It’s the question fans have been asking more than any other, regardless of how they feel about the other changes in the pilot script: Where is Meredith Sulez?
No, you’re not confused – Meredith does not seem to be part of the Vampire Diaries TV series, or at the very least she is not part of the pilot. Instead we have Caroline (Candice Accola) sliding into Meredith’s BFF spot with the promise of book-like conflict between her and Elena (Nina Dobrev) later on down the road. (Or so it appears – we’re trying not to assume anything at this point.)
We don’t know why Meredith has not been included in the pilot. Some fans speculate the elusive nature of her character proved difficult to adapt to the screen. Others think she was sacrificed for the sake of Caroline’s expanded storyline. And still others believe that Jenna Moyer (Sara Canning), Elena’s new grad student aunt, will be fulfilling “voice of reason” duties.
Or a bit of Meredith has been transferred to Elena (and, no, we’re not talking about the hair) and to Bonnie (Katerina Graham). As far as we can tell from the casting descriptions and the script itself, the Elena Gilbert of the pilot is not the selfish, so-called “golden girl” of The Awakening, nor is TV Bonnie (we’re not certain her last name will be McCullough) quite as flighty and overly romantic as her original trilogy counterpart. So maybe this is Meredith’s cerebral influence in action.
What remains to be seen is if the show plans to co-opt integral elements of Meredith’s family history and transfer them to another character, or if they’ll be ignored completely. As for Alaric? If the series is given the green light and manages to reach a point where his character is needed (if at all), perhaps he’ll be, uh, swapping dissertations with Jenna?
And of course there’s the possibility that the writers have something different in mind for her character and she’ll appear in some incarnation once/if the show progresses.
We don’t have any answers for you, Meredith fans, sorry. Instead we’ll just arch an elegant eyebrow in her honor and wait to see what happens.
