We know, we know. We’re super-late getting the Season 3 retrospective polls started this year. Here’s our first step in remedying this egregious mistake! We asked our readers to vote for their top episodes of The Vampire Diaries Season 3, and you have spoken! (And may Season 4 rock.)

Top 5 episodes of Vampire Diaries Season 3, as voted by Vampire-Diaries.net readers:

#5: Before Sunset (EP321)
Crissy: With one of the most powerful cold opens of the season, Before Sunset kicks off in high gear and doesn’t let up, with not one but two villains terrorizing Mystic Falls. From Klaus’s hilarious attack on the Gilbert house to Alaric’s utter coolness as a purely evil super vamp stuck in a high school, the episode is all high stakes and fun (except that bit where Caroline is tortured and Elena nearly dies and Jer too…). After some shaky mythology moments earlier in the season, we get the payoff here in one of those great TVD oh-no-they-didn’t twists: Alaric’s vampire life is tied to Elena’s human life; she dies, he dies. Not only does that connection set up the tear-jerking end sequence of The Departed, it forces Klaus into a corner, where his need for a backup hybrid family finally becomes his downfall. Joseph Morgan is at the top of his game here; the episode is a showcase for the nuance he’s brought to his character (“Just between us girls…”) and the energy he’s injected to the season as a whole. Before Sunset also delivers an important lesson to us all: when you’re drained of blood and suffering from a head injury, just say no to tequila shots.

#4: Dangerous Liaisons (EP314)
Abby: Fancy dresses! Tuxedos! Dancing! PONIES, for the love of bourbon! Between the costumes and the mansion, this was one of the most visually appealing episodes of Season 3, and let’s face it: we love it when they dance. Nevermind how the whole town knows the steps, we don’t care! This was also a great music episode, with Ed Sheeran’s “Give Me Love” used to particularly good effect. Even without all the pretty, however, this episode had an awful lot going on, from people getting pitched off balconies to magically spiked champagne. The Elena, Stefan and Damon dynamics were complicated and conflicted, culminating in Damon’s bitter exit from the ball and subsequent steamy hook-up with Rebekah. Team Elijah spent most of the hour yelling “DON’T YOU DARE!” at different people, but we’re pretty sure it was Team Klaroline that pushed this episode into the top 5. Dancing and ponies…gets us every time.

#3: The Reckoning (EP305)
Vee: As Vampire Diaries fans, we are accustomed to the insane plot twists and emotional sucker punches this show doles out like crayons in a Kindergarten class (so we can slam-scribble out our feelings, natch). But, once in a while, even fan expectations are absolutely murdered by an episode so tight, tense, and shocking that the hour becomes less an episode than an event. Much like last season’s excellent Masquerade (EP207), The Reckoning brought nearly all of the major players to Mystic Falls High for one Very Bad Night with one Very Pissed Off Hybrid. Decisions were made (MATT WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!), fates were changed (Tyler, nooooooo…!), people were killed (R.I.P. Not Now Dana), relationships irrevocably altered, a switch was flipped – and all under a Klaus-imposed time limit. If you emerged from the other side of this hour without PTSD, you’re made of stronger stuff than the rest of us.

#2: Heart of Darkness (EP319)
Kate: Road trip episodes are always exciting, and this one was no exception. Everyone spent the episode exploring and trying to control different aspects of themselves, which led to all sorts of interesting dynamics and power struggles. Stefan and Alaric must both accept their dark sides as parts of themselves in order to find the white oak stake – and Klaus admits that he really just wants his friend Ripper Stefan back. Aww. He’s pretty adorable, for a terrifying monster. Meanwhile, Damon and Elena set off to retrieve Jeremy from Denver and Kol’s clutches, and to use Jeremy’s ghosty powers to touch base with Rose about who she’s shipping find out who turned Rose. And Tyler also makes his long-awaited return – possibly having broken his sire bond – only to find that his sire is trying to steal his girl. (See above about PONIES.) Also, did we mention the kissing? THERE WAS KISSING. After almost three seasons of tension-building, it would have been all too easy for Damon and Elena’s big moment to go awry or feel anticlimactic, but their perfectly-choreographed motel scene combined real emotional connection with physical chemistry for a big-time dramatic payoff.

