TV Line‘s Meg Masters and Entertainment Weekly‘s Mandi Bierly caught up with Vampire Diaries Executive Producer Julie Plec right after tonight’s East coast airing of the season finale to discuss 1) what just happened?! and 2) where we may be headed in Season 3, the so-called Year of the Originals. Needless to say, but we’ll say it anyway: SPOILERS!

XX

TV Line delves into the changing dynamics amongst the cast of characters with Julie – such as where Alaric will fit in now that Jenna is gone:

TVLINE | That was a very sweet moment between Alaric and Jeremy. Are you perhaps setting up Ric to be the Gilbert kids’ new parental figure?
We made a promise to Matt Davis to take Alaric and give him a good kick in the ass, and really make better use of that character. We wanted to give him a stronger point-of-view and a richer on-screen life, and this is just one of many things that we hope to be able to do. Matt’s a terrific actor and very valuable part of the show, and to finally be able to have Alaric in the midst in a way that we can really do some great emotional and supernatural stuff with him is really exciting.

And Entertainment Weekly goes in-depth with Julie about the who and the what and the when – and when Paul Wesley realized where it was all going:

It’s so funny. He sat down with me [earlier this season] and said, “I need to have a really serious conversation with you.” And I was like, “Uh huh.” And he said, “Stefan’s great as the hero, and he’s so admirable and he’s so honorable, and I love that about him. But as an actor, I feel like it would be great if we could dirty him up a little.” And I was like, “Uh huh.” And he looked at me, and he’s like, “You’re already doing this, aren’t you?” And I said, “Uh huh.” [Laughs] It was so great. Just as he was starting to feel like Stefan can do no wrong, we had been creating this almost heightened sense of heroism for Stefan for months knowing where we were going with it.

Wait! Does that mean, we’re not seeing any Stefan and Elena scenes next season? They can’t really do that, right? As much as I love badass Stefan, but… NO! :(

“Bad” Stefan returning means that the part of himself that he has tried to keep hidden from everyone, Elena especially, is going to become impossible for him to keep secret. Elena will finally see and understand what that struggle Stefan suffers through really means; and how dangerous he can truly be. It goes back to Season 1 when Stefan goes on his blood binge and Elena says to Damon “He’s not like you,” and Damon’s response is “He doesn’t WANT to be, it doesn’t mean that he isn’t.”

It’s what we’ve all been saying all along: the eternal struggle of being a vampire is to reconcile those two parts of yourself. The humanity and the evil killer. It’s not black and white. I can’t wait to see what that journey means for Stefan, and what it means for Elena and her understanding of who Stefan is and what he has to potential to become. Whether that’s good or evil.
