The CW has released the official synopsis for The Vampire Diaries: Man On Fire (EP519), airing Thursday, April 24th at 8/7c. Highlight for spoilers:

FLASHBACKS TO THE 1960s —
Stefan (Paul Wesley) tries to distract Elena (Nina Dobrev) from obsessing about the state of her relationship with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), while Bonnie (Kat Graham) does her best to be realistic about how the changes happening on the Other Side will affect her existence as the Anchor. Damon demands the Traveler knife, forcing Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Matt (Zach Roerig) to admit it has gone missing. Through flashbacks to election night, 1960, Enzo (guest star Michael Malarkey) reveals to Elena, Stefan and Bonnie that he has learned what happened to his long-lost love, Maggie (guest star Heather Hemmens), and then, with the unwilling help of Liv (guest star Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (guest star Chris Brochu), things take an ugly turn. Trying to calm Enzo down, Damon intervenes, but his words cause Enzo to make a desperate and dangerous decision that leads to a violent confrontation with Stefan. Finally, Markos (guest star Raffi Barsoumian) enlists Sloan’s (guest star Caitlin McHugh) help in a ritual designed to break an ancient curse against the Travelers. Tyler (Michael Trevino) is forced to play a dangerous part in the ritual, while witnessing the incredible power the Travelers now possess.
The episode was directed by Michael Allowitz and written by Melinda Hsu Taylor and Matthew D’Ambrosio.

lolololol Hi Jennifer:) I’m being blown away by how all of you are putting this together. Amazing!!
Okay, i”ll give it a try,,
When Lexi was around,, maybe she was to assist the traveler to enter Stefan, and then stuck around to see how it took, But, the traveler was able to jump in and out of him at will since Stefan has proven so susceptible to the enter & Exist of the traveler with no problems.
When Stefan and Rebekah were in the school gym,, Valentines dance? Stefan mentioned how hot Bon Jovi Music was during the 80-90′s.
If there is a traveler in him,, it is only watching not taking over,, and it could be because of the people he knows and interacts with, when he feels like it.:).
Back to Lexi – Could be that the closeness to Stefan was because the Traveler in him was someone important to her,,Like a brother.
Lexi was wary of Damon to the point of dislike. Damon asked too many questions, and that is why she didn’t want him around Stefan. She was putting things into play and Damon was an obstacle. It was easier for her to manipulate things with Damon’s strong character out of the picture.
I still think Silas knew there was a traveler inside Stefan, hated being watched so stuff ed him in the vault to be out of the way. The traveler jumped out of Stefan, before hitting the water. What if this traveler was in touch with Qetsiyah and that is how she found him. The traveler jumped into the farmer she had assist her and then jumped back into Stefan after his release from the vault.. Could be why Qetsiyah was so nice to him. Besides his resemblance to Silas, but much nicer
What if there are factions within the traveler people Good/ Bad and Lexi belonged to the good side. I hate to think of her being a bad gal:/

As of the moment I am just as interested in who these passengers are as I am in who’s got one.

One side note: I don’t think the Forbes clan qualify as a FF per se – they are of the “servant” class :-| But the Fells are also a FF – we just don’t have one of them as an active character as of the moment.

Your idea makes resonates w/ me, esp. in the case of the Gilberts & the Lockwoods and probably the Fells. I think the Salvatores are a big ?. Again, we know nothing of Mama’s background – and Giuseppe killed his own sons. I see no way that he could be in Damon, but he could be in Stefan, since he either died or was dying on screen when Stefan transitioned.

• Debbie

Great idea on daddy Salvatore, would be very interesting…but I’m thinking it’s more likely to be daddy Gilbert inside of Damon. They talked about his hatred for vamps earlier in the season but never really went anywhere with it so here’s their chance. Maybe when Damon was kidnapped by crazy Wes. Revenge on Damon, a chance to come face to face with his newly turned vamp daughter-can we say Caroline bill showdown again! Also, this could explain the serious delena talk that’s been spoiled in 5.20.

