Here they are – the results of our Season 2 MVP poll. But first, big congrats to Lindsay Sperling, the winner of our A Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls giveaway, courtesy of Smart Pop Books! Didn’t win this round? No worries. Keep an eye out for a new poll and another chance to win later today. Now, without further ado…

Top 5 Most Valuable Players of Vampire Diaries Season 2, as voted by Vampire-Diaries.net readers:

#5: Elijah “Smith”
Vee: That Elijah was meant to be a one-off character has been well-documented in producer interviews now, but such is the power of Daniel Gillies that a boogeyman became a major player in Season 2. With Katherine locked away in the tomb and Stefan, Damon, and Caroline distracted with rescue plans and existential crises, it was Elijah that reminded us that vampires are capable of terrifying things – though we doubt any could match his panache. He was graceful, acerbic, and violent, though it’s interesting that we have never seen his “vamp face,” him biting anyone, or harming any human being. Think about it: He has a collection of vampire and werewolf hearts to his name, yet has never directly brought physical harm to a single non-supernatural being. Every kill was precise, every move strategic as he negotiated and heart-snatched his way closer to his goal: Revenge. Our deepest, darkest Season 3 wish? That Elijah’s smooth exterior will crack ever so slightly and he’ll be so righteously, blazingly pissed off with Klaus “killing” him, he’ll pull the damn dagger out himself. Dead, you say? It’s a temporary setback.

#4: Caroline Forbes
Red: Who would have thought that the bubbly, seemingly selfish cheerleader from the start of Season 1 would end up as the confident, capable and brave young woman that Caroline Forbes became by the end of Season 2? Becoming a vampire gave Caroline a boost of much-needed self-esteem and a chance to find out who she really was, and just what she was capable of. Right from the get-go Caroline started kicking ass, with Damon at the top of her list for his extremely poor treatment of her throughout the first season. But while being a vampire certainly makes her rock, Caroline shone through most of all with her loyalty to her friends, overcoming her own fears (admit it, who wasn’t as gleefully happy as Caroline was when she duped Katherine into the spelled room in Masquerade?) to help them out. Her steadfast friendship with Tyler Lockwood as he dealt with the implications and then the actuality of becoming a werewolf was heart-warming and heart-breaking all by itself. Throw in the fact that one bite from Tyler would kill her in a decidedly nasty way, her courage and loyalty becomes all the more special. Caroline has strayed far out of the kiddie pool this season, and we look forward to her swimming further towards the deep end in the next.

#3: Katherine Pierce
Vee: If there was a Vampire Diaries spin-off called The Adventures of Katherine Pierce: Nasty Little Slut & Selfish, Manipulative Bitch (Damon line! Stefan phrase!), I would watch it, revere it, and run the fansite. Katherine absorbs every epithet you throw her way and adds it to her armor and arsenal. She’s fun because she has no aspirations of super-villainy (booooooring!), tilts the Salvatore brothers on their axes just by existing (definitely not boring), and frankly it’s refreshing to have a kick ass lady around who will gleefully throw you under a bus full of school children who are on their way to the hospital because they are on fire. There is no mayhem too great for Ms. Katerina Petrova, no task too menial or dangerous if it means saving her own skin. But as much as we delight in her con artist nature, we also love those telling moments of humanity that pop up now again, whether it was telling her life’s story to Elena in Katerina or admitting she loved both Salvatore brothers in As I Lay Dying. But it’s the Katherine who was willing to step into sunlight without protection (to keep up the compulsion charade in The Last Day) that we look forward to watching stay one step ahead of Klaus and Rippah!Stefan in Season 3. We’re ready for plans X, Y, and Z, Ms. Pierce.

#2: Elena Gilbert
Red: Elena Gilbert has been through a hell of a lot in a short space of time, and it’s a wonder the poor girl is still sane. Season 1 was bad enough, what with being still raw from the death of her parents, finding out her boyfriend is a vampire, discovering that she was adopted, that her uncle is really her father and her mother is a vampire. You’d think that things couldn’t possibly get any worse, but this is the Vampire Diaries and our writers are evil, so of course we knew Elena was kind of doomed on that score. As if coming face to face with your evil, bloodsucking twin wasn’t shocking enough, Elena also had to deal with the horrifying revelation that she herself was a doppelganger destined to be sacrificed along with her friends in order to break a curse that could quite possibly doom the human race. Does she run screaming like most of us would? Far from it. Elena steps up to the plate and meets her fate head on, doing anything she can to ensure that those she cares about remain safe from harm, to the point of willingly sacrificing her own life. With that kind of grit and determination, it’s no wonder that Elena is on this list.