#1: The Departed (EP322)
Red: Vampire Diaries finales now have a solid reputation for delivering twists and turns and leaving us with game-changing cliffhangers that have fans jittering all Summer long as they speculate what’s in store for the next season. The Departed does not disappoint, delivering an episode full of the unexpected. Klaus burning in his coffin, only to hop bodies into Tyler with the help of Bonnie (and that’s one slippery slope to the dark side you’re on there, Ms Bennett); Damon being the first of the brothers to meet Elena, surprising us with compassion that no one would have expected from the Damon of Season 1; Jeremy and Matt getting pro-active with protecting Elena’s life and getting her out of town; Carol and Liz defying the council and everything it stands for because the welfare of their own children is more important. Ultimately, this episode was about death and rebirth, endings and beginnings in the face of adversity and heartbreak. We say goodbye to Alaric as he’s finally able to move on, only for Jeremy to realise that this means his sister is dead. We see the end of Elena’s old life with the death of her parents, to the end of her human life as she drowns (a perfect nod to book fans – Wickery Bridge! Matt’s truck! Elena drowning!)… and then the beginning of something new and terrifying as her eyes snap open and we realise that nothing can be the same again.

V-D.net Staff Honorable Mention: The End of the Affair (EP303)
Abby: Among the prettiest of the flashback episodes, this episode is popular for many of the same reasons as Dangerous Liaisons (dancing! tuxedos!), but it has an entirely different tone. The End Of The Affair reveals the true nature of Klaus and Sefan’s relationship, something Stefan himself was unaware of until this point. With the revelation of their past friendship, Klaus’s motivations and actions are thrown into an entirely different light, and for the first time we see Ripper Stefan as more than just a wild-eyed monster. He formed intense relationships with people, and was even capable of romance. With some very tense and emotional scenes, this episode jerked fans up, down and sideways, and did a lot of emotional damage to all the characters involved. The End of the Affair also adds Original #3 to the mix, in the form of Rebekah, and gives us our first glimpse of Mikael. Wrapped in a bright, glitzy package, this episode is actually very dark and complicated, serving to set up the rest of the season. With its nicely balanced mix of humor and horror, The End Of The Affair won a lot of points with fans.

How about the fact that it was the first time in over a season that Stefan and Elena had kissed? “The Departed” was so emotionally overwhelming. It made me cry so much which is why I loved it. You also failed to mention Paul Wesley’s flawless performance this year, particularly in “The Reckoning” the whole scene with Klaus and Elena gives me chills.

  • AbbyGraham

If there’s one thing we don’t need to tell you guys, it’s how great Paul and Ian’s performances are. Particularly since no matter what we say about either, someone thinks we “failed” to sufficiently praise the other. Everyone’s seen the episodes and each fan is entitled to his or her own favorite scenes and moments. Including us.

    My top 5
    - The Birthday (301)
    - The End of the Affair (303)
    - The Reckoning (305)
    - Dangerous Liaisons (314)
    - Before Sunset (321)

    Honorable mention:
The Murder Of One (318) which delivered one of the most shocking revelations of the season, imho: if one original die, everyone coming from the same bloodline dies as well.

PS: At first I was suprised to see Heart Of Darkness so high on the list. But then I considered it from a “shipping” point of view only, and it all makes sense now…

  • katherine_fan

The scene in “The Reckoning” gives me chills everytime I watch it!From the moment Stefan begged Elena to run and then he tried to fight the compulsion by staking himself to the moment when Klaus compelled him to turn his emotions off and we saw the change on Stefan’s face (and in his soul),the whole sequence is perfection!Paul Wesley and Matt Davis were the best in season 3!

  • lola.rose17

before sunset is my favourite especially the scene where stefan ends klaus, the reckoning (stefan, elena and klaus).as for the other 18 episodes its good good, favourite particular scenes .as for ep 19 and 22,well for me heart of darkness was executed by the departed(burned on the stake),i remember when i watched it ,cried, didn’t watch again and never will.
every time i remember (the departed )i remember damon and elena and the song (show me the meaning of being lonely by back street boys)…………………
well goodnight ,its past midnight in uk
wish you all the best with season 4

  • http://twitter.com/juliajewels juliajewels

    My vote for top five.
The Birthday- for the phone call scene between Stefan and Elena.
The End of the Affiar- for the background on Stefan and Klaus
The Reckoning- For the compulsion scene.
Dangerous Liaisons- for reuniting the Originals.
The Departed- For Stefan and Elena’s reunion, and the last 10 minutes on Elena’s sacrifice and death.