• lynne

I would venture Tyler’s Mother,,,,, John , Elena’s Uncle & her Father,,Dr. Wes,, Bonnie’s father,,Sheriff Forbes,,The pastor at the church that he blew up and APRIL!!!
Conner stabbed her twice in the church to entice the Vampires with the smell of blood and reveal them selves. She didn’t have a SL otherwise for being on the show unless she was sent there on purpose
What if ALL Hunters are W/T’s? That would include Jeremy also.!
Thoughts?

• amimi

Yes! There has always seemed to be something “off” about the humans/parents on the show. The ones you mention are so stoic and unmoved/emotionless when it comes to the vampires (well, with the exception of Sheriff Forbes)–indicating a kind of eerie calmness about the whole thing, like they’ve been doing this a really long time and they are not at all shocked or fearful of what they need to do to protect the town/their children.

• Debbie

April would be so funny! We didn’t have enough of her as a human!!!!

• Debbie

1000 arrows up Jennifer. I too was on the Stefan is not himself bandwagon, but now I just think the whole thing really sad to think one of the main characters was never himself , never had control of his own doings-not to mention what would be the point of his character anymore. I don’t want to be forced to question his every move since s1 even though a part of his past is a mystery.

• Cheryl12

No one is emphatically declaring that Stefan _has_ been _controlled_ since the beginning. In fact, who’s to say that the passenger persona always dominates in the shared body?
Here are 3 possibilities: 1) S. became a relentless killer/had blood lust out of the gate in 1864 for no particular reason – it was just the way he reacted immediately to becoming a vamp. (in contrast to Damon); 2) S. became a killing machine+ in 1864 (and beyond) for reasons yet to be explored; or 3) Stefan’s killer instincts aren’t entirely his own because he’s had a passenger on board influencing him from the get-go.
Stefan is a tragic figure no matter what IMO.

• Jennifer2667

Glad to know I’m not the only one who feels this way!

• lynne

The only reason I keep Sheriff Forbes in mind,, is b/c of her affinity to and for Damon.
She does have a soft spot for him:)
Crazy thought, What if Sheriff Forbes W/T was a protector of Damon? But Carolines father was of a different sector of the W/T?

• lynne

hahaha, Bex liked her, (she was easy to compel), and a somewhat friend. Matt, gave her his bracelet to wear, so he was fond of her. Elena with switch off, tried to bust her head open, but with switch on liked her.
I am convinced she was a W/T, but for the good group, make any sense?

• Jennifer2667

That’s exactly it, amimi. My rational response is above. My emotional response is what you wrote. I feel sad thinking Stefan’s personality, actions, etc. could’ve been manipulated at various times over the years. I like Stefan the way he is, flaws and all.

• Debbie

It wound be nice to have a nice guy normal character again, but I don’t think a young and innocent character would work anymore-too easy to kill and wouldn’t really fit in. The only reason why Matt says is because he’s so well liked , he knows how to stand up for himself, knows everything, is very smart and is apart of the scene. Young Outsiders really don’t belong, even if it’s for the greater good. Now good influence ric, that’s Someone I’d love to see!

• Jennifer2667

This is just the way I see it, but if a passenger is riding in a body, at any time they can be triggered by another Traveler’s words to take over. Maybe there are other ways as well, but that’s how Nadia triggered Gregor in Matt (Elena was the unusual case of full possession by spell). So, if at any time Stefan can become not-Stefan, I call that being controlled. He wouldn’t have to be possessed full-time to be controlled, imo. Now, for doors number 1,2 & 3…..;). I’m conventional when it comes to Stefan’s blood lust: he’s the proverbial alcoholic who took his first sip and couldn’t stop until abstinence. But, since it’s his food source, too, Damon and later Caroline were able to help him find the middle way. I find that option tragic enough for so many years, but with a happy ending for the moment. So, door number 1 for me, I suppose.

