The Vampire Diaries TVAccording to Marcos Siega, shooting for episode one of the Vampire Diaries begins in four weeks. From the way those dates stack up, it looks they’ll be heading off to Georgia (where Julie Plec is currently scouting for Elena’s house in Atlanta, if she isn’t lost in the airport) to start filming and then flying back for the panel at San Diego Comic-Con. (Who will be attending the panel is not yet known.) Quite what this means for the rumours that the pilot will be shown at Comic-Con remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Kevin Williamson is busy staying up late and working on the next episode, even if he is taking breaks to watch True Blood. We’d say he was paying far too much attention to the wrong vampires, but as it’s True Blood, we think we can let it slide. ;) [Um, I watch True Blood, too! -Vee]

On a tangent, we’re still getting a lot of comments on the subject of Elena not being blonde and how that ‘ruins’ the whole plot regarding Katherine. Putting all feelings of disappointment over Elena not being a blonde aside, we just want to say that Nina Dobrev is featured in an old photograph as Katherine in the extended trailer, and will have brown hair and eyes for both roles. The plot still works, they’re just both brunette instead of blonde. Hopefully that fact will help alleviate the worries some people have on the issue.

huh i dont get it i thought they already shot the first ep

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net Vee

They shot the pilot (episode 100), which may or may not end up being the actual first episode of the series. Sometimes pilots make it to the air and sometimes they re-shoot. KW and JP have mentioned writing up outlines for episode 101, which would be the next episode.

  • Lexie

makes more sece since they are shooting in a different location now. maybe they will stick to the books more in 101 and maybe add mere into it, but i don’t think that would happen, also they could be possible re-cast or switching actors around, but i don’t care anymore, i hope they make the show feel like the books.

I think that what ruins Katherine / Elena is that Katherine is german and when I think german I usually think blond. I don´t mean to offend anyone, don´t get me wrong, but that´s a big change from the books and usually big changes don´t please the books fans. Besides, make Nina blond wouldn´t be so hard, I think that´s why everybody is so frustrated with the hair. Just for the record I´m a brunette.

I don’t see what the big deal is. Hair is just hair. It’s the character that counts. Besides, if the show was exactly the same as the book, what would be the purpose of watching it? It would be like a rerun. And the show has to attract a new audience beyond the readers.

  • Jezebel

They got more complaints about Katherine/Elena’s hair?! I figured the whole Bonnie situation would cause more distress.

  • Tara

I think, re: hair color, that in addition to Katherine being German, Elena is the “Ice Princess” and her paleness/blond hair/blue eyes really adds to that. She is supposed to seem remote, untouchable, a bit cold, to people who don’t know her. Warm brown eyes just don’t evoke the same feeling…and this “Elena” seems to be so…*nice*. Wrong wrong wrong. And…with Stefan’s darker Italian features, think about how striking a couple they made.

Stefan thinks appearances matter–dress as befits your station, yes? The books are just so descriptive (Elena wears a lot of cool colors and pastels–she even smells like frickin’ violets) and it’s just…annoying to have so many changes, even when they are superficial. It loses so much of the imagery that made the books special.

Also, I just like to argue. :D

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/ Red

Yeah, I agree with you. Elena being blonde did add to the imagery of the books, and I loved the contrast between Stefan and Elena. Someone also commented in my LJ that with Elena being brunette, it looked like she was related to the Salvatores in the promo images, which is a valid point and related to what you’re saying. It’s not something I can get worked up over anymore, though. I guess I’ve just come to terms with the fact that this is going to be a different story with different characters, and I’m just going with the flow with that in mind.

My main reason for mentioning it in the article is simply because A LOT of people are assuming that Katherine will remain blonde and not look like Elena at all… and the lack of logic behind that just makes my head hurt, given that Nina is playing both characters. Did these people not even consider that if Elena is brunette, then Katherine would be, too? O_o

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/ Red

I’m not convinced that Katherine is going to be at all German in this. Given that Stefan and Damon are Mystic Falls natives, I suspect that Katherine will be, too. Or maybe from elsewhere in the USA. She’d stick out too much being German in a little, civil war era town. :/

I’m also not convinced Nina would look good blonde. Certainly not the shade Elena is supposed to be, as her complexion is too dark. I’d rather have a natural brunette than a really fake-looking blonde.

  • http://suckerforvampires.wordpress.com/ Sucker for Vampires

that´s true! I think Nina is pretty, but maybe her hair could be a just a littlle lighter… I don´t know. I totally agre with Tara. Elena is the ice queen! But that doesn´t bother me as much as the actress they casted for Bonnie. She´s all wrong as Bonnie!!! She would make a great Caroline or maybe even Meredith. And the actres they casted as Caroline would be a great Bonnie! I wish they would just swap them. I guess that the actress are good and all, but it´s just not Bonnie!

