Think your right on this one!!!

Some people just don’t relate to or understand Damon’s character and what the writer’s are doing with him. They want to see him fail with helping Elena because they don’t want him to be successful in any way. They’re making Elena’s humanity storyline too much about which brother is better, as opposed to what it should be about – Elena and her character growth, as well as the overall plot of the show. So, they hope for Damon’s failure so that when Elena “wakes up”, she’ll realize her terrible mistake and see him for the monster he truly is.

The only problem with that is since S1, the story has progressed, background info has been revealed and the characters have all evolved. It’s become more and more evident that Damon is actually a good guy, that he can love selflessly, that he’s pretty darn heroic and that he’ll do anything in his power to protect the people he’s come to care about. He’s not perfect – he’s a vampire and he’s the last one to deny it – but he’s not any more of a monster than Stefan is and he never was. Elena already knows that. She’s seen him at his worst and she’s seen him at his best so she won’t be “waking up” to anything she didn’t already know. It’s also been made crystal clear that Elena loves Damon, regardless. She was in love with him before she turned and she loves him now. The sire bond didn’t cause it and when she decides to switch her emotions back on or if she becomes human again, she’s not going to stop loving him.

I also think a lot of people want a specific character to be “The One” to get Elena to switch on her humanity. I just don’t think it’ll work that way. Caroline and Stefan utterly failed in their methods this past week, got totally manipulated and Caroline almost got killed for her efforts. But they were right in the things they were saying to her and she did hear them, even if she doesn’t want to acknowledge it at the moment.

She was honest with Damon about what she wants because she trusts him and she knows he’s more about letting her work things out rather than trying to force her to comply but he won’t get through the NYC trip unscathed, either. It won’t be a total success or a complete failure. Even if things don’t go smoothly, whatever does happen will end up helping in the long run.

Same with interactions she’ll have with Rebekah, Matt and Bonnie, even Elijah and Katherine. All of it will have an impact. I think it’ll take the whole group to reach her.