#1: Damon Salvatore
Vee: The overwhelming (but somewhat controversial) winner of the Season 2 MVP poll moves us to quote those who so ferociously defended their favorite in the comments. Spid3rM0nk3y says: “Damon did everything to save Elena this season. He backed off and settled for being her friend. He tried to be a better person. He did everything he thought was right (at that moment) even at the cost of her hating him. Yes, his actions were sometimes impulsive (well, most of the time) but he did everything in his power. So we see him change in this season. We see him put his problems with Stefan aside and they actually work together. We see him vulnerable, and also (like Katherine) we see who he was before becoming a vampire, and how this 146 years long journey changed him.” And Kat adds: “Damon. Of course Damon. Try to imagine The Vampire Diaries without Damon; it won’t work, it’s like the show’s heart and soul would be missing.” While we may not personally agree with the totality of that sentiment (we feel that way about several characters), here’s hoping the elder Salvatore will do a lot more swaggering and a lot less wallowing in Season 3. (Ian Somerhalder seems to share our sentiments.) After all, he has a little brother to save…and that means teaming up with BFF Alaric for bourbon and butt-kicking. Also, can we put in a vote for more Damon and Bonnie cooperation? Settle down, ‘shippers – we just like those two (non-romantically) sparking off each other in the spirit of Getting It Done. More, please!

Crissy’s personal honorable mention: Stefan Salvatore
Stefan Salvatore stepped up his game in Season 2. Right out of the gate in The Return — tussling with Katherine, force-feeding Uncle John his blood — the writers and Paul Wesley seemed to be on a mission to kick it up a notch with the character while staying true to the Stefan established in the first season. There’s a certain acceptance of who he is and who his brother is (in a post-Blood Brothers world) that made Stefan able to show more sides to his character — he plays mentor and buddy to Caroline, he’s more open about his love for his brother and the bond they share, he shows more passion with Elena, he rips hearts outta werewolves, and he shows resolve and determination to protect Elena from Katherine and Klaus. Just think of how monumentally different he can be: from the magnificent villainous Ripper — first glimpsed in The Dinner Party and resurrected in As I Lay Dying — to the heartbroken romantic lead (those goodbye scenes in Plan B and The Last Day). He’s a complicated vampire, that Stefan Salvatore, and one who deserves our recognition and respect. Minus points for not really dressing up for the Decade Dance.

Red & Vee’s Top 3:

  • Caroline
  • Katherine
  • Elijah

Crissy’s Top 3:

  • Caroline
  • Elena
  • Elijah

You definitely are not the only one who loves both brothers. They are incomplete without each other. Damon is the ying to Stefan’s yang.

  • Anonymous

I agree Candygril9890. I didn’t see anything biased in the article on Damon at all. I wish that some people would adapt a live and let live philosophy. Especially when it comes to these types of things. Not everyone will love Damon, Stefan, Caroline, etc the most and focusing too positively and too heavily on one character in any article completely takes away from the supreme awesome of all the characters.

  • Mairead

I just don’t understand why having one favorite means you have to tear down the others.  And I don’t see why fans should turn on each other, regardless of what character they favor, or which relationship they root for.  It’s a great show we all love, we can have different REASONS for that love, and we should be able to discuss it without being mean.

Red, Vee and Crissy- I’m having fun with these polls, and the discussions.  It’s keeping the summer hiatus (slightly) bearable. :-)

  • Mairead

I can’t wait to see that featurette on the DVD, the one about Nina playing both characters.  I hope the girl is getting a little break on hiatus, cuz I hope to see BOTH her characters back next season!

  • Mairead

    Does that make Damon, Alice?

  • Candygirl9890

    Preach sista!!! :)

Whoever thought that these polls were rigged -just because Damon won, most probably doesn’t know the TVD (online) fandom.
Because it’s become common knowledge that Damon Salvatore is destined to win every single poll he’s in, no matter what.
Hence why I admit, I didn’t vote in this poll, because the result was anything but unpredictable.

Anyway, as far as I’m concerned, Damon didn’t deserve to be in the top3, and even less to be the #1. He spent most of the season whining and screwing things up instead of working with the group. But Damon is Damon, ergo he wins. This isn’t new! ;)
And let me point out that Stefan would NOT make it into my Top3 either.
Shocking coming from a huge fan of Stefan like me? Maybe. Objective? Surely.

