We decided it would be fun to ask some of our favorite Vampire Diaries recappers to share their top three moments of Season 3 so far – oh, and we were right! It is fun.

We’re nearing the end of our Top 3 Moments series, but that’s good news because it means the return of new episodes is just around the corner! To help get us over the final hump, Lucia of Heroine TV has a lot of fun enthusing over the under-appreciated awesome of Matt, Caroline, and Alaric. (And she’s on to you, Carol Lockwood!) You can check out her Vampire Diaries recaps at Heroine TV.

And don’t forget to vote in the Mid-Season Finale Poll: Your 3 Favorite Episodes of Season 3 (So Far)?

What are my three favorite moments of The Vampire Diaries this season? I invite you on a quick journey through my decision making process. It went something like this: “Um, does the continued existence of Caroline, Katherine, and Alaaaaaric count? BOOM! Done. Buuuut I bet they’re looking for something more specific … as in actual moments. Hair! All the hair! (No, not Damon’s hair. Down with mullets!) More hair! Pink shirt! Hmmm … I suspect that possibly none of these things actually count as moments. Keep trying, Lucia. Everything Caroline ever does EVER! Too vague? But that list would be too long. Caroline Forbes Fan Club 4eva! How about Alaric translating stuff? Alaric joining the Council! Alaric training Elena! Katherine in a flapper dress! With a cute bob! Wolfsbane grenades! KA-BOOM. Ha, this was all Katherine’s plan. Of course it was! Alphabet Plan, Part Deux. Good, good. I’m getting somewhere. But maybe I should branch out? Who else is on this show? Rebekah! Rebekah’s tears! Oh, and Matt! Killing himself! Then giving up his sister! This show. Sigh. And Pearl and Anna’s hug! All the tears. Klaus just wants a friend! Sassy Stefan! A beer for every bromance! How can I possibly choose? I give up.” You can see why this might be a problem. I just have a lot of favorites, okay. Is that so wrong?

After a lot of careful thought, however, I have done the impossible and narrowed it down. And I only sort of cheated. Just a tiny bit. Okay, just a medium-sized bit. Okay, a lot. That entire first paragraph was cheating. You figured it out. Fine! But still, I did pick three in the end, so I think there should at least be a statue erected in my honor in the Mystic Falls Town Square. Or perhaps on a small muddy planet where people might sing songs in my honor? Whatever you prefer, people. I’m not picky. So, without further ado, here is my list of favorite moments (that are second best to Katherine’s hair, obviously):

Top 3 Moments of Vampire Diaries Season 3 (So Far): Lucia of Heroine TV

Matt’s Sacrifice (EP305 – The Reckoning)

If you are practically an orphan, and you kill yourself in order to see your dead sister again, and also in order to save people’s lives from a scary Hybrid, and then get brought back to life due to a witch’s lifeguard training …. well, then you really deserve a place on my list. I hope that no one will be offended that I’m somehow implying (okay, more than implying) that a television character killing himself is one of my favorite things. I mean … that looks really bad in black and white. Let me explain.

First, I will set the scene. In The Reckoning, Klaus is on the Mystic Falls High campus, and he has a clock running on Tyler and Elena’s lives. Things are bad. When Matt finds out that his ex-girlfriend and his estranged best friend are in trouble, he does not hesitate to help. He doesn’t have any supernatural powers, and his job skills include serving food to vamps, werewolves, and teenagers who don’t tip well … and yet! And yet he figures out an actual plan to help. With Jeremy MIA, Matt realizes that it’s up to him to communicate with the Other Side. He explains to Bonnie, “Jeremy can see ghosts because you brought him back from the dead. I need you to do that for me.” Bonnie tries to tell him that he’s crazy, but Matt insists that she doesn’t even need magic for this one. She just needs to be a good lifeguard. And with that, he chains some weights to his body and jumps into the pool, determined to drown.

