak? It is unclear how or if Elijah truly intended to interfere with Klaus’ plans to break the curse in 1492, but one theory we’ve thrown back and forth is that he actually allowed Katerina to escape Klaus’ ritual when he refused to let Elijah try the elixir that could have saved her life. DRAMA!

Elijah & Katherine: Klaus (EP219)We do know that some time after Katerina’s escape, the relationship between Klaus and Elijah began to sour. They didn’t totally disconnect, but most likely suffered a short-term falling out. Over 500 years later, lesser vampires still thought Elijah was the only direct line to Klaus; Elijah was at least still playing his part, even if he and Klaus knew the truth. Elijah knew that he had to keep Klaus close and was most likely, at least in Klaus’ view, kept in check by the threat against the rest of their Original family, whom Klaus knew were so important to his brother. To make this threat effective, Klaus also had to keep Elijah under close watch. It was some time after this that Klaus must have lost his patience and decided to lock up his kin to punish Elijah, making him think they had suffered the “final death”. Oh, the slow burn of mutual mistrust.

The Plot Thickens
When Klaus began committing familicide, shit got real for Elijah. Real fast. What motivated him to stay alive after hearing of the “final death” of his family at the hands of his closest companion for the better part of a millennium? As Elijah said to Stefan in The Sun Also Rises, “Sometimes there is honor in revenge.” Best served ice cold, my friends.

In the meantime, where and how has Elijah been keeping himself busy? Master of Craigslist aside, we don’t know a single thing about Elijah’s years of limbo. Allow us this moment to tickle your brains. Was he raising alpacas on a farm in Peru? Did he have a harem in Istanbul? Maybe he was a notorious high roller in Monte Carlo. Or perhaps a very reclusive, but amazingly hot, professor at some obscure university (if this is the case, when’s registration?). Elijah could very well have spent his years doing anything anywhere. Elijah is seamlessly adaptable to almost any situation or environment. He’s over one thousand years old, and yet is very current. He wears designer suits, uses cell phones, answers emails. He clearly knows his way around humans, charming his way into houses and hearts.

Elijah: The Sun Also Rises (EP221)Regardless of where he has been or what he has been doing, it is safe to assume that he has always kept an eye on what Klaus was up to and who he was getting up to it with. Elijah knew Greta was one of Klaus’ top witches, which led to Elijah’s enlisting Jonas Martin’s help. Unlike Klaus, Elijah seems to use a less tyrant/henchmen approach. Instead he gets people, witches, etc., to help him because it serves their needs as well. He doesn’t have to make witches feel as if they have lost their control or don’t have any other choice but to help him. Elijah seems to employ the “catch more flies with honey” approach to dealing with people. Vampires and werewolves? Not so much. Charm plays a huge role in who Elijah is and what he is about. He has become the master at creating a false sense of ease in everyone he encounters. That’s how he conned his way into the good graces of the Mrs. Lockwood and into the Gilbert House.

Speaking of which, we have noticed that he seems to be drawn to the fairer sex (hubba-hubba). No, seriously: Elijah likes the ladies. He flirts unabashedly and gravitates towards them in mixed company. All “younger women” jokes aside, you cannot tell us Elijah has been living as a monk. His old-world style and panache lends itself to the very romantic — not just kissy-kissy romantic, but also Victorian England romantic. We think he has probably allowed himself periods of time where he let go of his finely woven control and permitted himself to feel. He claims that the lessons of his past have cost him his faith in love itself, and Elijah has clearly learned to detach from emotion. He seems sorry for that.

Elijah: The Dinner Party (EP215)Instead of love, he holds on to what he knows: honor. Elijah is an honorable man, and he respects honorable people. We all saw how he reacted when Elena kept her word and came back to him at the Lockwood mansion. He recognized in her an kindred spirit, and it was kind of a defining moment in the Facial Expressions of Elijah (Bless you, Daniel Gillies!). Unfortunately, Elijah’s honor is also his Achilles heel; every time the magic dagger has gotten him, it was because he trusted someone else’s honor.

