Ian Somerhalder as DamonWe don’t seem to have a title for the December 6th episode yet, but according to Entertainment Weekly, it will include flashbacks to the Salvatore brothers dressed as both soldiers and civilians around the time of World War II – and
Lexi
in the 1940s as well. Love flashbacks

• Kiki

LEXIIIIIIIII!!!!!

• shila1307

I really love all the flashbacks, it’s almost like period drama within The Vampire Diaries. And the 40′s are part of my fav movie era, all that elegance and film noir etc. This is really good!

• Georgia_Peach

Wow!  Damon looks “sexy hot” in that uniform.   There is just something about a guy in uniform, or a suit, or a tuxedo, or a leather jacket, or …… shirtless. ;)

• Marina

Lexi is coming back!!!!!!!!!!! my favorite friendship will be back on my screen <3

• Phoenix

Wow…so handsome! So we’ve got the Salvatore brothers in uniform AND Lexi all in one episode that just so happens to be a flashback special?! Can’t wait!

• lolalovestvd

I wonder what this flashback is about???? I like the idea of getting more background on the brothers – especially Damon since he’s such a mystery. Too bad Lexi’s in it. :(

• midnight

This sounds like a really interesting flashback episode.  But I hope it’s more about Damon this time, as we’ve learned a lot about Stefan’s story, but hardly anything about Damon.  In S4, it’s high time the writers give us a Damon-centred flashback episode, don’t ya think?

• Balkan_Girl

This episode must be great, since we haven’t got the synopsis and the title yet. Also it is a flashback one and Lexi is in it. Man I will never be okay with killing her. :) Not saying anything bad about Damon, just grieving that she was so short on the show. :)

• Georgia_Peach

Wait!  This is episode 8, which according to Ausiello is the episode Madeline Zima will guest star as Charlotte, who is rumored to have a romantic past with Damon.  Well …. that should be fun to watch.  Hot sexy times in the 1940′s! ??

• sarah

1) The set from the picture looks AMAZING!—2) LEXI is back!!!!

• dman

“There is just something about a guy in uniform, or a suit, or a tuxedo, or a leather jacket, or …… shirtless. ;)”

Note to self, wear more of that stuff. lol

I love flashback episodes. Not only do they give important information about our characters which are often relevant to current storylines, but they’re also exciting, and really glamorous. I mean, the costumes alone are tremendous. That’s probably the best part of these flashbacks. I have to say, one of my favorite flashback episodes was The End Of The Affair. It was such a great episode. The sets, the costumes, the music, the hairstyles, were all beautifully done. I actually felt like I was transported back to that era. TVD did a tremendous job creating that episode.

The 1940′s is always a fascinating period, for a variety of reasons — namely World war II, so I’m curious if they’ll include actual battle scenes in this episode, which would be really awesome. Though I wonder if they have the budget, or even the locations for something like that. I hope so. Anyway, this episode seems really interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing it.

BTW, was it Stefan in that picture, or some other guy we don’t know about? It kinda looked like him, but then it didn’t. Could someone clarify that?

• Georgia_Peach

Hi dman, I love the flashback episodes too and thought the episode “End of the Affair” was excellent.

That is Damon in the picture.  Per the person that wrote the article and covered that episode:

      Nuzhat Naoreen ‏@NuzhatNaoreen
I think we can all agree that @iansomerhalder looks great in uniform. http://bit.ly/TZRS06  #amiright #TVD

• dman

Oh yeah, you’re right, it is him. Thanks!

ADORE FLASHBACKS!!!!!

• eve

Love flashbacks.  I thought Stefan and Damon had no contact with each other since they turned…..fast forward until today in  Mystic Falls.  It will be fun to see how they were back then.

• BlackCat92

Wow, that picture looks more like a World War 2 movie than TVD! The set looks awesome! And of course Damon is looking mighty sexy in that uniform. Can’t wait to see Stefan in his. This episode looks like it’s going to be pretty cool.

• VAMPLOVER1973

Whoop, another flashback episode! Love TVD’s flashbacks, they always do such a good job with them:)  Just have to say that Damon looks very dashing in his uniform;)

What I want to know is what does flashing back to 1940′s Louisiana have to do with the on-going story? It’s obviously going to take place during WWII, but I wonder what our Team Salvatore brothers were doing in the army? Hmmmmmm……this is going to be a good one, I just know it:)

• Kitty

I would have to agree. I feel like we barely have any of Damon’s back story. We only got a flashback once for him, but it was also used to describe what’s her name (Finns lady friend, the one that taught Damon to be all vampie). Anyways it was a great flashback but I hope this one shows MORE Damon! Either way I think I am going to love this episode!!!

