Vampire Diaries TV SeriesIt’s been a good, long while since we asked the question: what do you think about the cast? Since then, the Vampire Diaries pilot has been filmed, edited, and screened to the people at the CW network, and now we’re waiting for the 21st of May to see if the show gets picked up.

Many responses to the question about the cast were honest reactions from the heart. We know that a lot of people were upset at the casting, and you definitely let us know about it. Back then, the changes were quite a shock for fans of the books, and many of the opinions expressed reflected that initial outrage. Now that some time has passed, and you’ve been able to digest the news and pictures trickling in from the set, have those initial thoughts changed any in the past month and a half? Do you still feel the same way as you did when you first heard the news? If you’ve got something new to add, please share it with the rest of us in the comments.

While we’re on the subject of the TV series, Kevin Williamson tweeted something interesting this morning:

Going to Georgia to see if it can pass for Vancouver which passed for Virginia.

We can’t think of anything else that Williamson is working on that is set in Virginia and has been filmed in Vancouver. Whether or not it’s in relation to The Vampire Diaries, who can say? But the possibilities are certainly intriguing.

I’m still reserving my judgement on the entire series. So far the only thing that has me even remotely interested is Somerhalder, so at this point in time the portrayal of Damon is the only thing that’s going to hook me.

Though I’m going to give Williamson some cred – I had commented previously that the feel of TVD was very similar to the feel of Dawson’s Creek in a warped way. Now, I really disliked this show, but it was like crack: I couldn’t stop watching. That’s some pretty powerful stuff that might bleed over into TVD.

If that tweet is in relation to The Vampire Diaries, it’s an intriguing nugget for a few reasons:

    1) Georgia has a solid TV and film community and an incredibly generous state tax credit for productions filming there, providing the financial incentive that often drives productions up to Vancouver, aka Hollywood North.

    2) Filming in the States means American jobs for an American production. (Not to be all patriotic about it, but I’m sure everyone has noticed that the economy is kinda sucking and jobs are hard to come by?)

    3) Filming the series in the South would lend it an atmospheric credibility you just can’t recreate anywhere else. (Supernatural, The X-Files, and other Vancouver-based shows have tried and it never rang true – so says this born n’ bred Southerner.)

    4) Most importantly, The Vampire Diaries production could completely separate itself from the New Moon and Eclipse filming mania that is currently swallowing Vancouver whole. And the proof is in the pudding on this last point – news during the Vampire Diaries pilot filming came almost exclusively from Siega, Plec, and Williamson – good sources for it to come from, no doubt – in bite-size nuggets. Other than some pap shots of Ian Somerhalder, event shots of Nina Dobrev and Kayla Ewell, and a few blog posts from extras, press coverage was pretty much zilch. Sure, it’s a pilot and there are literally hundreds of productions filming, but two weeks and the only “news” is Somerhalder out on the town with Ashley Greene? C’mon.

IF the series is picked up (IF, IF, IF), I’d really respect a move to keep production in the States. And in the South, no less.

I am still disappointed that they dont have the look of the characters. However, without having actually seen it we can not tell if they have the “feel” of the characters. And that is actually much more important than the looks of the people. So, as others have said. I am reserving my judgment until I have seen it. :)

Even though there are changes with Legend Of The Seeker I’ve found myself really enjoying the show and I was a fan of the books first. I think I’m just used to the idea of things from the book getting changed when it moves to the small screen so I’m still keeping an open mind about it and I really loved Dawson’s Creek so I’m glad Kevin’s doing the show. There’s also the chance that things could get changed if they do get the green light since that could happen.

I still wish they’d go all the way and change the name of the series so we could all enjoy it as something different, because it really is WAY too different to be called The Vampire Diaries.

There are too many arbitrary changes for no discernible reason, and too many deviations from the source materials. Before the show came out, I said “As long as everyone looks about right, and the iconic scenes are there, I’ll probably love it.”

The characters are all different. They all look wrong and they’re almost all WRITTEN wrong, too. The iconic scenes are gone, because the story does not for ONE SECOND stick to the books. This is not Vampire Diaries and no one’s going to convince me that it is. It’s not being a purist to feel upset and disrespected when not a single character looks like their book self and not a single plot point stays the same; literally the ONLY scene that’s taken from the books is Stefan mind whammying the secretary. Woooow.

