I like ian somerhalder he go do a great vampire and for the character that he will play he have good look and very handsome. but paul wentley is other because i dont think he his that handsome for me they could cast drew fuller because he look like the version o stefan on book. the rest of the cast i need to see it in action to critize

  • Victoria

If they switch the actresses for Bonnie and Caroline, make the Elena actress Meredith… cast the REAL Elena, change stefan’s actor and leave somerhalder as Damon…I MIGHT be able to handle the horror of the rest of the changes.

  • Beth

    I’m really disappointed. :(

  • katherine ( yes my real name )

I’m actually pretty pissed. they’ve taken something I have bene a following fan of since 1992 and turned it into a mockery of a teen twilight soap. NO MEREDITH? She alone is one of the major players in this series. Especially near the end. I dislike the chosen actors ( not personally ) for Elena and Bonnie and Caroline. Switch Caroline and Bonnie. I’m disgusted at the fact that they are removing the younger sister and replacing her with a teenage DRUG ADDCITED brother, for the sake of lusty female teens. Fail. No real Aunt Judith? Once again what 20 something going to college is going to raise these teenagers? Oh right only on the CW apparently. I am going to miss Aunt Judith. Mat and Vickie as a couple, makes me sick too. These books and this author was my childhood, and now I feel as though it’s going to be completely made into a 90210, Gossip Girl travesty. Bah.

  • Vee

Actually, Matt and Vicki(e) are brother and sister in the TV series, not a couple. Unless things got a LOT more interesting than I remember from reading the sides. ;)

  • M’lyn

I’m disappointed by most of the decisions, but I’m willing to give it all a chance. I am somewhat pleased about Somerhalder–he’s got a perfect look for Damon, and if he’s good enough for Lost than he should be good enough for TVD. At least he’ll be way better than most of the nobodies cast.

  • katherine ( yes my real name )

yes, thank you for that. i would edit here too if i could. i think the rest of my opinion, other than that, was looked over though. mhm. for those of you reading, MY MISTAKE.

  • http://www.salishna.net/ Adia

I’m …underwhelmed by the decisions. But then again, given all the other strange decisions being made, we really shouldn’t be surprised that the actors appearances are not living up to the book descriptions.

I’ve basically given up on it as a show with connections to the books or fandom. I’ll likely check it out when it airs for a laugh. Or perhaps play a drinking game to drink whenever something from the books appears :D

  • Emma

I’m actually pretty okay with these choices, although I’m wondering if they’re going to make Nina blonde (Elena’s blonde hair was actually rather important; looking like Katherine and whatnot), and Caroline and Bonnie should be switched. I love Ian for Damon, as he was always my choice, and I was hugely pleasantly surprised to see Paul as Stefan! I thought he was fantastic in “Fallen” and remember thinking that he should be in more stuff, so it was great to see him get such a big role! I’m not liking this whole “Elena’s druggie younger brother” thing, but Margaret was pretty much a non-entity in the books, anyway, so I guess we’ll just see what happens. I am disappointed in the elimination of Meredith, however. Actually, they seem to have changed quite a bit about the series, but I’m keeping an open mind. I was really excited to hear it was being made into a TV show, and I’m still excited for it. To be honest, I’m really just uber-excited to see Paul as Stefan (Whitmore?). So…I’m going to reserve judgment till I see it.

  • Marissa

The cast is crap. Stick to the book or scrap it. The Vampire Diaries IS what it is because of the original characters, how each play off each other in the books and what the tv series is doing is ripping apart the very essence of the story.

It has lost its appeal, its innocence and its horror appeal.

TVD IS NOT a Buffy, Its not True Blood, Its not The Hills or Gossip Girl or any other crap they are feeding to teens today.

Regardless of the romance and the vampire part..The American Civil war was a huge part of the story. I’m Australian, but appreciated the book more because it had a certain level of reality. Bonnie’s history too…How can you track that Actress’s history back to the Druids???

This is one VERY unhappy fan!!