Honorable mention 1912- for a rare and strong Stefan and Damon episode.

I would add with all the praise of everything Damon in these summaries, the lack of anything Stefan comes across as a little bias. Don’t be afraid to give Paul/Stefan his due, he’s earned it this season.

  • Laura

Great job what an awesome write up! I have to agree with the majority of this list! Except I’d replace 3×21 and 3×14 with either Our Town, Ordinary People and possibly Homecoming. Totally underrated episodes imo LOL. I don’t get the negativity that’s going on tbh Paul Wesley did a great job but so did Ian they all did great this season! And writers don’t feel bad about the Damon&Elena blurb that was a series wide HUGE moment in the triangle it deserves some praise as well! Thanks guys again for sharing really enjoyable read<3

  • night magic

any episode before ep 12 was good .After that elenas eye rolling and anger toward Damon who has been there right by her side ruined it for me

.really Liked TVD: SeAson 3!. so many twists that you would not expect. the best part is where Elena is torn between Her Love For STEFAN and DAMON. <3 it!. i am excited

  • Kego

Agree! And we all know how notable/noteworthy Paul Wesley´s acting is,especially in S3.

    1. The Reckoning (E5)2. The New Deal (E10)
    3. The Hybrid (E2)
    4. The New Deal (E10)
    5. Homecoming (E9)

My favorite show made #3, I guess that is not bad.

  • ihatepeople

I hear you. I won’t rewatch the last ep either. It negates too many previous things for me.

3×14 ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ is 4th?  Really? I hated it.  I mean, the dancing and the Klaroline moments were nice – and I enjoyed the bit when Damon threw Kol off the balcony – but I was a wreck after I saw it.  For all the wrong reasons, I might add.

Elena: “Whoo-hoo!  An invitation from Mama Original to a party!  Even though her son Klaus tried to use me as a human blood bank and sacrificed me and Jenna in a ring of fire, I see no reason why I shouldn’t accept, even if danger does stalk me at every turn!  And even though my ex-boyfriend recently pretended to drive me off the bridge where my parents died in his fiendish scheme to get the upper hand over the Dark Lord, he has totally earned my forgiveness.  In fact, I can hardly even remember it happened.  He’s going to knock Damon unconscious for a while just so I can meet Mama Original!  Yay Stefan!  Oh, and to top things off, I am so going to put my foot in it when Damon tells me he loves me!  Is that a problem?”

Seriously, I HATED IT.  It was like the writers brains had been taken over by a horde of aliens in some parts – there was just no accounting for the way some characters behaved.  I’m going to assume that the only reason  why it’s in the top 5 is for the Klaroline scenes and the Stelena porch scene.  I can’t think of anything else.

  • a_softsong

The show went downhill after E10.  This is a good show it just needs to get it’s order back. Start paying attention to details and the mythology again.

TVD lost all of that after episode 10.  It became scattered and went for audience approval and ratings.

Tell me a good story.  Have it remain true to its premise.  Keep the mythology tight and don’t defer.  Take me along for the ride.  I might disagree from time to time but make it believable.  Shock me with the depth of the character whether good or bad.  These are the things that made TVD great.

This is what I really miss about this show.

I don’t need to see a character get demeaned and degraded time and time again.  I don’t need to see a character portrayed as being dumb as a box of rocks time and time again.  I don’t need to see each and every bad ass turned into a teary eyed sap, time and time again.

I do need clarity and focus.  The writers should be clear where we are heading and that should be the focus.  Each episode in season 1 and 2 built upon the previous episode.  It would get us at least on step closer to finding out what was going to be the end result.  It had mystery and drama.  From day 1 season 1 all of the events lead up to Klaus becoming a hybrid.  I loved the ride.

Now things seem muddled and unfocused since the 2nd half of season 3.  I am looking forward to season 4 because I am still excited about this show stemming from seasons 1 and 2.  I hope the show gets it’s mojo back and I am looking forward to the ride.