Pick a Page
Although there is technically a dagger in his chest at this very moment (#pullthedaggerout, please) we have complete faith that Elijah will be back and better than ever before. He was plenty mad when Elena & Co. “killed” him – both times – what’s going to happen to his usual calm façade when he awakes this time? How will he handle the knowledge that his beloved brother Klaus not only broke his word (not technically, but whatever, just go with it) but also daggered him and boxed him up like antique furniture? It won’t be pretty, folks. When Elijah wakes from this latest bout of dagger death, he’s going to be extra, super, righteously pissed off. The inevitable confrontation is sure to be epic. We can’t wait!

Meanwhile, what will his place be in Mystic Falls? Like we said, Elijah is adaptable. The possibilities are endless, but our brains go to super fun places when we think about his possible run for public office, the Elijah for Mayor campaign has kind of run away with itself. Jokes aside, though, how and why would Elijah stick around with our crew of regular characters? He could go anywhere, do anything – what will keep him in Mystic Falls? (And please, keep him in Mystic Falls! Sorry, but we suffer from random freak outs when we think about him not on our television weekly – can you say rage blackout?) We have some thoughts outside of taking over the mayoral position that might come into play.

Elijah: Rose (EP208)For starters, we’re not completely sure that the werepire curse is done with the doppelganger yet. WHAT?! Crazy, right? But indulge us here: What if because the blood of the Petrova doppelganger bound and released the curse, her blood is also needed to kill a werepire or original werepire like Klaus? Let’s assume that regular underling werepires can be killed using conventional methods (heart snatches for everyone!). Being an Original, we already know that Klaus will need a bigger and badder method than that, and he doesn’t know Elena is alive. What if Elena’s place has evolved from being a pawn in this war to being THE weapon?

We believe that after Elijah met Katerina and she got away, he learned everything he could about doppelgangers and, in particular, how the Petrova doppelgangers could impact a werepire hybrid. He just hasn’t shared this info with anyone yet. Maybe that’s why he got that elixir to keep Katerina alive. He wanted to use her, but the appeal to Klaus was futile, and then Katerina was gone. It makes sense that Elena and Damon will be searching for Elijah to enlist his help in tracking Klaus down to save Stefan, and once he’s resuscitated, we think Elena may be his second chance to pull it off. Keeping her safe would still be his goal, and that’s easier done in Mystic Falls. Also something to keep in mind: Both Elijah and Klaus seemed keen to locate Katerina and keep her under thumb. Why? To slowly torture her is too easy an answer. Maybe even as a vampire she possesses something of value to them. We are definitely not convinced either one of them is through with her.

What else might keep Elijah in town? Well, it’s a pretty good guess that once Elijah is un-daggered his family of Originals will be as well. What if they want to stay in Mystic Falls? We have no idea how long they have been the dead un-dead, but it’s logical to assume that a cultural adjustment will be needed. Remember when the tomb vampires were released from under the church? They were shell-shocked by our technology and way of life. It’s fair to think that some of the Originals have been in stasis for much longer than a 145 years. Elijah may be all regal and dapper, but he knows his way around technology and is comfortable in modern times. Maybe helping them acclimate to this new way of life will be a reason for him to stay. He may even need help from some of the locals, or need some witches to work their juju. And we can’t totally rule out that one of his Original sisters could develop a relationship with, say, Alaric. We’d actually even cheer this on. Boy needs some good lovin’. Since all his lady friends seem to end up as vamps anyway, maybe he should just cut out the middle man and start dating one! But we digress.

Elijah: Klaus (EP219)There is always the possibility of a romance of his own. Yeah, yeah, detached emotion and all that. But romance is one thing that keeps or draws everyone exactly where he or she is meant to be, right? It’s safe to say that he feels a definite pull towards Elena, just as he did to Katerina; a need to know and protect them which was most likely planted over a thousand years ago with the original Petrova. Much like Stefan was drawn to know Elena, Elijah is fascinated by seeing their humanity. Let’s open that up, though: Elijah could conceivably have that fascination for any female he allowed himself to get to know. Just imagining him spending time with and developing feelings for Caroline makes our hearts start beating a mutual samba of awesomeness. Because, really, that would be like… nirvana.

We could prattle like this forever; we really could. There are endless ways in which a character like Elijah could impact this show in a positive way. It would be just a shame to let all of that awesome potential go to waste. We both live in hope that Daniel Gillies has charmed the writing and producing staff as thoroughly as he has the fandom, and based on what we’ve read, we think he has. Season 2 was supposed to be the year of Katherine and Klaus. For us, it was the year of ELIJAH (Well, and Caroline, but that’s another story altogether…). He has charmed us all and now a show without him just seems not nearly as delicious.

