TheTorchOnline has an extended interview with Vampire Diaries executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, a portion of which a lot of you will remember from the TCA panel. They touch on how they came to work together on this particular project, vampires as metaphor (let’s just say it doesn’t look they’re heading down the abstinence road), morality, self-control and Stefan’s natural instincts, and how they’re following the book (and how they’re not):
TheTorchOnline: How closely are you following the books?
Julie Plec: I like to say that if you look at the gross content of the books, we’re following it incredibly closely. But if you look at the timeline, it’s varying quite a bit. We’re telling some of the stories a lot faster, some of them a lot slower. But the core relationships are very specific, and very much what we’re playing with.
Read the entire interview. (Julie drops a MAJOR book spoiler in here, so if you’re avoiding those, you have been officially warned.)
And Kevin Williamson has a few soundbites in this LA Times story on vampires in popular culture: Fresh blood for vampires and their followers.
“Vampires are the bad boys,” says [Vampire Diaries] co-creator Kevin Williamson in trying to explain their popularity. “They’re dangerous, but they’re also just sexy and they can protect you. You can challenge them. There’s so much there — epic love, epic romance, epic epic! Everyone wants their life to be epic.”