Now, I don’t know if this is a result of what this show has done to me, but I actually thought that Matt’s plan was a pretty solid one when I watched this episode–at least as far as plans go in the Mystic Falls universe. I mean, he did notify a certified lifeguard first. It’s not like he was being reckless! So … Matt drowns. And it was beautiful, dramatic, sad, and extremely stressful. It felt more like an eternity than a moment, as we were waiting for Bonnie to jump in and save him. But she did. And he lived. And Matt got to see Vicki again, and get the message that was necessary to save Tyler’s life.

What I loved about this moment of Matt’s sacrifice was the emotional depth and complexity. This was certainly not the suicide attempt of a depressed person (if it were, I probably wouldn’t have put it on a “favorite” list due to all the blinding tears), but there was an element of real tragedy in the desperation that led to Matt’s action, and the joy at finally connecting with his dead sister on the Other Side. Such a bittersweet reunion. On the other hand, this had the trappings of a real heroic act—Matt sacrificing himself to save another. So, it just worked on these multiple levels of pathetic, tragic, selfless, and brave. And it made me cry. I’m not made of stone. Even more tragical? This would not be the last horrific sacrifice that Matt would have to make in order to save a life, as in a future episode he was forced to say goodbye to Vicki forever. And Matt does not exactly have family members to spare. Way to suffer for the greater good, Matt Donovan.

Caroline To The rescue! (EP304 – Disturbing Behavior)

It is no secret that Caroline Forbes is the sun, the moon, and the stars for me. So, picking a favorite moment from her this season was hard. As the sole member of the Mystic Falls Honesty Police, she has my eternal devotion. Also, our Caroline’s control freak ways make her the best vampire ever. She should give lessons in Vampire 101: How Not to Suck, Literally and Figuratively. But possibly the biggest “Hell yeah!” moment this season was when she saved her father and beat up Damon. Go, Caroline! Go go go!

I’m no fan of Bill Forbes. I mean, I wouldn’t exactly mind seeing him torn apart by wolves. But that would make Caroline sad, and no one wants that. Besides, Damon can’t just go killing Caroline’s dad without her permission. How rude! When Damon seemed poised to kill Papa Forbes, Caroline sped in to rescue him, even though her parental unit very recently TORTURED her in a basement. That’s just the kind of daughter that Caroline is. He is her father after all. If only she were born to parents who better appreciated her perfection. Sigh. Anyway, when she then offered her injured dad her vamp blood to heal him, he refused. But Caroline further proved her awesomeness by rolling her eyes and asserting, “Grow up!” She is the most mature person on this show, after all (which is possibly a scary thought).

Of course, Damon was on a self-destructive kick that week, so he was spoiling for a fight and he refused to back down when Caroline told him to leave. He asked, “Or what?” and then Caroline answered his question very clearly by punching him. That’s what you get for asking a stupid question, Damon. Go, Caroline! But then, Damon threw her back and seemed to get the best of her. “I’m stronger than you, little girl,” he crowed. Caroline: “Well, I’m angrier!” And with that, she awesomely head butted him and sped off with her dad. Caroline head butting Damon for the win! Now don’t you think that the gal who can get the better of Damon in a scuffle deserves to be invited to fights? And be part of all the doomed-to-fail plans? Plus, if there’s one thing Caroline Forbes knows how to do, it’s plan things. Hint, hint.

Alaric Joining The Council (EP304 – Disturbing Behavior)

Oh, Alaaaaric. Our “boy scout slash vampire slayer slash whiskey drinking all around lost cause” has been having quite the season. After floundering in a drunken stupor all summer, he finally had to face reality. He got his ring back, moved into the Gilbert home in a non-couch capacity, and started telling Damon to “take a beat.” That’s right, Alaric started taking a closer look at his best vamp pal’s actions, and more importantly, finally got angry. Yeah, it took Damon killing him (AGAIN) to make Mr. Saltzman get good and mad, but he did it. Happily, he decided to something constructive with his anger. For most people, getting temporarily murdered by one’s bestie (for the second time) might inspire revenge, but for Alaric, it was just the reality check that he needed, leading to the best scene ever.