• ihatepeople

Yep Daon does look super yummie in his uniform. This is supposed to be the ep where that chick named Charlotte shows up who used to be romantically involved with Damon. You know when they introduce a character like this they seem to do them first in a flashback. They did it with Bex, Klaus, Sage, etc… Maybe this chick was a double spy and filtered info to them but double crossed them? She could come back in present day with info on the 5. Just a wild idea.

• ihatepeople

Remember Stefan told Elena in season 1 that he regretted it everytime he let Damon back in his life so I think they had sporadic interactions over the century and a half since they turned. I mean we already saw them meet again after the first 50 years in the 1912 ep.

• ihatepeople

I know we barely got any back story on Damon in 1912. Given the time frame maybe there is espionage involved. LOL

• VAMPLOVER1973

Yeah- I saw that spoiler earlier today. Here’s the thing though, if she comes back present day, she’s a vampire…..could happen. The girl that’s playing her is really pretty, so, we’ll see where it goes. I know that JP has said that Damon WILL NOT BE GETTING A NEW LOVE INTEREST, so for what it’s worth, I don’t think it’s going to go anywhere.

Something else I was wondering about:
If I did my math right, this episode takes place approximately 20 years from the time Stefan was in Ripper-mode in Chicago….In 3.03, Stefan said it took him almost 30 years to get over that bender….so, what I’m getting at is why is Stefan enlisting in the army in the 40′s, when for all intents and purposes he was still trying to get over his last bender? I mean, being around all of that blood (anything having to do with war time is bloody) should have caused a problem right?  I’m a bit confused because this just doesn’t make sense to me…..

• From Beginning To End

It does look very cool. I love flashback episodes, mostly the more modern ones though. I loved, loved loved the ones from the 20′s.

• From Beginning To End

I remember that, someone mentioned ‘Charlotte’ in the comments early last year and I was like, “who’s that?” lol. They were talking about the original Petrova. I kind of like the name Charlotte better, I’m glad they’re still using it but sad that it’s for a more minor character.

• ihatepeople

I do remember her saying no new love interest for Damon but I wonder if she just comes back to cause problems in one way or another. She could be a vampire and her coming back to present day even if there is no current love interest could make little Ms. Gilbert’s green eyed monster appear even though she chose Steffie. She got upset over Bex when she wasn’t involved with Damon.

Stefan joining the army…someone else I talk to on another site reminded me that the boys could’ve been drafted and didn’t want to raise suspicion by not going. I don’t recall my history to remember if the draft was back then or only in Vietnam. With that much blood around it would be a perfect feeding ground for a vampire so that might be why he took 30 years to recover because he was exposed to so much blood. I’m not sure where Lexi ties in other than sheKs his friend. Do you remember when they were supposed to have met?

I’m curious if the boys were speaking during this time. Obviously they’re fighting on the same side.

Thanks for the trivia. I had no idea that was the original name for the first Petrova. I can see why they changed it because it seems like it’s not an old enough name to have existed 1000 years ago.

• lolalovestvd

Julie Plec said in an interview once that the mystery surrounding Damon is such a big part of his character that they don’t like to reveal too many details – instead just letting his character slowly be revealed over time.  I definitely think it’s time for something now, though, considering the direction the show seems to be taking this season. I mean, some of the early things we heard about him from Stefan have proven to be untrue, so I’m just curious about what his actual story is supposed to be.

Mostly, though, I’m just really curious to find out what the purpose of the flashback is, in relation to the plot. :D