Now with that being said, here’s my top-3:

    1) Caroline
    2) Elijah
    3) Klaus

PS: thanks Chrissy for your honorable mention dedicated to Stefan. The younger Salvatore brother rarely (and unfairly, imho) gets any recognition, so it was really nice to read your thoughts about him, thoughts that I totally agree about ;)

  • http://twitter.com/LacySOS Phyllis Lacy

IMHO the writers make the MVP. According to JP in a May 13th interview, S1 and S2 were about Damon’s journey. And the last half of S2 was all about Damon’s journey. We all know that Damon gets the best funny, snarky lines. Makes him Damon!

Nina would automatically make MVP for the dual roles, and she does a great job. I never have to wonder which one is Kat. It’s amazing.

When they made Caroline a vampire KW said he wanted her to be the little vampire who could. He wanted the audience to root for her. Mission Accomplished. Hated her in S1, absolutely love and adore her in S2. I also had a change of heart about Tyler this season.

My point is the writers can make us love or hate a character. I think all of these actors are very talented and can “bring it” when the script calls for it. I’m heart broken that my Stefan didn’t make the top five, but he’ll always be #1 in my heart. And, in as much as Julie Plec says we’ll see Stefan’s journey in S3, I’m cautiously optimistic that the writers will develop his character and hopefully all of the others. They’ve certainly set up some exciting storylines for everybody in S3.

  • Jennie

The thing is that there would have been angry comments if some of the other characters led the poll, too.  That’s just the way it goes.  That was not a good reason to make such a negative writeup compared to the other 5 writeups. The tone of the Damon write up is, “well he won overwhelmingly, but I don’t agree with it.”  IMO that is disrespectful to all the fans that voted for him.  That being said, I do want to add that I do appreciate all the time spent with the site and enjoy the site very much.

  • Sonia

@Jennie It’s not just the “controversial” comment, which was completely unnecessary. Why print good things fans said about him but qualify it with “we don’t agree”, or diss him for “wallowing”, or poke at shippers with the Bonnie comment? It’s all so out of place. Is it so hard to just say a few nice words about the character and let it go at that? I don’t see the snarkiness in the other character descriptions. When I first read it, I thought I was being too sensitive. Glad to know I’m not alone in my opinion.

  • Sarah

The poll was not biased. Given the amount of the emotional scenes Ian had to seell to us for Damon, he deserves the number one spot. Why is a poll biased if the person who has the most fans win ….. helloooo there is a reason that Damon has the most goddamn fans . jeesh

  • Anonymous

Trust me Sonia… you are NOT alone and I agree with what you said.

The snarky remark was way out of line,  disrespectful and insulting to the fans that visit this website.  Damon won with 63% of the vote and 4,394 fans voted for him.  How is that controversial?

I can guarantee this poll was not rigged in Damon’s favor…not on this website.. A conspiracy in Damon’s favor?  Seriously?  Don’t make me laugh!

Yes, the poll was all in fun regarding a favorite TV show, but with this type of bias against the character that won from the website administrator that posted the poll, what was fun just became no fun.
    Not cool…Not cool at all.

  • Anonymous

The poll was not bias at all.  Damon absolutely deserved to win.  (Ian truly deserves an Emmy)  He won with 63% of the vote, which makes him the clear winner.  No other character even came close to him.  I see no room for controversy there.

However, the snarky remarks regarding his win shows bias against the character.  Why qualify it with “we don’t agree”.   Like @Sonia:twitter said, why not just say a few nice words about the character and let it go at that, which is what the other characters received.   The write up came across negatively and insulting to the fans that voted for him.

  • Soll

Quote “The overwhelming (but somewhat controversial) winner of the Season 2 MVP
poll moves us to quote those who so ferociously defended their favorite
    in the comments.”

I think its this line that fans have objected to  – whats controversial about 60% of the votes ?