  • Sasha

Hahahaha “taken over by a horde of aliens.” I agree. “Dangerous Liaisons” was not their best outing. I’m surprised “Our Town” wasn’t in the mix.  It’s a lot of the cite writers’ top picks, and mine too.  And “The End of the Affair” was chosen by TVD as their Emmy submission, so that was obviously a strong episode. Like Abby mentioned, it gave us Rebekah and a great moment of compulsion where Klaus tells Stefan to remember their true first encounter. I thought the season started off strong up to and including “Our Town” and kind of lost steam, got revitalized by “Heart of Darkness” and you know, BAM, Elena is a vampire.

  • VAMPLOVER1973

My top 5 for season 3:

    1. The Reckoning. Joseph’s acting was spot on in this one, loved the
“Turn. It. Off. Scene”…also loved the whole Office & A  Gentleman
thing going on with Damon & Elena.

    2. Heart of Darkness: I’ve waited just about 3 years for a Delena kiss like that, and boy did those two live up to the hype.

    3. Ordinary People: Loved finding out more about The Original Family,
loved the Salvatore “bonding” time, and loved the talk Damon & Elena
had at the end of this episode:)

    4. Affair to Remember: I loved this flashback…the clothes, the style,
the speak easy….yeah, this one was a keeper. I really enjoyed seeing
Stefan as a “true ripper” in 1920′s Chicago. I loved being introduced to
the awesome Rebekah. I loved Klaus standing up just as calm as you
please when the bullets started flying.

    5. Our Town: This one had the first Klaus/Caroline scene, and boy was it
memorable. I chose this one just because of that scene;)

My honorable mentions: The first half of Before Sunset…I hated the
last half, but the first half was pretty awesome….and I have to give
one to 1912. Although this episode was advertised as a “Damon centric”
flashback, and what we got was “Stefan centric”, I still enjoyed it. I
thought Paul did a great job playing the vampire coming down off a human
blood high. I still remember his jitters. I loved the way Rebekah and
Damon were working with each other for Stefan’s benefit, and I loved the
scene between Damon & Stefan when Damon told Stefan he could count
on him to be there to help him. One more honorable mention goes to The
Hybrid and one scene: Ahhhhhh…splash! Yep, the one where Damon pushed
Elena in the lake because he thought she was being a dumbass. Good lord
knows I’ve wanted to push her in the lake a time or two myself;)

Least favorite episode: The Departed….which is weird because it’s no. 1
here.  I can’t help it, I figured Elena would turn, and frankly I’m
kinda glad the writers finally pulled that trigger, but the way in which
it was done still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Watching Stefan swim
away to leave the girl he loves at the bottom of the lake to
drown…..let’s just say that I really hated the fact that Paul actually
had to act that scene out. Everytime I think about it, I cringe for
him;)….but on a positive note, the new season starts up in October and
we get a whole new season to debate about.

  • VAMPLOVER1973

I personally hated Dangerous Liaisons, but I did like the
Klaus/Caroline interaction & Damon throwing Kohl off the balcony and
pretty much telling everyone to “F” off. As a matter of fact, I pretty
much felt the same way Damon did after watching that episode;)

  • From Beginning To End

Heart of Darkness was all around a very solid episode in my opinion, and not just from a shipping perspective. I did really like the DE scene (which was really well done) but I also liked

    -seeing Jeremy again
-When Stefan stood up to Klaus at the end and said he could kill him but couldn’t control him anymore.
    -Wonderful performance by Matt Davis
-Rebekah getting to feel like a teenager and her talk with Matt in his truck (even though it was tragically ruined by her nasty mother…)

I just think the episode in general had a lot more structure than some of the other episodes in season 3 did. But I also loved the Reckoning and Before Sunset.

  • From Beginning To End

I thought that episode was going to be so good so when I had to work on that Thursday night the next day instead of streaming it on CTV like usual I went and purchased it on Itunes. It was only like $3 but since I’ve never felt like rewatching it and I could’ve watched it free it irritates me even now.

  • VAMPLOVER1973

Ha! I failed to mention Bringing Out the Dead- very solid episode, with some great scenes. Thanks for reminding me about the dinner party with Damon, Stefan, Elijah & Klaus…the snark going around the dinner table in itself made that episode a classic;)

  • VAMPLOVER1973

Yeah- I can see why you’d be a bit irritated. The episode definitely didn’t live up to it’s potential. The thing I liked most about the ball were the ball gowns & tuxes, but even the clothing didn’t bring this one out of the dunker for me:(

  • From Beginning To End

I had to go back and read through them a second time to be sure I hadn’t just missed it, but I don’t really see praise of everything Damon. I actually found this very unbiased…

Paul was really great this season, I think everyone can pretty much agree. I just think that the top 5 episodes picked from the poll aren’t necessarily his best ones or I am sure there would’ve been more praise.

