PopWrap‘s Jarett Wieselman rings Kevin Williamson up for a post-mid-season finale wrap-up and a range of topics are discussed, including the vision behind Tyler’s tranformation and where Tyler goes from here, Caroline’s determination to stick it out with Tyler and the fan response to her character this season, who we’re definitely seeing again and who we may not see again, just how worried we should be about what a werewolf bite can do to a vampire, and the surprise of Katherine as a character.
PW: I remember you once said that you love when, in the writing process, a character surprises you. Has that happened at all this year?
Kevin: The one thing that surprised me is Katherine. I always expected her to play into the show in little pieces, little scenes here and there – I didn’t expect her to drive an entire story with her at the center of it. And that’s because of Nina [Dobrev] being so good. Her performance is what made us go there. It’s just too delicious. And I don’t think I would have gone into Bulgaria, with a flashback of her giving birth, unless I really felt like she was a character I wanted to explore.

Zap2It‘s Carina MacKenzie brings us an on-set interview with Ian Somerhalder and she just so happened to get a sneak peek at the brand-spankin’ new sets for Damon’s bedroom/bathroom. (A lot of you were very excited about this when writer Caroline Dries dropped that they were being built during the Vampire Diaries Writers’ Room Live Tweet.) Ian discusses shooting in his birthday suit (funny, because it was his birthday), the launch of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation birthday project, Damon’s snazzy new bedroom, Stefan’s trust in Damon, and the “uphill battle” between Damon and Elena.
Brotherly love trumps girlfriend-stealing, even for Damon Salvatore. Over the last season and a half, Damon has come to the rather reluctant conclusion that he needs his brother. “I think that without him, it poses a major problem. Yes, of course he doesn’t have Stefan to contend with for Elena, but from my perspective he’s done so much sh** to Elena that it’s going to be a very uphill battle with that. Right now, it’s about protecting her.”

The Futon Critic‘s Jim Halterman has more from his interviews with Julie Plec, Michael Trevino, and Candice Accola.
Jim Halterman: Let’s talk about some of the other characters. Elena (Nina Dobrev) is definitely not the damsel in distress anymore. Was that a conscious effort that you wanted to see this year?
Julie Plec: Absolutely. We always want our female characters to have a point of view and be strong but by definition putting the ingenue in jeopardy is a part of the show so how you sort of make her really strong-willed and fierce and stand up for herself… we saw that a lot last season but this season she’s not necessarily letting other people make decisions for her anymore and it’s part of her growth and the way she is taking back her life, which has spun out of control. It’s nice to see Elena take a stand.