Anyway for me the top 5 are the right characters but I’d have had it Damon, Catherine, Elijah personally – why Damon ? – because when I look back at series 2 he features in many of the pivotal and most memorable scenes for me.  Rose dream scene,  Elijah double heart grabbing, Masquerade fight scene, Saving Caroline and Tyler etc

  • Mick

But you shouldn’t forget that Damon alone would be nothing. He didn’t drive the storylines on his own. Without all the other characters he wouldn’t have had all this intense emotional distress…

  • Anonymous

aww you guys quoted me :)) thanks, you made my day! :)

  • damon lover :)

    yay Damon came first :):)
    my three were damon first
    Alaric second
    klaus third
just in love with damon salvatore no other way to explain it :)

  • http://twitter.com/momina95 Momina Amjad

The votes were obviously NOT rigged. Damon had a LOT to do with season 2, over and above his emotional journey, he saved Elena, Bonnie, Caroline, Tyler etc. I don’t have to justify his win anymore. And he was the clear winner, just like @2c742b11bef9c0c82a7214bd7b24e331:disqus and @Georgia_Peach:disqus said, 63% of the vote ain’t nothing. No other character came even close to that!

That being said, the write up for Damon was, on the other hand, very biased. I understand the fact that many people love the Salvatores as brothers and are not much interested in shipper wars (so am I , in fact) , but Damon, having won 63% of the vote, and being so integral “to season 2, deserved a much better writing than “less wallowing” and “controversial” winner. I understand we all have our own views, but at least respect the 4000 something fans who voted and “supported Damon ferociously” . I love this website and all those who contribute in the writing (BTW I LOVE THOSE RIPPING TVD OPEN POSTS!) but @red:disqus and @dieslaughing:disqus need to make this clear! :)

  • Zapp

Hmm, I don’t know how the votes are counted, but if everyone voted for 3 characters then no character should be able to get more than 1/3 of the votes. How did Damon get over 60%? Maybe some people voted only for him.

Anyway, I voted for Damon, Caroline and Elena. Most story lines revolved around them this season.

  • Sonia

    @Georgia_Peach

By controversial, apparently they mean some people left comments saying they didn’t think Damon should be #1. DUH!!! 37% didn’t vote for him and of course they disagree with the outcome. Honestly, that’s not my definition of controversial. Every election with a winner has people who bitch about it because their guy didn’t win. That’s not controversial. That’s called sour grapes ;)

  • http://twitter.com/Dayna_Barter Dayna Barter

It WAS “controversial,” though.  If you read through the comments for the post announcing the poll, there were a lot of people arguing that Damon didn’t deserve it based on earlier comments by people who chose him.  That was the controversy right there.  It had nothing to do with vote totals.

Fact is, this is not the mainstream (and non-FOX) news.  There is no guarantee of non-bias here.  The site administrators are allowed their own opinions.  We all expressed ours with our votes; they get to express theirs.

Dear TVD family, calm down, why should our two administrators bias polls or characters or  be disrespectful. There is no better TVD website in the whole www – as far as I know – and Red and Vee do a brilliant job with this site. They serve me so many hours of relaxation and fun every week.
They may have their own opinion as well as we all do and I didn´t read the text snarky or insulting. Ian himself said in an interview that he wished he could be a bit more of his old vampy self again. So, please, don´t fight about receptions of words but continue to have fun and survive a much tooooo long summer hiatus. ;)

  • http://twitter.com/momina95 Momina Amjad

well, um no. Since we are talking Mathematics stuff here, Damon could win more than 1/3- because all the people that voted for Damon also voted for 2 other different people, and those 2 other people might be different for every voter. Um, I probably don’t make sense but yeah.. *long story*

  • Samantha

Can we just take a minute and talk about how incredibly HOT Stefan looks in this picture??? Lordy, lordy.
Oh, and my top 3 was Caroline, Katherine, and Elijah.

  • Emma

“Settle down, ‘shippers – we just like those two (non-romantically) sparking off each other in the spirit of Getting It Done. More, please!”

I agree with what you say, but what’s wrong with them ROMANTICALLY sparking off each other? I could die happy. :) Although I don’t want them to get together romantically in season three, that’d just be way too soon, a Bonnie/Damon friendship in s3 would make me deliriously happy. And after that, who knows? <3

No, if 10 people voted no alternative could get more than 10 votes out of 30 regardless of which other alternatives people voted for. However, I guess that system wasn’t used in this poll, they probably just presented the percentage of people who voted for each character. So I was wrong anyway =).

  • John

The poll should be for next season besides Damon who was the MVP?lol But I voted Caroline, Damon and Elijah. As much as love Elena she was much more of an mvp in season 1 then in season 2. She made two many mistakes in leading to the deaths of Jules, Jenna and John. If she would of went with Damons plan by using Bonnie to kill Klaus. Then you of had one death rather then two. It was like she wasn’t thinking if she went with Elijahs plan who were going to be the two people sacrificed before her and then to have the guy you took the dagger out of turn on you. And not once did I hear Elena tell Damon that he was right not to trust Elijah and that his original plan was better.