  • Cynthia

This cast is a serious joke. Is this a April Fool’s joke? None of the cast even remotely resembles the book. If this is what the show is going to be like, let’s hope like hell the show doesn’t get picked up. I feel like the books have been violated in a terrible way. Don’t get me started about Bonnie, Damon or Elena. Just don’t get me started. Are they trying to kill off the books’ old fanbase? You know, the ones who could actually buy the DVD sets of the show? I’m extremely disappointed and sick. I knew there would be a few changes. But this is just disgusting. I know I won’t be watching. From the looks of it, a whole lot of fans won’t be watching. I hope CW doesn’t get ahold of any more LJS’s stuff to slaughter.
    Another VERY unhappy fan!

  • Shortangel

I agree that Drew Fuller would make a better Stefan than this other guy that they are bringing in. Not to mention that he is more similar to the gentleman playing Damo. And if you remember in the series they are described as similar except for thier hair and a few other things. And what is up with not having calm, cool, and collected Meredith? She is a seriously major role in the series. And cute little Bonnie with all that red curly hair?? I mean what the heck are they even basing the show on? They are changing major things, and it’s like they aren’t even really going from the book at all. It is very upsetting to me! I think that this show is going to be a flop if they don’t get someone in there to change things around and make it right. Just my personal opinion, but I am VERY unhappy about this! And I have no intention of watching the show.

  • steely

i actually am really happy. ian and paul are HOT and i really like them both from what ive seen

  • Emma

I agree with you about Paul and Ian! I guess we’re the only two fans happy about this (although I definitely see everybody else’s point of view).

  • Danielle

Obviously things change when books are translated into television shows or movies.

I’m mostly okay with the changes.

Making Elena a brunette, isn’t really a big deal. In books descriptions matters, but in TV shows how many times does hair color actually come up in conversation? We don’t need descriptions, because we can see the people. We don’t have to imagine them. So I’m mostly okay with the Elena casting choice. I liked Nina in that Lifetime movie she was in.

Giving Elena a little brother also makes sense. It gives her conflict at home, and he also gets a storyline. A much younger sibling doesn’t really do anything story wise.

Ian as Damon works for me. Damon isn’t supposed to be in high school, so him being Stefan’s older brother works.

The Stefan casting is fine. I haven’t seen Paul in much (saw him on Smallville I think?). He’s not what I imagined. But I’m willing to give him a chance. I hated Leighton Meester as Blair on Gossip Girl when she was first cast, and now she is like the best thing on the show. So who know?

Katerina Graham as Bonnie is love. I’ve been fallowing her career for awhile now (she’s a model, actress, producer, singer) and I love that they changed Bonnie. This is the times we live in people. A mostly white cast doesn’t work. We need diversity. I hope they play up Bonnie/Damon. Because Ian and Katerina are just to pretty not to.

I’ve never seen the rest of the cast in anything except for the guy playing Matt. He was in Friday Night Lights. He played a slimball, but I thought he did a good job.

NGL, I haven’t read these books since I was 11 years old (I’m 22 now), so maybe I’m fine with most of the casting because it’s been awhile? idk.

  • Medusa Sparrow-Winchester

WHAT…THE…HELL…HAVE THEY DONE TO VD?! They’ve taken a BESTSELLER and have slaughtered it! PLUS L.J Smith doesn’t have a say in this.

200 year old American vampire brothers called Whitmore? I’l stick my toe up thier backside! Try 500 year old ITALIAN vampire brothers called SALVATORE!

And, what’s this about Meredith? Why isn’t she there? Meredith is the heart and soul of Elena and Bonnie, she should be there.

Is it me, or is the cast just pretty people? Have someone like JENSEN ACKLES playing Damon and JARED PADALECKI playing Stefan! I’m just disappointed in the whole tv show thing.

LISA JANE SMITH’S BOOKS (ALL OF THEM) DESERVE TO BE MOVIES, NOT TV SHOWS!

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqOU3P6rJ8E&feature=channel_page jesse

I auditioned for stefan whitmore, but i think auditioning through video with no props, backround or characters in the short it made it tough. good job on the rest of the cast, looks like theyve really gotten an experienced cast for the most part.