  • Emma

I like Elena with brown hair more than with blonde…maybe they thought blonde Elena would smack too much of Sookie from True Blood (season 2 has come out, whoo!), but then again, brunette Elena is drawing comparisons with Bella from Twilight, so I guess it’s a lose-lose. You know what, with all the hair complaints, maybe they should have just given Elena green hair, that way everybody’s pleased. ;D Hahaha Anyway, I think the whole “her hair is wrong!” issue is really pointless and insignificant (sorry). It’s just hair, and from the photo of Katherine, well, she looks exactly the same.
Also, I think Katerina makes a great Bonnie.

  • Mel

At first I was hung up on the whole brunette thing…Now I’m hung up on the acting. Sorry…I just don’t like Nina Dobrev. I’m sure she is a great person and all but her acting? Doesn’t spark anything remarkable for me as her portraying Elena. God, even if they chose a red head for the lead I would still be looking at the acting. I have watched some recent actresses do a better job than I saw in 5 minutes on the CWTV trailer.

They changed way too much. Her little sister was a key character…Now she has a brother? But whatever. I just really hope it doesn’t copy off of Buffy when in fact this book was out before Buffy was even created.

I am older now…but I still love this series. I’m disappointed with the changes, but I got over it. I’m stunned by the casting though. I can imagine so many who could bring this show quite possibly further than Buffy or Twilight has gone.

Do I think this is like Twilight? I thought the movie was ok. My preference though, is still LJ Smith. I love all her books and yes still as I even grew to adult. She has amazing imagery and this is what most fans are concerned won’t work for this series.

Little details of why they can go out in daylight…I mean even in the trailer its blue and in the books the blue matches Elena’s eyes. So I’m thinking little tiny details might get flamed a bit.

As for them not getting a blonde and because of Sookie on True Blood? I don’t even think that should have been in their heads at all. Shoot if they were trying to stay away from a blonde as a leading lady then I would suggest Red head! Tired of all these black haired, blonde, and brunette actresses being front stage. And yes, I’m blonde/brown haired who likes to dye her hair red.

Hate to say it Williamson, but idea aside this may falter unless some drastic changes are made…and no I’m not talking about changing hair color and eye color…Acting to match the books personality and character would be good. Then there would be less flames…Just my opinion.

Everyone should just be bald, obvs. And albinos. I’d definitely watch a series about bald albino vampy love. ;)

Honestly, I’m also past caring about the hair colour issue. (Well, Candice is still way too cute to be Caroline, but that’s demeanor in general, not just appearances.) Sure, it would be great if things were closer to the novels, but at this point, I’m just hoping they keep a good, intriguing story, and have decent acting and dialogue. *Crosses fingers for the next 3 months*

Well as far as the pilot airing? It’s not uncommon for Pilots to undergo a “re-shoot”. I mean, if we go with the whole vampire theme, CBS series Moonlight actually had a totally different set of supporting cast minus Alex O’Laughlin.

We know that there is a Pilot being shown considering how some critics have already written reviews about it. Secondly, in order for a show to be picked up (unless the studios reallllly love it), generally there is a demo/rough draft which gives a prospectus on the tone and feel for a show.

Plus, we know that LJ’s agent has seen a test Pilot of sorts as mentioned in her recent blog.
    So there IS something out.

What we could be possibly seeing at Comic-Con could be prefaced as a rough draft of the Pilot in which things may or may not be changed when it airs in September. For all we know, they could add or change scenes around.

By the way, Marcos Siega has done work on Dexter, and horror flick Driv-Thru. So I really am excited to see how he’ll take on the series in general.

Ohh and for the love of God, seriously this whole Hair Affair is ridiculous! The whole point of it was for Stefan and Damon to feel an instant reminder or Katherine. It was to set up the idea to the boys that maybe she were like their maker.

I don’t think it matters what she looks like as long as the plot is as true in spirit to the books.

  • http://suckerforvampires.wordpress.com/ Sucker for Vampires

I just think Nina isn´t icey enough for Elena. And I´m not really happy with Paul as Stefan… from what I saw on the videos, he isn´t deep enough

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/ Red

“The Hair Affair”, I like it. It should forever be known as that in fandom from this day forth. ;)

  • Nilly

    Oh, good. (:

Have they found a Meredith yet?

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net Vee

Haven’t heard anything yet! I think when she is cast will depend on when she is introduced in the series – we don’t know what they have in mind for her character yet.