What did our scruffy alcoholic history teacher do after his latest resurrection? He plopped himself down on Carol Lockwood’s couch and proceeded to tell her and Sheriff Forbes HOW THINGS ARE. Excuse me. I just need to compose myself for a minute. Breathe iiiiiiiiin, breathe ouuuuuut. Okay, okay. So, Alaric-in-Charge wants a seat on the Council, and then Carol is all like, “That’s not the way it works, Mr. Saltzman.” And I’m all like, “Put down your tea cup, Carol, and realize that the way it works is NOT working. Down with the Founders! Up with the people! And Carol, we know what it is really in that tea cup. You are fooling no one.” But then Alaric says it better, schooling Liz and Carol: “Oh, really? Then tell me how it does. The Council’s job is to protect the families of this town. Now, your daughter’s a vampire and your son’s a werewolf. So who’s looking out for the actual people? Some of them may be family or friends, but they are still supernatural. They don’t follow our rules or our laws. They look after themselves. And that’s what we need to do. I’ll see you at the next meeting.” Yeah, he did say, “I’ll see you at the next meeting,” and then just casually stroll out of the room. BAM! Yes, that really happened.

Now, perhaps the significance of this scene is somewhat undercut by the fact that we have yet to see any follow-through on this. When was the next meeting? Were there snacks? Did Alaric hand out Wolfsbane grenades as an icebreaker? Or perhaps a retractable-stake gift bag? But this moment is still a sign of good things to come. For one thing, someone finally cared about the cannon fodder on this show. People are people too! Also, it heralded a new age in which Alaric is serving as Elena’s vampire slaying coach, and giving delightful pep talks about how strong a person she is. You guys, our scruffy alcoholic history teacher is threatening to actually become a good pseudo-father figure. Plus, he’s kind of a feminist. I know, right?! I quote: “I think you can do pretty much anything.” Oh, Alaaaaaric. It’s nice to have a “boy scout slash vampire slayer slash whiskey drinking all around lost cause” in Team Human’s corner.

I’m so happy that Matt made the top 3. No one ever gives Matt any credit. I love Matt <3

Also, very happy/relieved that Matt didn't die.

  • Delena <#

ugh no offence bt no delena or stelena or even klaus

  • dman

Great job as usual, Lucia. I’m a big fan of yours as well as your blog. Thank you for the tremendous job you do, especially recapping the Vampire Diaries. I love that your recaps are long and detail-oriented and funny.

Now with that ah-that’s-sweet moment out of the way(lol), I have to disagree with you about Caroline(how dare I, lol). I know how much you love Caroline and how awesome she is, I love her too, but I feel that the fight with her and Damon was a little too unrealistic and overstated. Caroline is great, but as a younger vampire, she should not have been able to beat Damon, a much older vampire. I think the writers were playing up Caroline’s abilities a little too much and they broke their own vampire rules to do it. It was a little too much to take.

With that said, everyone should check out Lucia’s website. Not only does she do a fantastic job recapping the Vampire Diaries, she also recaps other TV shows as well. I don’t give out praise lightly so believe me when I say this, she’s tremendous.

I understand your point but they get endless love and devotion from the fandom everyday as well as the most screen time. I find it refreshing that somemone is here to stick up for supporting characters because as much as I love the trio and the originals the supporting cast might be my favorite part of TVD
And if you are really worried about the lack of stelena, delena, and klaus moments then just look back at the other top 3 moments post and you will be sure to find plenty