  • Arya

I loved the books when I was younger, and recently re-read them. Looks like the show is going to be just another CW teen drama, lacking most aspects of the books that I actually enjoyed.

I dig Ian Somerhalder as Damon, but the problem with him is that no one would *ever* believe for a second that Elena would turn him down for Stefan (of course, I thought the same thing about the books, too, so perhaps that’s appropriate).

All the other casting is atrocious. Elena’s supposed to have the whole ice queen thing going for her, and they cast a girl who looks like a model for Brasilian bikini waxes? Sigh. Re: Meredith, Vicki “Donovan,” and Aunt Judith being a college girl, and all the other changes– bad choices.

The series has great potential, but CW seems to be trying to replace what Smallville has become (pointless teen drama) without even making an effort to giving it the good start Smallville had.

  • Marissa

Elena is BLONDE!!! And she’s a strong, interesting charater – not the shy-looking flower they picked out. And I agree about the serious lack of major characters – even if it’s just based on the books and not an exact re-telling.
I LOVED this series when I first read it, and I think they should re-consider the whole cast based on actual descriptions of people and situations – not just what sells to highschool kids.
The Twilight Series gets four movies, why should Vampire Diaries settle for TV?
    I’m dissapointed.

  • Marissa

I love the drinking game idea! Although from the way this is going, you’d get little more than a buzz…

  • lisa

For anyone that says Elena’s haircolor is just a color, obviously has not grasped the concept of the books. It wasn’t just about describing what she looked like. Her blonde hair and blue eyes are what drove most of the damn books. It is what attracted Stefan and Damon to her in the first place.

Every single choice has been wrong. And I understand these are the times we live in..but I am sorry..Katerina IS NOT BONNIE. Not the Bonnie we know. Not the Bonnie that we love. She is bubbly, insecure, always positive oh and she gets scared really easily. It isn’t just about the red curly hair. It is about who Bonnie is. And Katerina WILL NOT BE BONNIE.

Don’t get me started on who they have to play Stefan. If they wanted to butcher this show with the cast and the script, the least they could do was at least change the damn title.

  • Amber O

I was so excited when I learned they were making Vampire Diaries into a tv show but now that I see the cast I am so disheartened.

The only two actors that I can agree with are Damon’s character (even is his eyes aren’t dark) and Matt. They are changing everything that is lovable about Bonnie’s pixi red-headed character, removing Margaret for a drug addicted teen brother, getting rid of Aunt Judith and Meredith…how wrong is all that?
But the biggest disappointment are the physical characteristics of Elena’s character who is blonde with blue eyes not dark. Does that mean they are going to change Katherine’s character to dark also since they are supposed to be almost-twins. And the choice for Stefan is so wrong on so many levels, it makes me ill. I am so upset about the changes. I read these books in `92 and kept them all these years because of my love for the story and characters and now CW is going to tarnish everything that L.J. Smith worked so hard to bring to life in connection with this story. So sad…

  • Amber O

On the positive, I can agree with Ian, but must disagree with Paul Wesley being Stefan. Drew Fuller would be a much better actor for that role, but again….anyone would be but Paul. Sorry.

  • Amber O

I don’t agree that Margaret was a non-entity in the book. Remember, if it weren’t for her, the little puff-ball of a kitten wouldn’t have gotten into the house. I think she helped to show how easy the innocence of children can be manipulated by evil with a pretty face (since the cat did turn out to be Katherine). She may not have had a large part in the books, but she was Elena’s weakness. Remember how she sacrificed herself to Damon when he threatened to feed from Margaret? Just in how you look at it I guess.