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net Vee

Not to mention the fact that I’m sure the pilot is sent out to critics so far in advance to gauge reaction. It’s also why so many pilots leaked online last year – I seem to remember the fans/critics having a LOT to say about “Life On Mars” and the show was almost completely overhauled before it hit the air as a result.

  • Nilly

    Oh, okay.
I just hope they keep her really close to the books, I love her character, and they need someone like her.

  • Lily

I agree with almost everything you said. I’m not as upset about Margaret/Jeremy thing and.. *I* thought the Twilight movie was one of the worst movies I’ve ever watched. (Just my opinion, no offence to those who liked it.)

But yeah, the idea of a brunette Elena has sortof grown on me but I really don’t like Nina Dobrev’s acting. I still think she’s too sweet-looking and she actually looks kinda awkward and shy sometimes in the trailers. She just doesn’t have the necessary appeal to portray Elena.

  • Tara

The internet just ate my reply. Gah! Allow me to attempt another, and let’s hope it doesn’t double post. :)

It only makes sense for Katherine to be brunette if Elena is brunette. I was actually slightly relieved to see the shot of Katherine (even if she wasn’t blond/German/noble/15th century etc.)–when we didn’t see her in the pilot script, on top of all those other changes, I guess it never occured to me that she could be changed, too.

18 years of details–very hard to let go of. I am resigned to the fact that the changes are not likely to be reversed. Good point about it being a different story with different characters.

18 years–TVD is old enough to vote!

  • Katie

oh who cares anymore if elena is brunette, seriously its getting super annoying with everybody mentioning this. WE GET IT, NOW GET OVER IT. i dont even like elena and i understand why they didnt make her an “ice queen” because why in the world wud they make the main character a bitch? i also really like paul as stefan and katerina as bonnie.

  • Jezebel

I always assumed from the subtle physical description and the last name *Sulez* that Meredith was of Hispanic descent. But considering that Kevin has altered the appearances of the characters;*Bonnie anyone?* it wouldn’t surprise me if Meredith turns out to be Asian, Indian, etc…and with RED hair;-)

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/ Red

At this point, I may be disappointed if she isn’t a redhead. The show doesn’t have one yet, after all. ;)

  • Nilly

Yeah, I agree, I don’t mind the change in Stefan and Bonnie’s looks because of how well they’re playing their characters.

LJS mentioned in one of her blogs, though, that Elena was supposed to be a bitch in the beginning, but then change to a more pleasant character.

I liked the old Elena better, the bitchy one, I don’t know why.

  • Vampires 4 Ever

Wow, I love this site. I just found it today!

However, i agree with nilly, elena was a bitch from the start and she should stay like that. after all her personality changed as she matured over time. otherwise, shes not really elena is she.

  • Mel

It’s not so much the hair or the damn eyes anymore. It all comes down to the fact that the changes will ultimately bring out major plot holes. Take a look at the books. LJ does a fabulous job with the details of her characters. She sets them in and then she gives us the imagery of those characters.

Williamson basically took the basis of these characters and changed it to adapt to HIS idea on screen. If I were LJ I kinda would have a problem with that. I would be up front and center demanding it be done right. Didn’t JK do that with the HP series. YUP! She didn’t want her books getting changed too much by what was seen in the movies. BRAVO to her. I wish LJ would have more say in this.

Will I watch it? Sure. It’s a vampire show. If they were green and purple and white still sporting fangs – I would still watch it. If it’s good that is.

I watch True Blood and have never read the books. I hear the show is different from the books. I am just happy with the incredible acting and the vampires! If Anna wasn’t the lead I would still be freakishly happy if the main actress could act. Learned her part and took an interest in it.

Elena is an ice queen and yeah a bitch. Some may not want to see a bitch on tv but did that deter Spelling from bringing Brenda on screen? What about Buffy? Sure she was sweet on her friends at times but she was also a colossal bitch to all those around her. Sorry I have Buffy issues, lol. Then there is Blair who has Bitch queen written all over her, and yet, she still has a heart.

If you want my opinion Leighton Meester would do a better job as Elena. And would you look at that brunette and BROWN eyes. Huh. I think they did a piss poor job of casting this.

They have already been parading around and ‘showing’ off for the CW so my guess is this so called cast is here to stay. I am betting it lasts only this season. I will be shocked if it lasts two seasons. Especially on a thursday night no less. Supernatural which I don’t really watch will top this show hands down.

I am just terribly disappointed that the casting wasn’t given careful consideration. Here’s hoping for a recast…that will probably not happen, sad to say.

Thinking I will stick to the hotness that is Eric on True Blood and the quirkiness that is Sookie…This upcoming show isn’t giving me that feel of MUST SEE, just my opinion.