So there you go, everybody; An entire essay written by the SBH without once using the word “BAMF.” And here nobody thought we could reign in the worship. HA! #Elijah4Mayor!

This essay was great and full of wonderful Elijah love. Cin and Christina- awesome writing and ideas. Your evaluation of Elijah’s ability to adapt and his personality in general is well-done, and your speculation is interesting.

Thank you so much, it was a labor of love for sure. We adore Elijah  - obviously, so it proved difficult to feel like we were servicing him, keeping our original voices AND keep it honest, real & FUN for readers. We had so much support along the way, and that meant all the difference. And, YES! #pullthedaggerout

Great article! Thoroughly enjoyed reading the entire post from start to end. It was a well-done insightful read on one of the most popular & well-written characters on TVD. Ever since Elijah first appeared on the show, I was enamored by him & became a fan from the get-go. Elijah is spectacular & added to the show greatly.

I am greatly interested to learn more about what he has done in the past, where he has been etc; and that includes learning more about his family. Also, I hope no more daggering comes his way. When Elijah wakes up, he’ll be super pissed. And he will have no time for games. God bless Elijah.

And, Elijah has my vote for mayor!

His being active in Season 3 is a no-brainer (no dagger please).

Someone needs to pull that dagger out very early in S3, I get glassy eyed thinking about Elijah, Damon & Alaric working together, how awesome would that be!  Elijah could teach Damon all kinds of tricks, I think there is mutual respect there.  After all he saved Damon’s life 3 times.

I have been a big fan of the Elijah for Mayor campaign, anything to keep him around.

Keep the Elijah love coming and am at The SBH for the quote of the day, everyday.

I have loved Elijah from his very first episode, and this is a great article. However I do not believe the curse was to prevent Klaus from becoming a werepire. As Elijah said it was to make his werewolf side dormant. I’m guessing his family discovered the secret only after he transformed into a werewolf. His last transformation was much faster than the other first transformations we have seen.

As for the original Petrova, I do not believe the theories that she was the mother or a sister. I go with the theory she was a girl both Klaus and Elijah fell in love with. Elijah told us Klaus wanted to break the curse to sire his own race. After two seasons with Kevin and Julie, we should all be 99.99 percent sure that is not Klaus’ goal. But why would Elijah think that? I am guessing she would have been pregnant with Klaus’ child (I know just like Underworld). I would guess Klaus had to be present at the original ritual where he was cursed, I doubt it would have worked if he had been half way around the world. So going to try and save this girl and his child would make sense. The witches probably also thought that it would be impossible for him to then turn around and kill another girl that looked exactly like her. I would also guess this was within months of the family becoming vampires, and Klaus was in love with this girl while he was still human. The witches would not have known what living for hundreds and thousands of years with this would do to Klaus.

I absolutely LOVE this post. One of the best I’ve read, mostly because it was well written but partly because it’s about ELIJAH! Glad to know that I am not alone with my “move over other characters, THIS is the vamp I want to know more about” feelings. Pardon the comparison, but he’s like how I felt about Spike on Buffy. Even though these two are completely polar as characters, the fan reaction is similar. People couldn’t get enough of Spike so the writers/execs kept bringing back the character. Finally, they had to relent and make him a season regular. The thing is that once Spike became a regular, he was more used for comic appeal/bromance with the main character. Elijah is not that type of character. So it WILL be interesting WHEN (not if) the writers/execs bring him back.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE DANIEL/ELIJAH!!! He is my absolute FAVE character.

  • http://twitter.com/clrumbaugh Christina Rumbaugh

Thank you!! I’m so glad you liked it. :) I was in love with Elijah from that very first episode. He was scary and ominous and, above all, DANGEROUS. But the more we got to know him, the more we got to see these layers, these subtleties to his character. I get what you mean about Spike. He is another example of a show’s “dark horse” — the fan reaction was very, very similar. I cannot wait to see what they do with Elijah in Season 3. I love me some Ripper Stefan, but I’m most excited to see what they do with Elijah and the Originals.