  • smithfan

I think, although the Ian dude is hot, I don’t think he’s cut out to be Damon, and I’m not particularly fond of his acting style in Lost either. I think we should all sign a patition and vote for Erik Fellows to be cast as Damon (all in favor say aye!!) The cast is very, very, very disappointing. The TV series might win over some new fans, which is probably what the producers are hoping for since they’re twisting the story and characters into something it’s not. I recon they’ll lose out on the real VD fandom, though.
I mean, I can understand why they exchanged Margaret for an original character – what kind of role will a two year old play, right? – but did they have to throw drugs into the mix? And what’s up with ‘Whitmore’? It’s like they’re trying to turn two Italian vampires into the friggin Winchester brothers – just stick to Salvatore, already! Now Stefan and Damon will be cast as just another couple of all-American vampires. Boo! We want the Italiano!!
It’s an outrage, really. And this is just for a TV series. Imagine what they’d do if they were making a movie about VD… yeah, maybe Ms Smith should keep our beloved characters and stories exclusively to literature. I’d burn down anyone’s houses who weren’t reputable film makers!

  • smithfan

I’m with you on that one – Margaret did play a ‘big’ role in the books. But because it’s a TV series, having a two year old sister constantly in danger or used against Elena would become boring and predictible. But she was excellent to put in the books, I just don’t think it will work on TV though.
If it was a MOVIE of VD… well, then I’d be all for Margaret!

  • Amber O

Well…4 years old actually, but you are correct. For a tv show it probably isn’t very logical to have someone so young in such a limited role. But maybe they should have made her a 9 year old sister or pre-teen instead of what they did do.

  • nancy

ok i like who they have cast for stefan and damon but OMG elena needs to be recast!! And theyre cutting judith and meredith out is crap!! They are major players in the 1st 2 books!! Elena has a brother now? GRRRRR! I am gonna give the show a try but with all the changes its gonna be hard to accept it and like it .

  • http://tooimpurenangel.livejournal.com Sarah

I love the drinking game idea. Although, for max drunkie effect, you should probably drink when something deviates from the books!

  • http://tooimpurenangel.livejournal.com Sarah

I keep hoping this will be like the Buffy pilot and the CW will realize what morons they’re being and bring in people who give a tonsil about the books.

  • Amber O

I checked out this Erik Fellows pics and dang! Your right, he would be an amazing Damon and maybe let Ian play Stefan. Either way, both are hot and that is what the Italian vampire brothers are supposed to be, not the boy-next-door type.

  • Johanna

Let’s face it…it’s a supernatural version of Dawson’s Creek. I bet they just read the books summary in wikipedia…and anyway they did not pay any attention while reading the characters’ description. Can’t we just so something to stop this disrespect toward Smith’s work?

  • Vee

“Can’t we just so something to stop this disrespect toward Smith’s work?”

Truthfully? No. But continue to speak out about unhappy you are with the changes, here and elsewhere. If you visit the TV series section of this site, there is a page called Fan Concerns, where you can leave your thoughts, as well as addresses for both Alloy Entertainment and the CW network. You can also leave comments on the CW’s message board at cwtv.com. (We highly, highly urge everyone to express their frustration/outrage/disappointment in a reasonable, polite manner – who will listen otherwise?)

  • Incanto

Erik Fellows is also a fan of The Vampire Diaries and LJ Smith. :) That alone skews me toward really, really wanting him as Damon, because he actually knows the role inside-out if he’s not only read but enjoyed the books, so even if he didn’t get cast because they think he’s a worse actor than Ian (which is debatable, but I’ve never seen anything Mr. Fellows has been in, so I can’t say), I think that extra knowledge would more than make up for the difference.

  • Shay

Stefan (Paul Wesley) in NO way fits the part! For Elena she has to have the blonde hair a true blonde! And I’m not sure with the girl playing Bonnie. Meredith is a HUGE player in the book I can’t see why she has been excluded!
The way I see it…. if you’re not going to stick to the book you’re going to have A LOT of very upset people who will not watch the show. It’s as simple as that! If it’s to be a success listen to the book readers! We read them we love them and know what we want!

  • Amber O

You are so correct in saying that Meredith is a huge player of the book considering it is her grandfather whom was bitten by Klaus and therefore tells them what wood to use to help damage him.

Elena MUST be a natural blonde and try as they might, pale. But either way, the chick they chose is horrible, too mousy and dark.