  • Anonymous

Haha, this article was so funny, and totally good to give shout-outs to the supporting cast. Woot woot for that.
BUT the best feminist moment this season for me was “Kaboom” or “Baboom” by one Ms. Katherine Pierce. I get that a lot of people think she’s a plot-device, but without her, we wouldn’t have TVD.  She is the well-spring from which every TVD plot flows.  And I think Katherine is the one truly feminist character on the show (Not Caroline. Sorry, Lucia, but Caroline, we love her, but she’s too frivolous and kind of really lives up to her nickname “Vampire Barbie”.) Katherine has this incredible and hard-won mixture of fierceness and self-awareness. She is the one who continually adapts, fights for what she believes in, shows initiative, and has an agenda. She gave birth to an out of wedlock child in 1490 Eastern Europe, and fled to England when she was 17.  She didn’t let the world’s most powerful vampires get the best of her. She didn’t wait for Elijah to commission the making of some obscure tonic that may or may not have revived her. No, she took matters into her own hands, and carved her own destiny. She not only managed to elude Klaus for five centuries, she also turned Damon and Stefan while she was at it, ensuring that she would see them again, no matter how far she would have to run and for how long. And did we not see her take on both the Salvatore brothers in the Masquerade episode (my favourite of all time so far) where she was ambushed, sealed in, and weaponless but still managed to almost come out on top in that fight? She was alive during all the big feminist movements we know of.  She doesn’t let love get in the way, except when it really counts.  She makes no apologies for her shortcomings. The ultimate power a person can have over someone is the ability to cause pain at will. No one has that kind of power over Katherine. And just when we think we know what makes Katherine tick (self-preservation), she lets us in on a layer of complexity we didn’t know she possessed. She is a master of ruse and of deception, but she is also capable of revealing deeply felt truthfulness. She’s a mother, a lover, a killer, a healer, a survivor. And for me, her “Ba-boom” was just a great exclamation mark for her awesomeness.

  • Heroine_TV

Oh, I totally agree about Kat’s awesomeness. But I’ve written about 4 different Katherine-centric posts (2 for this site), so thought I’d change it up a bit. :)

  • Heroine_TV

Thank you! That really means a lot.

As for Caroline’s strength, lots of older vamps have been killed by younger vamps and even humans on this show, so it’s not entirely inconsistent. Plus, the vamp mythology is not entirely clear or consistent on this show in general.

  • Anonymous

Oh yes, of course :) I loved your post, and what you wrote about your #1 is my favorite post in this whole Top 3 series. It was hilarious and brought up great points! And I didn’t even realize how much I liked Katherine until I finished writing all that, haha. You made me think.

  • Sasha

Wow, what you said about Kat was AMAZE.

  • Sasha

    Great article, Lucia!
“For one thing, someone finally cared about the cannon fodder on this show.” That’s great, and so true. We needed a voice for the people on that council.

  • Heroine_TV

Thank you so much! And yes, Miss Katherine Pierce has that effect on me as well! There’s no end to the word count when it comes to her. I always say that I’d love the very end of the series to be everyone dead, except for Katherine (she’s the consummate survivor), as she surveys the carnage and says, “I’ll think about that tomorrow.” Hee. Too dark?

  • TVD*fan

oh god…your “retractable-stake gift bag” seriously cracked me up :D

  • Sonia

Great write ups! I have to confess I barely pay attention to Matt scenes. You have inspired me to rewatch this particular scene because I had no recollection of it. As to Caroline, I love love love her to bits, but yeah, again…dilution of mythology always gets my goat. If the only thing that a vamp needs to beat up an older vamp is to be angrier..do the writers intend to tell me Damon and Stefan aren’t angry enough at Klaus or they weren’t angry enough at Katherine when she first came to MF and messed with their lives? It took quite a lot for Damon and Stefan combined to over power her in the Masquerade. Or maybe only Caroline can get angry enough. Maybe they should get her good and angry and she can take down Klaus all  by herself!!! LOL

Sorry for the rant but that scene disappointed me because of the inconsistent writing. As did the Stefan fighting compulsion scene. I don’t like it when they retcon their own rules.

I love your #1 scene pick, though! Any scene with Alaric is great. If he’s with his bestie, it’s even better!