• Debbie

The only problem with #3 is where’s the boundary and how will that be defined? Did the paSsenger only help with the killings of his ripper days or also the murder of the prisoner in s4? Is he also responsible for his anger at Damon, and if so to what capacity? And who was Lexi in all this the passengers friend or Stefan’s? Same question with Elena, did she love Stefan or his passenger? It will be very hard, like Jennifer said, to find that line on what was the passengers doings and what was Stefan’s.

• Cheryl12

It’d certainly be hard to sort out all that mess – but isn’t that life in MF? We don’t even know when his passenger came on board, assuming there is one.

Don’t get me started on Ms. Lexi :-) They were together for long stretches at a time – we just don’t have exact dates. I don’t think she was entirely what she seemed to be, either.

But Stefan’s personality inconsistencies are glaring – and he seemed different still when he had amnesia. We have: 1) human S.; 2) transitioning S.; 3) new vamp S.; 4) “1912″ Stefan who morphed into The Rippah w/in that FB; 5) rebabbed 1942 S.; 6) S. Prime beginning in S1; and 7) S5 amnesiac S. What will 1960 [forthcoming FB] S. be like? Will the real Stefan please stand up?

• lynne

Sounds about right, lolol
Here is another one,, What if the rings that were made, to protect the family,, worked perfectly fine,, until a W/T became involved.
When Stefan and Damon went to the boxing match too see Sage,, Damon told Stefan to pick someone. Stefan picked (can’t remember her name, but I think she was a Gilbert) They followed the woman to the Cemetery. Stefan fed on her so much,, her head came off. NOW,,, she was wearing a ring but the boy’s didn’t know about the ring , nor who she was.. Stefan put her head back on while saying “Oh God,, what have I done,, oH My God” while Damon is walking and or pulling him away. The woman awakens, but from here all we have is what was written in her diary.
The woman claims to have voices in her head AND she committed suicide in an Asylum?
What if she had a W?T in her when Stefan fed on her? Would that spark a revenge or open a door/window for the T/W?
.

• lynne

lololol That is really good!!
” Will the real Stefan please stand up”
Now Stay!!, That’s a good boy! lololol

• Cheryl12

Agree as to the portrayal of the Nadia/Gregor situation – she was fully aware of Gregor’s status & called him forth. We also saw Gregor (in control) on tape warning Matt about the knife. Kat’s passengering in Elena certainly was not benign. But could a passenger just sorta ride along benignly for long periods of time? Possibly.
So who’s keeping track of all these passengers? No one’s wearing “Passenger on Board” T’s :-|
Never bought the S. is like an alcoholic analogy. I think the key to his particular problem lies in the differential details of the brothers’ death story.

• lynne

Carolines Father was creepy. He hated vampires but he couldn’t be compelled witch had nothing to do with vervane. I always thought he was involved with Augustine or something even creepier if possible.
That is a pretty good take, but the kids are vampires now. So wouldn’t that Piss Off the ancestral W/T descendents theory?
Mattie said that his Mother was dysfunctional in her personality and habits. Any guesses as to having a traveler inside her? or just “Cuckoo” ?

• Gwen

Wow great discussion…looks like we opened a can of worms…

If Giuseppe was a passenger I do not believe Kat. brought him forth too often but enough for him to check in on his sons or check in with the other travelers (Giuseppe was a history buff, I am sure he knew all about his bloodline possible all the way back to Silas and the travelers). Stefan just seemed so carefree, happy and totally in love with Kat as a human, but once he turned he turned into a monster/ ripper, forced Damon to turn, and was reckless at times (leaving dead bodies all over the house..drawing attention etc…). Like Car. once said turning into a vampire should not completely change who you are. I think Stefan’s transition was significant…when Damon turned he still resembled his human self and was still in love with Kat.

Question – Did Stefan “journal” as a human? We know Giuseppe had a journal and that Stefan, I believe, was the only one to read it.