(sidenote: Maybe Elijah and his siblings can start a band. And that’ll be their name. TOTALLY works.)

    This was a  nice read…..
About the original Petrova….Elijah never believed to see the original Petrova when he woke up in the SBH. He believed to see Katarina, so does that mean that the original Petrova had not the same age as Katherine and Elena???
We have never seen a physical or sexual relationship between KatKlaus or Kalijah. They have been quite vague about it.
And I can’t see a witch using an innocent person like a wife to curse Klaus. I think there are several reasons which lead me to think it could be the mother….but who knows. Wasn’t there 8 coffins in ther warehouse including Elijah’s….so the 7 sibilings + the father….maybe`?

  • http://twitter.com/Dayna_Barter Dayna Barter

I agree that they’ve been deliberately vague about the relationship to the original Petrova, so I think they’ve left it open for themselves to go either way.

I disagree, however, about whom Elijah thought he was seeing when he awoke disoriented.  Katerina was his first guess, but when he realized it wasn’t her, I think it was the first one he was flashing back to, hence the wrenching “Oh my God.”  He had already seen Katherine in the present, and he wouldn’t have reacted like that to either her or Elena.

As far as the number of coffins, I tried going frame by frame and could never get a good enough view to see how many were there. Anyone else have any luck?

  • http://www.my-dailyplanet.net/ Ari

Well, I personally more interesting in Elijah than Klauss. Elijah sounds more epic than his brother. But, who knows after the season 3, I change my mind

  • Brina

    Really great job guys!!

Loved your idea of Elena being the weapon to kill Klaus!

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! You make some very good points. That was one of our goals with this article – to open up peoples minds to speculation.

Yes, since Klaus was born with the werewolf gene once he became a vampire he already WAS a ‘werepire’. But before he ever transitioned the curse/spell was performed to keep it dormant. It is my theory that the family of Originals were created when Daddy Original found out that Klaus was not his own. He went to extract revenge and was faced with werewolves. I think it was then that he employed the witches and his family became the first vampires – to create a balance (although a more powerful species) to the werewolves. Daddy Original then took his new found power and destroyed them and before Klaus was allowed to transition. In “The Sun Also Rises” he seemed to be amazed at the transition process, and again in “As I Lay Dying” he marveled at being able to change at will. If he had ever transitioned I’m not sure that would have been his reaction.

I definitely think he wants to ‘sire’ his own race. However that works. They have come out and said it, why wouldn’t it be the goal? He wants to be and create the most powerful race of beings on the planet. Being the most feared Original vampire isn’t even enough for him.

I’m not convinced Klaus has ever truly loved anyone. IMO he’s Voldemort. He wants total control and lays waste to anyone in his path. But I’m definitely biased. I enjoy Klaus as a villain, but I believe he could be limited by his ‘all evil-ness’. I prefer Elijah because I don’t think he suffers from that affliction at all. He has and will continue to adapt and evolve. Honestly, although I had these speculations in the article, I have no idea where they will go with the original Petrova story. I’m looking forward to the ride, because any humanizing of Klaus would be welcomed at this point and any romance of Elijah enjoyed.

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net Vee

But Klaus’s true lineage wasn’t discovered until AFTER the family was turned into vampires – Elijah tells Elena this in “Klaus.”

  • Drich61

Yes, that is why I think Klaus had already transitioned into a werewolf before the curse was placed on him. That was how the family discovered the secret.

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

That’s right! See what happens when I just word vomit speculation? LOL Either way, I don’t think he ever transitioned. If he had, then his lineage would have been discovered sooner. But maybe that was the case. Perhaps his ‘difference’ is what propelled the Original’s creation.

    Such a tangled web.

  • http://twitter.com/mylobster27 Becca Leigh

The Originals story lines is one of the most exciting things to happen in the series. There are so many ways it could go, it makes my brain hurt! That’s one of the great things about this show, is the seemingly endless possibilities.
I hope for some romantic action for Elijah either in present or flashbacks. That Original Petrova is tickling my curious bone.
No matter which way the story goes, I know one thing for sure…they will not bore me.

  • Candygirl9890

I TOTALLY AGREE!!! Ever since the “Klaus” episode, the idea of the original Petrova woman being Klaus and Elijah’s mother has been racing through my mind. Or at the very least, a blood relative.