  • dman

Great job describing Katherine’s awesomeness. She should be admired for the strengths she possess. We all know about her negative qualities so it’s nice when someone just concentrates on the things she’s good at.

  • sarah

    THIS!!

  • Hi Bye

I agree Kat is awesome, but the feminist in me most definitely doesn’t look up to her as some kind of feminist character to admire…

I would hope that the only way for a character to be truly feminist wouldn’t be to never let love get in the way, never acknowledge or try to better ones flaws and to always/mostly put self preservation before anything else and to have most of your actions stem from selfishness.  Those are weaknesses, not strengths.  I’d like to think that a character can be “feminist” but also still be a decent person who cares about others and lets people in close and not have to be a hard, cruel woman who’s only interest is only to look out for herself (yes I know I was simplifying things there but that is what Kat is in the simplest terms).

And yeah, Kat has done an incredible job keeping herself alive until now but I find it difficult to applaud her for it when it’s been at the expense of so many innocent people…

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I think that Caroline, Bonnie and Elena are feminists just as much as Kat is in her own way.  Each of them fights for what they believe in and they won’t back down.  They love with all their hearts and do anything for their loved ones.  They each defy gender stereotypes in their own ways; Caroline has shown time and time again that she’s a whole lot more than just “Barbie”, Bonnie is a powerful witch goddess who wouldn’t let Jeremy walk all over her with his ghost problems and we’ve seen just this season how Elena has shed her victim label and become independent, smart and started standing up for herself.  And then there’s the fact that I don’t think you need to be “unfeminine” to be feminist.

You say that Kat adapts, shows initiative and has an agenda.  Well, I’d say that the other girls do too, it’s just that it’s a whole lot easier for Kat since she won’t let herself care about others which pretty much gives her a free reign to do anything and cause as much havoc as she wants to.  The other girls live by other rules.  In TVD world caring gets you dead and the fact that Elena, Caroline and Bonnie still care and love to the extent they do is very brave of them, braver than Kat.

So yeah, I think that they are just as worthy of recognition as characters to look up to :D  We have a bunch of admirable female characters on TVD i’d say.

Not trying to start a debate or anything… I think your post is great, I just don’t really agree ;)

  • Emokun25

Wonderful recap, so funny and insightful. You have gained a fan today Lucia, I will be heading straight to your site from here.

I too would not have picked Matt, but after reading through your reasoning I totally get it. I kinda feel bad for Matt `cos I think his character is probably on the chopping block. Besides that awesome scene in the pool, he really hasn`t brought much to the show so far and the writers are always trigger-happy and always in need of a sacrificial lamb. Someone is bound to die soon and it probably would be Matt.

I`m completely with you on Caroline and Alaric. They are both the strongest supporting cast, even more than Bonnie, even though Bonnie is needed more since she is the only Witch of the show.  Caroline`s fierceness and strength, combined with her sweetness and girliness make her a very interesting character. As for the question of her being able to defeat Damon, I think Damon was caught by surprise, and that`s the only reason she was able to defeat him. Not to mention she ran soon after, had she stayed, I`m pretty sure she might have had her heart ripped off.

Alaric is another favorite of mine and he brings a lot to the show. I was heartbroken at the beginning of the season when he moved out of the Gilbert house(while that awesome song “A Drop in the Ocean” played), even though that was the first time I watched TVD. Since then I had gone and watched all the TVD episodes backwards, and his and Damon`s bromance is the strangest, yet satisfying relationship I`ve ever seen on television. I was excited to see him take a stand finally to stand for the people in “Disturbing Behaviour”. After all, “people are people too”

  • Charlie

I loved seeing Matt step up ,be proactive and finally be a part of the action. I’ve always been a little on the fence about whether I like his character…mostly because he has just been passive and let life crap all over him (poor guy) and theen there was that whole lying to Caroline debacle..but here he was willing to kill himself to help his friends. He was so brave and selfless I found myself really rooting for him – and his plan wasn’t too shoddy either. The gang should have let him in on the secret earlier..they need all the plotting advice they can get ;)