The True Blood ripoffs also cheapen an otherwise relatively original (for its time) story, and I feel pretty disgusted by those. A sassy black best friend! A druggie brother in trouble with the law and blamed for the murders! A vampire returning to his old hometown to reassimilate! All of this is from True Blood, NOT Vampire Diaries. Twilight-izing Elena is also irksome, as well as Twilight-izing her and Stefan’s relationship. Way to cheapen the integrity of the story by making it look like one big plagiarism-fest, guys. Great job.

The only way I’ll be watching this show is if they change the name or do a LOT of rewriting and recasting before the series goes to shoot. One or the other. I’m not a purist – not everything needs to be the same, and I don’t MIND changes here and there (like, I don’t really care that Tyler’s not a ginger kid or that Vickie looks wrong, and additional scenes and minor plot changes and new subplots are fine by me too). But when every single iconic scene is gone, every single character relationship is completely different (in some cases for the worse), and none of the characters look right (Hell, Stefan doesn’t even look particularly ATTRACTIVE, so there goes any chance of pure eye candy), well… they might as well crap all over my copies of the books for all the respect they’re showing them.

So that’s my vote. Either they change the name of the series to reflect the fact that it has absolutely nothing in common with the books – in which case I’ll judge it on its own, though the writing in the script made me cringe – or they do some serious rearranging of both cast and script. Nothing else will convince me to even bother tuning in out of morbid curiosity.

But keep Marcos Siega. He’s cool.

I’m still stuck on how old some of the actors are. I know it’s pretty normal for older actors to play teenagers, but there’s a limit :/

I have to agree with Incanto on this one. The first time I heard about the Vampire Diaries being a series, it was on tv guide.com. I was thrilled that one of my favorite childhood book series would become a television show. That was before.

When I saw the cast, I was hesitant. When I saw who the director was, I got annoyed. (I hated Dawson’s Creek). Then when I read the script, I was pissed.

We have an Elena who should be Meredith. A Caroline that should be Elena. A Stefan that’s not devastatingly handsome. I can’t even go into the horror of changing Bonnie’s appearance.

Why change the town, the names, the charaters’ description for crying out loud? Hell, Alfred Gough and Miles Miller changed the mythology of Superman by making Clark Kent and Lex Luther best buds in Smallville. But literally, that was it. They didn’t change the town name, the character’s name, and only minor changes to the characters’ physical descriptions.

I mean, damn. It would be like Harry Potter without the ‘lightening scar’. No wonder Lisa says she won’t watch.

Well Elena is suppose to look like an angel with blonde hair and fair skin the girl they cast looks nothing like the description of Elena she is tan with dark hair. It just doesn’t make sense at all for the story. In most of the book her aura is what captures Stefan and Damon and her golden hair and angel like features so they pretty much casted the opposite of that description here. I really think they need a cast adjustment. I love who they cast for Damon and Stefan that was pretty dead on to me of their descriptions. And Bonnie is a red head. I mean come on… they are so far off with who they cast for her as well. Some one should be fired……

I was so excited when i heard that they were making this book into a tv series. But can you say disappointment? How are you not going to follow the book? Why do you think Twlight was such a hit? Because they followed the book!!! I mean first off Elena is blond, second your Damon would fit better as Stefan. Where is Meridith? Also Elena has a sister not a brother. You follow your fans, thats what gets your ratings and support.. READ THE BOOKS, THATS WHAT MAKES THIS STORY SO SPECIAL.

The first thing I already dislike about the TV version of the Vampire Diaries is like everyone has stated so far the characters don’t portray any resemblance to the characters in the books. Elena is not a brunette and her eyes are blue and so on with the other characters. From the previews of the pilot it just doesn’t seem true to the books and that sucks. I have been a loyal Vampire Diaries reader since the 90′s when it came out on the shelves of bookstores. I was highly anticipating the release of the show on the CW but not if it is going to be so drastically different. Even the acting seems kind of poorly done from the previews I’ve seen. I will watch the first few episodes just to give it a chance. I think they need to seriously get a better writer for the scripts and some decent actors from what I have seen so far. I hope this show is not going to let me down. It would truly be sad to see it go off air after 1-3 seasons due to a poor start.