• Debbie

Oh we have many of the same ideas..Lexi 100% yes (don’t get me started either!), Stefan inconsistent, absolutely. And yes, it would be nice to get answers to these questions, I just think this is a little too drastic of an answer- Stefan is a mystery because he’s not Stefan…sounds a little harsh..

• Gwen

Wow, one of few…but I disagree…I still believe it is Stefan that has the mysterious passenger… and not Damon

Not sure I follow but didn’t Daddy Gilbert (Elena’s father right?) died at the Wickery Bridge…the only person at the scene of the accident was Stefan that night

Also another clue…in one S5E18…Damon is both relieved and disturbed by what Markos has to say…

• Debbie

I like the way you’re thinking, it’s an interesting thought. The problem I’m having is their have been so many inconsistencies ESP in the past couple of years that you can question anything that way…

• lynne

where i was going with the voices thought was? B/C of the ring, I thought the lady could here Stefan & Damon talking as they were leaving and it just kept replaying in her head. BUT,, What if she heard the W/T chanting in there own language?

• lynne

I have always though Daddy G. was involved with Augustine.
We know that the W/T has been involved with Augustine or the grounds it sits on, IE the caves & tunnels and most likely from the very beginning,, and that would bring full circle back to Stefan. Thoughts?
Could the College be sitting on sacred or ritual ground?

• Gwen

And climbing…impressive!!

• shoe20

Have you noticed Elena doesn’t simile
anymore… she hasn’t since the SB in S4. Plenty of ILU’s for Damon, but no “you make me happy”. Damon is Elena’s addiction, (a behavior once indulged, can never be satiated) that is exactly how DE has been represented. Elena’s starting the 12 step program by realizing how toxic their relationship is for her. Elena admits her addiction in 516.
D: “I thought you broke my heart, so I ripped open Arron’s neck, that’s how much control you have over me”
E: “and I’m still here that’s how much control you have over me”

and again in 517 when she tells Damon she wouldn’t be able to resist taking his hand on the car ride…..she’s finally realizes she has no control…who says the SB is over? LOL DE is the classic co-dependent relationship…. with Elena as the enabler. Elena is also the classic “battered woman” but the abuse is mental rather than physical. I’m sure her obsession over DE’s relationship is part of her withdrawal. Let’s see if Stefan is honorable and doesn’t take advantage like Damon did when SE broke up.

• Jennifer2667

Lol! Maybe Sloan is the tracker. She seems to be Markos’ biggest fan and go-to gal. My opinion is a passenger could live without surfacing. The only reasons I can think of for doing this is 1) jumping into another body to stay alive (but then what, live out someone’s life with the other person in charge?), or 2) whiling away time until activated for a specific purpose. That’s what I think is happening in MF now, passengers waiting to be activated so they can force characters to change sides and help them (Tyler appears to be in this category). Passengers don’t have total control though as we saw with Kat/Elena.

TVD may decide to change the reason for Stefan’s response to blood, however, JP & PW have consistently referred to it as an addiction and finding moderation.

• Cheryl12

Yes, w/ all this passengering, someone must be keeping track. Yes, that the spell as to Kat’s control was final: she was permanently sealed in Elena’s body per Mia. Only the knife (as far as we know) could and did extract her.
Waiting for activation = suitably creepy and meaning that anyone who has been compromised could switch sides w/o warning.
I gotta think that includes Stefan, the question being just _when_ someone might have hopped on board. Now I’m wondering how they are going to parse the S5 cliffhanger: will they resolve the Other Side situation fully (most likely), but carry over the Travelers threatening to take control (again, quite likely)?
On Stefan’s blood lust+: If we had seen or knew of at least 1 other vamp. so afflicted, I _might_ buy the addiction explanation, and we’d know if could be a “thing,” but it would still seem somehow trite/lazy storytelling. And it just does not make sense from an evolutionary perspective that a vampire could have a literal physiologically-based addiction to that which is his/her intended primary food source.
