We’ve blogged a lot of cast interviews over the past few months, but we couldn’t help but notice that we had yet to hear from one person: Michael Trevino, aka Tyler Lockwood, aka @M_Trevino, aka the subject of possibly my favorite Julie Plec tweet ever. So last night we asked Michael if he’d want to field a few questions from fans via Twitter to fill this unfortunate void in premium Tyler Time, and he not only obliged, he went above and beyond. Thanks to fans who sent questions our way and thanks to Michael for being so awesome. I almost feel bad about throwing in the Waffle House question. Almost.
What do you find special about The Vampire Diaries?
What makes Vampire Diaries so special is that we’re going to be able to bring you drama, romance, suspense, sex, drugs, murder, and suspicion every week. Even better, you don’t have to have cable to watch us on the regular. (Wink, wink.)
What made you want to audition for Tyler?
I went out for Stefan and Damon early on in the audition process. Finally, in the end, I think the bad boy image I brought to Tyler won over Kevin and Julie. Tyler has been both a fun and interesting character to play thus far.
You mentioned Tyler being very rich. Does he flaunt it? Do you get the benefit of driving any cool vehicles on set?
Tyler doesn’t actually flaunt his wealth, but you can tell just from the way he dresses compared to, say, Matt or Jeremy, that he comes from a very wealthy family. He knows he’s the richest kid in Mystic Falls, he knows his father is a powerful man, and he uses this – among other things – to his advantage. I haven’t yet driven any fancy/expensive cars, but I have seen the house (MANSION) that Tyler lives in. IT’S RIDICULOUSLY HUGE!!!!
Is there anything about Tyler that you feel you can relate to?
I really hope I don’t relate to Tyler at all, he’s such an ass! Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to play the bully, but this guy is just out of his mind and out of control. HE HAS NO LIMITS! I did play football throughout high school though, so that’s probably all we have in common.
We know you’ve had a chance to film a fight scene – do you enjoy those?
Fight scenes are no joke! Having to choreograph the whole piece is very precise, one wrong move and someone’s getting a black eye. Let’s just say Mr. McQueen and I look forward to our next “altercation.” You guys let me know what you think after the third episode. :)
Are you ready for a rabid, built-in fanbase to love to hate you every week?
Of course! If you’re not frowning every time you see Tyler show up then maybe! Tyler is a handful and I don’t see him calming down any time soon, but hey – Ian can’t be the only villain on this show…right?
Do you enjoying living and filming in Atlanta?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles so this is my first time having to actually relocate all of my belongings across the country. It’s been a fun ride thus far – the people here in Georgia have to be the nicest people I’ve ever come across. As far as filming goes, we have the greatest crew that works their asses off day in and day out, away from their families, just to put out quality work for you guys to see. The locals in the cities of Covington and Monroe have been gracious enough for us to take over certain areas and create Mystic Falls. It’s been a blast.
Have you been getting recognized?
Haven’t really been getting recognized around Atlanta yet… But that’s a good thing, right? Let’s see what happens after 9-10-09…
You recently participated in a kick-off “Starve a Vampire” blood drive in Atlanta – how was that experience?
Funny you ask about the blood drive. I just spoke with a rep today from the local CW affiliate out here in Atlanta, and he told me they had a record turnout of people giving blood when we were at Georgia Tech. (Even more than when they did a blood drive for Katrina.) So to all that came out in support of the Red Cross, THANK YOU!!!
Very important: What’s the best 3 a.m. meal to order at Waffle House?
My personal favorite late night dish from Waffle House between the hours of 2 a.m.-6 a.m. would have to be “The Grilled Bacon Texas Cheesesteak Melt” with jalapeños and cheese in the hashbrowns and a waffle on the side! Okay, I can’t believe I answered that question… I’m embarrassed…

Ok, he won me over just as my doubts were creeping back up about the series.

I am VERY glad that the only thing that has apparently changed about Tyler is his last name. I really am glad. :D
