Thanks in large part to the lovely Sucker for Vampires – who’s been translating a lot of our major news since early April (Olá!) – we receive a lot of hits from Brazil, so we’re pleased to point out that DARKSIDEsubs has added Portuguese subtitles to The Vampire Diaries three-scene teaser trailer and promo trailer. (SfV will have to let us know if the subtitles are any good, but here’s hoping!)

And it looks like The Vampire Diaries is plowing headfirst into pre-production with a (new?) production designer and writing officially begins (glance at clock) today. Really great to hear Marcos Siega will still be involved in the project.

Here’s the big one – we finally know for certain what the deal is with Fell’s Church vs. Mystic Falls, straight from Julie Plec:

Fell’s Church not clearable, like some of the characters’ names. Everything needs to be legally cleared.

Translation: It wasn’t an arbitrary change. They can’t use Fell’s Church.

So that answers that. At least we have Salvatore.

   Like some of the characers’ names? The exception of the big 3, they’ve changed the other characters’ last name. What; they couldn’t clear Honeycutt, Forbes, Smallwood…?

   To be honest, we’re not even sure about the other characters’ surnames right now anyway, so we don’t know which will end up changed and which will have been cleared. Hopefully we’ll be able to find that out at some point soon.

   Looking it up on yahoo maps, I don’t see a real Fell’s Church. The only thing I do see is FALL’S Church. Anywho, doesn’t matter I guess. I’m just glad that that we got Salvatore back.

   I’m not going to claim a thorough knowledge of intellectual property law, but my guess is that since Alloy/WB/The CW are essentially building a brand with the TV series, they’re being extra-extra-careful on skirting any potential hiccups with any registered trademarks that might be floating out there (and that does include names). And that can change with moving from one medium to another. But I don’t think it’s as simple as just that – there are a lot of other aspects to consider as far as advertising, product licensing, etc.

   It’s 8 in the morning and I just woke up, so if the above makes any sense at all (even if it’s completely off-base), I’m gonna chalk that up to a success for today.

   Couldn’t they have come up with something a little less….fluffy than Mystic Falls? That souds so…1990’s new age. (And, as someone who worked in a store called Mystic Dream, yeeeeah.)

   Oh, and on the bright side – Mystic Falls could still be plausibly attached to the town’s founding as we know it from the books. Any name could, but now that I’m getting over the initial “Mrr?” of it, there *does* seem to be a particular line of thought behind the name.

    Well, we’re talking about at least three huge media conglomerates who probably each have an entire complex for their legal teams – if they say it can’t be cleared, I imagine they have a valid reason for saying so. (Have I mentioned I co-run a website that lets me talk about how much I love when two fictional vampire brothers hit things or eat oranges?) But the short answer: it’s all about not getting sued. Yes.

    And ha! Well, I hope that means…”intelligently”?