  • midnight

I thought I was going to love ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ but it might top my personal list of least favourite episodes ever.  I liked seeing everyone dressed up, the dancing was nice and after that it was all downhill from there.  I like Elena, but I was not impressed with the way she conducted herself in this episode.  She acted as if half her brain had been sucked out of her ears.  “To complete my ‘Elena’s lost her marbles’ transition, right after I reject Damon’s admission of love in the worst way possible, I’m going to do my level best to make Stefan admit that he still has feelings for me by pressing myself up against him in a ‘come hither’ way and hope he gets the message; thereby earning a place on TV’s ‘Bitch of The Year’ list!  What a little minx I am!”
I mean, what was Julie Plec thinking of?
I agree that the second half of S3 lost momentum for the most part due to the ‘Fab 3′ kind of floundering around and waiting for someone to make a decision.   OK, I know that some time must be spent in working feelings out, but that was the thing about the second half of S3: nothing was worked out until the finale, and you can’t say that Elena’s choice was the culmination of where the season had been leading up to because it so wasn’t.  I don’t want the writers to rush things too much in S4, but I don’t want them to make the mistake of taking things too slowly either.  There’s a happy medium somewhere.

  • Rina

For the most part I didn’t like season 3, but if I had to choose my fave episode, it would be Before Sunset. I liked it because as a Bonnie fan, my girl had more than 5 minutes if screen time and the Scooby Gang were able to finally do SOMETHING right, by finally dedicating Klaus!

  • a_softsong

Hi Abbey, I am getting posts from other peoples conversations that is not directed to me.  Is there anything that can be done?

  • http://twitter.com/TheOriginalsTVD Rebekah Mikealson

    5) The Reckoning- The DE scene at the end
    4) Homecoming- The whole Klaus and Mikael fight
    3) Dangerous Liaisons- Getting to know the Original Family
    2) Before Sunset- Klaus vs. Damon and the Klaroline moment
    1) Heart of Darkness- Obviously DE, but because of Mebekah, Stefan finally standing up to Klaus, and the whole Ester/Rebekah twist

  • AbbyGraham

I don’t have a fix off the top of my head, but we’ll look into it. It’s probably related to the disqus upgrade.

I kind of agree with you on 3×22.   Aside from 3×19, I’m really not sure what my top 5 episodes are, but I can safely state that 3×22 wouldn’t be among them.  I’m very surprised that it’s number one, because I don’t know if it was what anyone was expecting.  OK, Elena turning into a vampire at the end: that was a plot twist that I didn’t see coming, but apart from that?  I don’t know why it’s No. 1 and quite frankly, I’m not sure if it deserves to be.  Was it because of the SE kiss?  I thought 3×22 was utter pants for Stelena, and I say that as a writer and not as a DE shipper.  Not just because Stefan didn’t save Elena even when he had the chance and obviously wanted to, but because 3×22 had the potential to be epic for SE and it wasn’t.  The were 2 key scenes that had ‘Epic Stelena’ written all over them, but they weren’t in the episode even though they could have been, and probably should have.  (Again, I’m saying this as a writer and not as someone who ships them).  One: Elena never tells Stefan she’s chosen him or makes any kind of romantic declaration to his face.  She could easily have told him after he kisses her, but she doesn’t.  Strange, no?  Two: we never see Stefan carrying Elena out of the lake, laying her on the shore and the look of devastation on his face when he realised the girl he loved was dead.  Now THERE’S an epic scene for SE if ever there was one.  But once again, it’s not there.  Why not?  TVD has proved it does tragic scenes well, it would have been an absolute gem of a scene, and it seems very very odd that TPTB didn’t put it in the episode.  If fans voted for 3×22 for SE alone, then I have no idea why.  They got the lamest send off ever.  On the whole, I just thought 3×22 was incredibly sad, and it won’t be an episode I will be in a hurry to re-watch.