Hint: Jonas used Elijah’s blood during his linking spell to find Elena in “The Sacrifice.”

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

Thank you all so much for the reading. Seeing discussion on possible theories makes my heart sing.

I honestly could go either way with the original Petrova. We embellished on the ‘lover’ angle because it would be a parallel with the Salvatores, and anytime I can think about Elijah being all tragic romantic hero… *swoon* BUT I very much think it could be a blood relative, of the ‘Original’ family or of Klaus’ werewolf bloodline. And I’m not sure it would be the mother. It could have even been a sister. Petrova could very well have been the Original’s surname. There are so many ways it could pan out.

I’m not 100% on the number of coffins either. If it were 8 though, we don’t know if all of them are full.

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

I thought Jonah used Elijah’s blood so that Elijah could ‘see’ Elena. He had gathered Elena’s hair. And Jonah couldn’t ‘see’ her. Only Elijah.

But I totally agree with you, the original Petrova being a blood relative is a strong possibility.

  • TriniJax

Thank you for saying EXACTLY what has been going through my mind the past few weeks. I have been wondering why Elijah stayed with Klaus for so long. I’m sure it’s a storyline that will be explored in Season 3. And I want to know HOW Klaus killed his family. I foresee lots of juicy Original plots in Season 3!

I soooo totally want Elijah to team up with one of his bad ass sisters and start kickin’ some serious ass! I wonder who would qualify as the female version of Elijah? Damn, a female Elijah counterpart? A terrifying, but oh so sexy thought! I feel a serious girl crush coming on right now…*Lowers head in fangirl shame*

  • Drich61

I do not think he transitioned as a human. I think he triggered the werewolf curse when he killed someone once he was a vampire.

  • Drich61

The reasons I do not think she was a blood relative is because of what Elijah said in ‘Klaus’. “You remind me of someone” of course could be either. When talking to Katherine he said “I do not believe in love”, a relative would not make him say this, he is talking about a lost love. In his conversation with Klaus, Klaus said “love is a vampires greatest weakness and we are not weak Elijah. We do not feel and we do not care.” Elijah said “we did once”, then Klaus “too many lifetimes ago to matter.” Again they are not talking about a relative here.

  • http://twitter.com/clrumbaugh Christina Rumbaugh

I kind of feel like the female version of Elijah could possibly even more terrifying than he is. Everything done for a reason, but otherwise ruthless. No one will ever replace Elijah in my heart, but damn, that’s just too a thought good to discard. Yes, please!

  • Lauren

Awesome essay. I love Elijah. I really hope they do bring him back (I know they will. They have to!). As for the original girl, I highly doubt that she is the originals’ mother. Elijah falling in love with a chick that looked just like his mom? Gross. The jury’s still out about whether or not the original girl is related to the originals’, though I doubt that too. I really believe that the original Petrova was the love of Elijah’s life, and the circumstances of the sacrifice left him, and possibly Klaus, really hurt. I hope we all get to meet her one day. Can’t wait for Season 3!

Ah, I didn’t thought about the parallel with the love triangle, but wouldn’t it be wired. I think they have enough love triangles, squarres, polygons…. I want to see more from a character…..

I agree it could be a sister. Elijah said that they were the first family, but did that mean they were all turned or just the sibilings and not the parents?

btw I read that with the 8 coffins somewhere, but when I tried to count it was impossible to see how many…

I can’t start to describe how much I LOVE this essay! I enjoy it right from the beginning and just couldn’t stop (sorry, maths paper you’ll just have to wait)! It’s mind-blowing to see you handing out so many new ideas and thoughts and that just provokes, I dare to say, everyone’s imagination. It’s just an absolutely brilliant, humorous, well-written read!
Thank you so much for this amazing article!

First just let me say that Elijah is the most EPIC character
to exist in The Vampire Diaries period. When he was introduced my first
impression was “Damn he is one powerful vampire, let’s not cross him, ever.”
Then when the Salvatore brothers got very lucky and managed to stake him, I
already had a feeling that it wouldn’t be the end. Once I saw him pull out the
stake and get up and walk away in the ending cut scenes, I was eagerly
    anticipating his next appearance.

