Vampire Diaries TV SeriesWhether you’ve been following The Vampire Diaries pilot development since February (um, like us), or you’ve just discovered there will be a TV series (loosely) based on L.J. Smith’s 1991 book series (hello!), you may be wondering what happens next as the show shifts from a pilot to a full-blown TV series.

In case the magical world of pilots, production, and pickups is new to you (we know we’ve learned a lot in the past three months), you can see a brief-ish overview of what’s been going on the TV Series page of the Vampire Diaries Wiki. This includes a rough timeline of when the cast was announced, the start and finish of filming, etc. (The bulk of important info can of course be found in the TV Series section of the main site.)

Basically the pilot is a sample presented to the network that proposes how a possible TV series will look and feel. If the network likes what they see and thinks the concept shows promise, they’ll pick it up. That’s what we’ve just seen with The Vampire Diaries. The network watched the pilot, they huddled in the corner to discuss, and today they ordered it to series.

The CW Network will present its 2009-2010 schedule at New York City’s Madison Square Garden Theatre this Thursday at 11 a.m. EST. This is when we find out on what night and at what time The Vampire Diaries will air come Fall 2009. There will be an official press release of the network’s schedule and possibly some promotional images/footage of the new shows. The advertisers (people with the cashy money) will be used as a gauge for what shows have the most buzz/promise surounding them, and of course the entertainment columnists will be there in full force to throw their two cents in.

After the upfront, the network will start to fine tune the new shows and get ‘em into full-blown series shape. Lots of things can happen. They might run the actual pilot as the first episode of the series and build from there (common), or they might retool the pilot for airing, or they might not use the pilot at all and begin with a fresh first episode (Firefly fans will be familiar with this). Elements of the plot may be dropped or added, characters may be recast, they could even change the title (though we think this is highly unlikely) – basically, the pilot could or could not be the final product.

It will be interesting to see what changes – if any – will be made before the show hits our TV screens. And of course we expect to see plenty of Vampire Diaries promotion heading into Fall. All we know is that we’re in for a potentially exciting summer! If you haven’t read the books or need a re-read, there’s no better time than now.

(Also, guys? We love you, we really do – but the next person to ask us for the pilot is getting linked to something they will never be able to unsee. Trust us, we can find something to haunt you for the rest of your days on this earth. Like the Moonlight pilot…BEFORE they recast everyone but Alex O’Loughlin. Oh, yes. We will go there.)
