Top 5 Most Valuable Players of Vampire Diaries Season 2, as voted by Vampire-Diaries.net readers:

#5: Elijah “Smith”
Vee: That Elijah was meant to be a one-off character has been well-documented in producer interviews now, but such is the power of Daniel Gillies that a boogeyman became a major player in Season 2. With Katherine locked away in the tomb and Stefan, Damon, and Caroline distracted with rescue plans and existential crises, it was Elijah that reminded us that vampires are capable of terrifying things – though we doubt any could match his panache. He was graceful, acerbic, and violent, though it’s interesting that we have never seen his “vamp face,” him biting anyone, or harming any human being. Think about it: He has a collection of vampire and werewolf hearts to his name, yet has never directly brought physical harm to a single non-supernatural being. Every kill was precise, every move strategic as he negotiated and heart-snatched his way closer to his goal: Revenge. Our deepest, darkest Season 3 wish? That Elijah’s smooth exterior will crack ever so slightly and he’ll be so righteously, blazingly pissed off with Klaus “killing” him, he’ll pull the damn dagger out himself. Dead, you say? It’s a temporary setback.

#4: Caroline Forbes
Red: Who would have thought that the bubbly, seemingly selfish cheerleader from the start of Season 1 would end up as the confident, capable and brave young woman that Caroline Forbes became by the end of Season 2? Becoming a vampire gave Caroline a boost of much-needed self-esteem and a chance to find out who she really was, and just what she was capable of. Right from the get-go Caroline started kicking ass, with Damon at the top of her list for his extremely poor treatment of her throughout the first season. But while being a vampire certainly makes her rock, Caroline shone through most of all with her loyalty to her friends, overcoming her own fears (admit it, who wasn’t as gleefully happy as Caroline was when she duped Katherine into the spelled room in Masquerade?) to help them out. Her steadfast friendship with Tyler Lockwood as he dealt with the implications and then the actuality of becoming a werewolf was heart-warming and heart-breaking all by itself. Throw in the fact that one bite from Tyler would kill her in a decidedly nasty way, her courage and loyalty becomes all the more special. Caroline has strayed far out of the kiddie pool this season, and we look forward to her swimming further towards the deep end in the next.

#3: Katherine Pierce
Vee: If there was a Vampire Diaries spin-off called The Adventures of Katherine Pierce: Nasty Little Slut & Selfish, Manipulative Bitch (Damon line! Stefan phrase!), I would watch it, revere it, and run the fansite. Katherine absorbs every epithet you throw her way and adds it to her armor and arsenal. She’s fun because she has no aspirations of super-villainy (booooooring!), tilts the Salvatore brothers on their axes just by existing (definitely not boring), and frankly it’s refreshing to have a kick ass lady around who will gleefully throw you under a bus full of school children who are on their way to the hospital because they are on fire. There is no mayhem too great for Ms. Katerina Petrova, no task too menial or dangerous if it means saving her own skin. But as much as we delight in her con artist nature, we also love those telling moments of humanity that pop up now again, whether it was telling her life’s story to Elena in Katerina or admitting she loved both Salvatore brothers in As I Lay Dying. But it’s the Katherine who was willing to step into sunlight without protection (to keep up the compulsion charade in The Last Day) that we look forward to watching stay one step ahead of Klaus and Rippah!Stefan in Season 3. We’re ready for plans X, Y, and Z, Ms. Pierce.

#2: Elena Gilbert
Red: Elena Gilbert has been through a hell of a lot in a short space of time, and it’s a wonder the poor girl is still sane. Season 1 was bad enough, what with being still raw from the death of her parents, finding out her boyfriend is a vampire, discovering that she was adopted, that her uncle is really her father and her mother is a vampire. You’d think that things couldn’t possibly get any worse, but this is the Vampire Diaries and our writers are evil, so of course we knew Elena was kind of doomed on that score. As if coming face to face with your evil, bloodsucking twin wasn’t shocking enough, Elena also had to deal with the horrifying revelation that she herself was a doppelganger destined to be sacrificed along with her friends in order to break a curse that could quite possibly doom the human race. Does she run screaming like most of us would? Far from it. Elena steps up to the plate and meets her fate head on, doing anything she can to ensure that those she cares about remain safe from harm, to the point of willingly sacrificing her own life. With that kind of grit and determination, it’s no wonder that Elena is on this list.

#1: Damon Salvatore
Vee: The overwhelming (but somewhat controversial) winner of the Season 2 MVP poll moves us to quote those who so ferociously defended their favorite in the comments. Spid3rM0nk3y says: “Damon did everything to save Elena this season. He backed off and settled for being her friend. He tried to be a better person. He did everything he thought was right (at that moment) even at the cost of her hating him. Yes, his actions were sometimes impulsive (well, most of the time) but he did everything in his power. So we see him change in this season. We see him put his problems with Stefan aside and they actually work together. We see him vulnerable, and also (like Katherine) we see who he was before becoming a vampire, and how this 146 years long journey changed him.” And Kat adds: “Damon. Of course Damon. Try to imagine The Vampire Diaries without Damon; it won’t work, it’s like the show’s heart and soul would be missing.” While we may not personally agree with the totality of that sentiment (we feel that way about several characters), here’s hoping the elder Salvatore will do a lot more swaggering and a lot less wallowing in Season 3. (Ian Somerhalder seems to share our sentiments.) After all, he has a little brother to save…and that means teaming up with BFF Alaric for bourbon and butt-kicking. Also, can we put in a vote for more Damon and Bonnie cooperation? Settle down, ‘shippers – we just like those two (non-romantically) sparking off each other in the spirit of Getting It Done. More, please!

Crissy’s personal honorable mention: Stefan Salvatore
Stefan Salvatore stepped up his game in Season 2. Right out of the gate in The Return — tussling with Katherine, force-feeding Uncle John his blood — the writers and Paul Wesley seemed to be on a mission to kick it up a notch with the character while staying true to the Stefan established in the first season. There’s a certain acceptance of who he is and who his brother is (in a post-Blood Brothers world) that made Stefan able to show more sides to his character — he plays mentor and buddy to Caroline, he’s more open about his love for his brother and the bond they share, he shows more passion with Elena, he rips hearts outta werewolves, and he shows resolve and determination to protect Elena from Katherine and Klaus. Just think of how monumentally different he can be: from the magnificent villainous Ripper — first glimpsed in The Dinner Party and resurrected in As I Lay Dying — to the heartbroken romantic lead (those goodbye scenes in Plan B and The Last Day). He’s a complicated vampire, that Stefan Salvatore, and one who deserves our recognition and respect. Minus points for not really dressing up for the Decade Dance.
Red & Vee’s Top 3:
- Caroline
- Katherine
- Elijah
Crissy’s Top 3:
- Caroline
- Elena
- Elijah