• MissCissy

Damon and Stefan could very well have been drafted during WWII (as well as during Vietnam). However, I seriously doubt that they would have actually gone to war. Yes, it would have been a perfect feeding ground, but what if there had been too much blood and they would have vamped out in front of their comrads!? What if they had gotten hurt and would have healed in 10 secs flat!? The risk of exposure would have been way too high. I’m guessing that they either pretented to be in the army to get them off their backs or were officially in the army, but compelled their commanding officers of their respective units to kindly forget that there should be a Salvatore serving with them. In either case, they would have worn a uniform in public. However, I’m just speculating, knowing this show it probably won’t go down anything like this lol
Anyway, what I would actually be more interested in is a flashback episode of Damon’s time in the confederate army. We’ve never actually seen what it was like for him, the only thing we know is that he deserted in 1864. That was very common for confederate soldiers towards the end of the war, but the way it was portrayed back in S1 was all kinds of ridiculous. A soldier who was for all intense and purposes running for his life (desertion was punishable by death), would have not come home in a polished and clean uniform and announced with a smirk on his face that he “took a break from battle”! He would have hidden somewhere hoping not to get caught! Oh well, they could still make a pretty cool (and horrifing, sad etc.) episode out of it, but given that Damon is way to underappreciated…probably not going to happen!

• ihatepeople

I’m going to venture a guess that his past is nothing like Stefan told us. Truthfully we’ve heard it mostly from him. Damon doesn’t say much about his past nor does he correct things that are wrong with the exception of Katherone in the beginning.

In ep 13 they said we’re supposed to see this other hunter named Vaughn who knows a lot about Damon’s past. Perhaps this Charlotte chick is tied to Vaughn’s decendents and that’s how he got his info.

• lolalovestvd

Who knows?  With all the retcons and whatnot on this show, I have no expectations. It doesn’t matter.  I like Damon now, just the way he is. ;D

• ihatepeople

Me too! Since Elena can’t make up her mind we’ll take him. ;)

• ihatepeople

Hmmm that’s true they could easily compel someone so they wouldn’t have to fight even if they were legitimately serving. It seems from what we’ve been told that Damon might not have had an issue being around all that blood because he was better at controlling it.

The Civil War would’ve been interesting to see but the flashbacks we’ve had didn’t inclue him except for the brief one with Sage where we learned very little.

• nightmagic

wow i love flashbacks and Lexie is back to cant wait !

• BlackCat92

Me too, Katherine with her bob! lol and Rebekah, Klaus and Stefan looking all classy

• eve

oops my bad…LOL  I completely forgot about that.  Thanks for reminding me.

• VAMPLOVER1973

There wasn’t a draft during WWII. Not to mention, if they didn’t want to go, both could have compelled there way out of it. If they enlisted in the army, it was by choice. The draft didn’t come along until Vietnam, in the 1970′s.

• VAMPLOVER1973

They couldn’t have been drafted because the draft didn’t exist until the 1970′s…….since it seems both brothers are in the army, it’s because they want to be there….it just seemed strange that a vampire recovering from a bender would want to be in the army, during a war.

Stefan & Lexie met in 1864, a few months after Stefan turned. She was also the one who tried to help him after the events in the 1920′s in Chicago.

I wonder if Charlotte is a witch? Damon had been looking for a way to get into that tomb remember? If she’s a witch, she could have slowed down the aging process some.

• ihatepeople

Thanks for the info. I couldn’t remember when he met Lexi but now that you mentioned it I do remember her in clothing of that time in a flashback.

A witch? Hmmm that would tie in also with the present since Professor Creepy has some interesting info for him and Bonnie. Her being a witch could also tie in with the hunter. We haven’t had another witch in town since Luca and his father so we’re do.

• ihatepeople

No problem. That’s what we do here support each other’s TVD memory. LOL

• MissCissy

@VAMPLOVER1973:disqus
Actually, there was a draft. It was called the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940. After the US entered WorldWarII in 1941 it was extented. Both Salvatore brothers would have been affected by this, but yes, of course they could have compelled people to get out of it. Anyhow, I’m curious to find out how the writers end up explaining the whole army thing…We’ll just have to wait and see!

Looooooooooooove flashbacks! <3

• kellygreen17

“By the summer of 1940, as Germany conquered France, Americans supported the return of conscription. One national survey found that 67% of respondents believed that a German-Italian victory would endanger the United States, and that 71% supported “the immediate adoption of compulsory military training for all young men”. Similarly, a November 1942 survey of American high-school students found that 69% favored compulsory postwar military training…
President Roosevelt’s signing of the STSA on September 16, 1940 began the first peacetime draft in the United States…
The World War II draft operated from 1940 until 1947 when its legislative authorization expired without further extension by Congress…”
Quoted from Wikipedia so … but yah the draft did happen in WWII, though I do agree with your compulsion points :).

• kellygreen17

Oops, I guess I should have scrolled down and read your post first lol :).