  • Anonymous

Been awhile since I’ve posted GP, hope all is well with you:)

I completely agree with what you’ve said above. Personally, after reading certain tweets from certain people, the above sentiment regarding the clear winner of the poll didn’t surprise me much. What was written was a bit disappointing but frankly I expected it.

Still very pleased to note which character was voted as the MVP…the why’s are obvious, and the fact that Damon won with over half the vote is very well deserved:) Just lays it out there where the sentiments of the majority of the the loyal fans of TVD lay:)

  • noirgirl

LOL!!  Actually, I tried to vote for Elijah three times, but it wouldn’t let me, so I ended up just voting once….for Elijah, of course.  : )

  • Anon

I cannot understand how the administrators of VD.net can say such great things about Stefan and that as ‘honorable’ mention and nothing but negative things about Damon who won MVP? I always thought they were neutral in all this shipper and character wars but this just proved that they NOT Team Salvatore as they claim… one just has to see their tweets and friends to know they dislike Ian and therefore Damon.

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/ Red

If you’re getting the impression we don’t like Ian or Damon, then you’re reading things into our tweets. It’s simply not the case. Neither of us have made any kind of disparaging remarks about cast members on our Twitter accounts because we find them to be a fantastic group of people, and that INCLUDES Ian Somerhalder. And while we may get frustrated with some of the things Damon does on the show, we also find him to be a fantastic character BECAUSE of the spanners he can throw in the works, and the way he makes things unpredictable. And we genuinely are Team Salvatore, because it seriously is all about the crazy relationship between Stefan and Damon for us. THAT is the story we’re interested in.

Our reason for being very hesitant throughout this whole thing is that it was becoming apparent that many people think that Damon fans were voting for their favourite character rather than putting their thinking caps on, so naturally Damon won (hell, if it was favourite character, I’d have voted Matt, but he clearly was not an MVP this season, so I didn’t). THAT is the reason we used the word controversial. Simple. The writeup? Sad as it is to admit, our own personal views of what an MVP is meant we didn’t feel comfortable trying to do a writeup on that. So we thought that the best thing to do was quote the fans on the matter, assuming that people might actually like the fact that we read the comments to see what fans had to say.

We thought the fans would be fairer than us in this regard. That’s it. That writeup was NOT negative, unless you think the fans that were quoted were being negative, which is utterly ridiculous, and if I were them I’d be offended at the very suggestion.

This was a poll for a bit of fun, and certain fans have blown it all ridiculously out of proportion. There are better things to spend time on than getting worked up over a silly poll result. Especially given that we’re fans, just like everyone else, running this site on our own time and dime, and also have a right to feelings of our own.

Now, for the love of all that is holy, can we please just move along.

  • http://www.vampire-diaries.net/ Red

Oh, and you know what? Before anyone starts in and claims I’m anti-DE, I LOVED that Damon and Elena kiss at the end of As I Lay Dying. THAT is the start to their relationship that I have been waiting two seasons for, and I’m looking forward to seeing just where it goes next season, just as much as I’m looking forward to seeing how Elena and Stefan might overcome what happens between him and Klaus.

I’m in this to see how the story develops, not to fixate on one relationship for all time. I want to see new relationships and friendships built. I want to be entertained. I don’t care if Elena ends up with Stefan, Damon, both or neither. I just want to be taken on a journey that keeps me engaged.

  • nat

this season was basically Damon’s Diaries…youve got plenty of Damon-lovin to last you during the hiatus. not everyone think he’s the god of the show. get over it.

To Red and Vee:   You qualified things by using negative wording like “controversial” and ”a lot less wallowing” and also that you didn’t really agree with the quotes.  ANYBODY who won would have gotten a lot of negative reactions from fans. ELena would have caused havoc, and I don’t even want to think what would have happened if Stefan would have won.  Winning by a landslide is not controversial.  That’s like saying Reagan’s win in 1984 was controversial.   If you had written mixed reviews about the other 5 characters as well as Damon, it would not have seemed so biased.  The fact that you wrote very positive reviews for the other 5 characters and only one mixed review for the one that happened to win by a landslide shows bias.  I appreciate the work you do on this site and enjoy it very much, but I was very disappointed in the lack of objectivity with these writeups.