Elijah’s character developed more and more from cold, scary
Original to a powerful but honorable person who’s shrouded in a lot of mystery. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s
going on in that head of his, but the glimpses we got in later episodes, namely
‘Klaus’, were fascinating. I also agree that there definitely seemed to be something
going on between Elijah, Klaus, and the original Petrova doppelganger.

Personally, I’m leaning more toward the possibility that
Elijah and maybe Klaus had non-platonic feelings toward the original Petrova,
that she was their lover or wife not a family member. The lines pointed out
from ‘Klaus’ about love do seem to support the theory that there may have been
something going on between the three of them. There had to have been some major
tragedy involved in this story, and I believe that it may just explain a lot of
Elijah’s more detached tendencies and Klaus’ more (shall we say) homicidal and
manic ones. After all we see how well Katerina affected both Stephen and Damon
and for over a century too.

I think that Klaus awakened his werewolf side after becoming
a vampire, perhaps because of the same reason a normal werewolf does, by
killing someone. Since they’re Originals I doubt the process of becoming a
vampire is the same as the normal method, however what if Klaus’ first kill as
a vampire awakened his previously dormant werewolf shifting ability. We also
know that even before fully become a werewolf there are signs such as a short
and volatile temper and above average strength. Not to mention, as shown when
the anti-vampire device was activated before Founder’s Day in Season one,
certain circumstances cause a werewolf’s eyes to turn yellow even before their
first transformation. Maybe some sign tipped off the family, and after becoming
vampires Klaus’ “adoptive” father took the opportunity to slaughter Klaus’ blood
father thus triggering the werewolf/vampire feud. Sometime before his first
transformation Klaus’ werewolf side was probably sealed because he seemed too
excited and fascinated after breaking the curse for it to not be his first time.

The other story that I’m eager to learn about is how Klaus
managed to dagger the other Originals. Despite the fact that Klaus is extremely
powerful even with his werewolf side forced into dormancy and the fact that the
Originals were not yet 1000+ year old vampire super powers I don’t think even
Klaus could manage to take on what  5
other Originals or 7 if the parents are both included?

This brings me to my absolute fantasy dream for Season 3.
First part should be PULL THE DAGGER OUT OF ELIJAH ASAP. Maybe Elena or someone
will realize that with a Godlike werepire hybrid on the loose (who also has
Stephen in his grasp) they’ll need someone who stands closer to him in power,
namely the other Originals. If the other Originals are awakened this gives huge
flashback opportunities for the exploration of their massive back-story. Not to
mention that the addition of so many new characters brings in huge drama
opportunities as well. It also gives a reason for them to stay in Mystic Falls.
For one thing, after being in stasis for who knows how long none of them would
be prepared to go and off Klaus immediately plus they don’t know where he is
anyway. Elijah being the honorable person he is would probably feel inclined to
stick around since he did betray them at the sacrifice and they helped get his
family back. And where Elijah is they would probably need to be. Since there’s
going to be all kinds of fun involved with trying to get a family of Originals assimilated
to modern times. Since the Originals are from the old world perhaps they too
will have a similar honor code and feel inclined to at least linger a little
near those who pulled their daggers out.

Wow that was a lot to say. Anyway my number on goal for
season 3 is still pull the dagger out of Elijah. Please. I will be seriously
depressed if Elijah doesn’t come back into the show as, at the very least, a
    somewhat regular character.

    Love the essay. Love Elijah.
Not so sure about a Caroline-Elijah thing though, it kind of creeps me out for some reason. Maybe it’s cos they’re so so different?
Would love to see him paired with Kat… or a surprise Elena steal?? :0)

I am now convinced that Elijah definitely knew and had some kind of feelings for the first Petrova doppelganger. After watching the “Klaus” episode for probably the fifth or so time I realized something. After Elena pulls the dagger out and Elijah is staring at her he says “Oh my god” and it goes to flashback. However, I noticed that in the flashback before saying, “Forgive me, you remind me of someone.” to Katerina it looks like he’s mouthing an “Oh my god.” In present time the words were actually voiced but in the past he seemed to have been able to reign them in. Therefore, I have concluded that Katerina and as a result Elena remind him of someone else, the first Petrova I bet.

I love Elijah, he is my favorite, I think I would be depressed if he didn’t come back in season 3 too.