  • Amber O

A definite plus to actually know what and how your character is suppose to be like before you get to the set.

  • http://wingsofanangelcharity.blogspot.com/ Juuri Kuran

I agree with you Katherine. :] I may be a new Vampire Diaries fan, but I see where you’re coming from. Hopefully, LJ Smith is helping the director and putting in her word on what things should look like, etc. it is her book. I think if this tv series works out, it’ll be the new Twilight Saga, only with a twist. x]

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/tvseries/detailed-vampire-diaries-tv-series-synopsis/ Lizzie

Elena is supposed to be blonde! I guess they might dye her hair and give her contacts, but I can’t see Nina Dobrev like that. Also, Bonnie is supposed to have red hair. The rest of the cast is good I guess.

  • Angela

I’ve been a huge fan of LJ Smith ever since I found The Forbidden Game in a bookstore 15 years ago. From there, I discovered all of her wonderful stories, including The Vampire Diaries.

Personally, I don’t care if they deviate from the source material in the process of creating the tv series; some of the changes seem stupid and pointless, but I’d rather have the book come alive with its flaws, than have it not come alive at all. I’m just happy that a new audience will be introduced to these wonderful characters… and that, hopefully, it will motivate them to go out and buy the original (and superior) books they’re based off of.

As for the casting, I honestly think there are more important things to consider then someone’s hair color. As long as they can act and bring that character to life… I have no complaints. After all, I’d much rather have some one who “feels” the part, than someone who looks it but can’t act. So for now, I’m ok with all the cast decisions. Once the series starts though, my opinion could change depending how well they’re able to convey the characters they’re portraying.

For now, I’m trying to keep an open mind, and stay positive.

The only thing that really bugs me is the write-out of Meredith. It does seem like such a pointless waste…

  • ninia

you’re right, drew fuller would be perfect as stefan

  • michelle

Does anyone know where they going to show the pilot of the series. they are filmed it but just curious thought

  • Vee

The pilot is still filming in Vancouver.

  • michelle

    thank

  • mon

whoa!! y is Meredith character not in there?

  • Jen E

Drew Fuller? Are you kidding me? He is 29 years old and you expect him to fit in at a high school? He could be Elena’s dad. Paul Wesley is a great choice. He is an incredible actor and he is really good looking. To be honest I loved the books, but they have a lot of shortcomings, the fact the Damon turns into a crow and has a mid air fight with Stefan who turns into an eagle. Some of that is just silly and I am glad they made changes. VAMPIRE DIARIES CAN BE IMPROVED!

  • Jen E

Also about Meredith… this is only the first episode people. I bet they will add Meredith in later in the series.

  • Jenny

I can handle some of the changes from the book, but Stefan, Elena and Bonnie really need to be recast. They are obviously such important characters that the TV show might suffer if they aren’t cast right. I understand changes are made when adapting a book to a TV show but it seems like the overwhelming majority of people can’t stand the picks for these three characters. If CW want’s the support of VD fans to get behind their show they might want to listen to what they have to say.

  • Lily

Most of the cast is awful but the one I’m most disappointed with is Nina Dobrev’s. She looks nothing like Elena. Even if she performs well, she’s too sweet looking to pull it off completely. Neither would she have made a good Meredith imo, like some say.

I’d love to see Brooke Nevin portray Elena instead:
    http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0627492/

Another terrible casting is Candice Accola’s. These two are even worse than Katerina Graham’s imo. Ok, so no red curls and she’s black but Katerina at least has that bubbly-Bonnie look to her. I’m not very familiar with her acting but I think she can do it. And Zach Roerig is not really how I picture Matt but that doesn’t bother me as much as for the others :P

As for the vampire brothers, I have no doubt that both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder will do their characters justice… but only acting-wise. Though I think Ian looks his character more so than Paul does.

If the show does get picked up, I really hope they get someone else to play Elena!

  • Nina

Twilight isn’t really a sag. Plus Vampire DIaries is been out longer, and is a better written book.