  • http://twitter.com/HannahSuzanne3 Hannah D

I agree but everyone seems to be harping on the fact that Caroline beat Damon and while I love that it happended I do kinda think that while Damon wanted papa Forbes dead, I don’t think he was giving Caroline his 100% because he gave up and didn’t go after them when Caroline ran off so I think we should all just let the fact the Caroline beat Damon go because lets face it  we need these 2 for some comic relief in Mystic falls

No one can deliver one-liners like Caroline and Damon

  • Heroine_TV

Thanks so much for reading, you guys! And all the nice comments.

For me the Caroline moment wasn’t so much about her being *stronger* than Damon, but her heart and courage. Her passion! She was being a hero to her father, even though he had just tortured her and tried to change who she was. She didn’t do the math on who was older or stronger, or even care. She just did what had to be done. I thought it was brave and selfless, and showed her big heart.

Also, I would add again that younger vamps and even HUMANS have killed older vamps on many occasions on TVD (Lexi, Pearl, Anna, Elijah, etc.), so the rules aren’t really that consistent. Caroline getting the better of Damon briefly is not an anomaly. Anyone can get the better of anyone on this show with the right motivation, circumstances, or planning. Look at the all the dead Originals!

    ^^THIS is amazing. :-D

  • rose

    I couldn’t agree more. :-)

  • Anonymous

I don’t see it as Caroline necessarily being stronger than Damon, but more opportunistic and determined. After she head butted him she zipped out of there, she didn’t stick around because Damon is older and stronger.

  • dman

I understand what you’re trying to say but that whole scenario between them was too unrealistic for me. The question I have is would she have been able to do that to season one Damon? What would have been his reaction?
Also, do you think Damon has become too soft? What do you think Damon fans?

  • CheckeredYcats

I actually love Damon in season 3. I think he’s the perfect combination of season 1&2. I don’t think he’s become too soft, I think he could still kick some @$$ whenever he wanted to, he just cares now.

I don’t think Damon was actually putting all his effort into that fight with Caroline, but that scene seriously irked me! I don’t hate Caroline and I know she quickly became a fan favorite, but I think the writers are playing that up a bit too much. They need to seriously tone her down to make it more realistic since it has been pointed out several times that you’re not very strong when you’re first turned. She’s only been a vamp for what, 6 months? I also didn’t like that she was able to take on all the tomb vamps in 3.07.
I love Caroline, but please writers, tone it down a bit!

  • Anonymous

Damon has been soft this season if we compare him to Ripper Stefan and Klaus, but I think his character has been consistent throughout the seasons. In S1 he said he came wanting to destroy the town, and now he wants to protect it. We’re seeing his follow through of that statement here in season 3. But I think he still seems dangerous. Not in a menacing way, but in more a fragile way, if that makes any sense. Fragilely dangerous. When Damon loves, he loves in an all-consuming way, and Damon loves Elena. When he hates, he really hates, and I think the person Damon hates the most is himself. Then add to those intense feelings the loneliness he must be feeling with Stefan seemingly wanting very little to do with him. This is shaping up to be a perfect storm for either a major Damon breakdown or a major Damon breakthrough. He could either regress or really make great strides in the way he contends with this feelings. I’m hoping it’s the later!

  • BlesseD

Thanks Lucia for some love for supporting characters.  Matt Davis, Candice Accola and Zach Roerig have blown me away frequently with their performances (often in wordless moments–especially impressive) by just embodying their characters so completely and living the story.  I have really been missing more Alaric!

Enjoyed the whole vibe of your post.  Will definitely check out Heroine TV.  BTW, Loved the “Firefly” reference! :) (…so I think there should at least be a statue erected in my honor in the
Mystic Falls Town Square. Or perhaps on a small muddy planet where
people might sing songs in my honor?)
