IMG DESCI think we can all agree that the Grim Reaper pretty much lives in Mystic Falls. People die all over this town! They die at dances, at parties, in their houses and out in the woods. There’s so much death going around that a fair number of characters get to experience it multiple times in different ways! With all this wacky expiring going on, it’s high time we gave The Grim Reaper his due on a job well done and vote on the Best Death Scenes in Season 2.

Now, because there are so many awesomely dreadful demises to choose from, we’re splitting this up into two parts – major and minor characters. Which major player will take home the Golden Gravestone this week? Check out your choices below!

A Visitor's Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire DiariesAnd here’s an added bonus: Leave a comment on this post that makes a case for your pick and you’ll be automatically entered to win a copy of A Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls: Your Favorite Authors on The Vampire Diaries (co-edited by us and Leah Wilson), courtesy of Smart Pop Books. You have until Tuesday, June 28th at midnight ET to have your comment count as an entry. We’ll also only be counting ONE comment per person, but feel free to discuss away in the comments.

EDIT: Egads! I forgot Caroline! Commenters who pointed this out, you’re totally right! She’s definitely a major character and she did die in Season 2, she should absolutely have been on this list. My only excuse is that I’m so focused on keeping Caroline alive forever that my brain shies away from associating her with death in any way. You should be able to vote for her now if you want to, I apologize profusely for leaving her out.

Which Major Character Had The Best Death In Season 2?

I love that Jeremy and Elijah have been killed multiple times..but just keep coming back for more haha. I voted Elijah by Elena because it was Elena’s first kill ! She proved she could be a major badass and it was so unexpected !!

    You bet he will! :)

This was very easy for me, Rose and the beautiful dream with Damon. The Descent was my favorite ep from the season, just because of that scene. Next would have been John’s death.

  • Anonymous

If there had not been the dream with Rose, John would have been my pick and your comment was perfect. I cry every time I hear his letter and I LOVE his voice.

You hit the nail on the head and the surprises the writers keep throwing at us is the reason that TVD is my favorite show ever. That is saying something because I loved Veronica Mars, Buffy, Roswell and still love Supernatural and White Collar, but we have the best writers anywhere.

You are TOTALLY RIGHT about Caroline! Mea culpa! Ten thousand apologies, I’ve fixed the oversight. She’s just so awesome as a vampire I forget that she had to die to become one!

  • Anonymous

I believe the werewolf stabbed Ric in Crying Wolf.

  • Anonymous

I was not a Jenna fan at all, and would not have cried when she died if Elena had not told her to “turn it off”, that got me and the tears started.

  • Emeri

COME ON, Rose, for real? One of the Jeremy options should be winning this easily! Preferably the neck snap – I mean, I know it was a fake out, but it was completely and utterly shocking, and extremely well acted by Dobrev and Somerhalder. One of the best scenes in the entire show if you ask me.

Also, props to Caroline’s pillow-death in 2×01, because, damn, was it bad-ass! Our girl Kat sure knows how to make an entrance!

  • Emeri

BTW, cindychandler you sumed up Damon snapping Jeremy’s neck perfectly!

I voted for Rose. I think her death, was by far the most beautiful, heartwrenching, and sad scene, of all the series i have ever seen. (And trust me- I’ve seen A LOT!)
The scene was just absolutely perfect, and why would I explain? I think it’s obvious, but here it is..
Rose went absolutely insane from the werewolf bite, and she almost killed Elena. I had a lot of sympathy for her when that happened, because she just couldn’t control herself, and then she fell into self-hate. Poor her. Elena asked Damon if Rose would die, and when he said yes, he seemed completely unswerving!! Was a bit mad at him. /:
But then the whole situation just escalated, and Damon compelled her a Dream, in which she would be home. The Music, the area, the characters, PERFECT! The conversation between Rose and Damon was more than meaningful, and the part that brings me to tears everytime is when we realize that Damon really cares about Rose, and to release her from her pain, he kills her. Just thinking about it, almost makes me cry.

i agree Rose death was touching and beautiful but also tragic !!1 Damon showed such a kindness by taking her to her favorite spot and then staking her .He looked so devastated once she had died .The whole scene was so sad and very poignant !!!

Roses’s death scene was one of the most saddest things i ever watched although rose what not a majourly big charecter she still had a big part in season two and she was the one that made damon open up to his feelings when the single tear dropped from damon’s eye when he was about to stake her that was the saddest thing we had never seen damo cry that then lead to him confesing to the girl on the road that he missed being human my point i am trying to make is Rose was a big charecter and her death scene will always make me cry

  • Karen

I think the best death was Rose by Damon.  Her death was actually drawn out over several very well done episodes.  The moment her werewolf bite began to spread over her skin and through her mind she began her slow death.  The bite made Rose do things she would never had done in her right mind – and she regretted all the bad actions when she came back to her right mind.  It was beautiful how Damon took care of Rose, because he really cared for her.  No one could have been more gentle or kind to Rose.  He listened to her and granted her wish to go home.  And once he had done all her could to comfort Rose, Damon did the kindest thing of all by staking her and preventing any more misery.  I cried for it was beautiful to see how deeply Damon cared for Rose and how far he went to make her death as easy as he could.

  • Lindsay

What about Katherine whenever she turned into a vampire…ooh and Trevor when Elijah was totally badass and sliced his head off haha ;)

  • Vee

The drama was intense, I didn’t like to see her go as I liked her character

LOL, I sobbed so hard, I had my parrot crying with me, in fact I can not watch a youtube video with that scene in it without crying.  Ian was perfect and the dream was beautiful.

  • Anonymous

I think the part that threw Damon over the edge was having to put Rose in his trunk and show her to Liz, then the awful ending where he killed Jessica.  I do hope she is put in the deaths next week.  Damon felt so guilty because it was supposed to be him and not Rose that got bitten.  Damn, Ian does have Damon down perfectly.

  • http://twitter.com/xXxThasleemaxXx Thasleema Nisar

my vote goes to rose because Damon staked her in the most romantic place and it was really emotional

  • Rachel

Definitely Rose.  It’s the only death scene listed that made me cry.

  • Karen

I’m sure I’m not the only person to have pointed this out on here, but…while I agree that Rose’s death was pretty fantastic (story-wise), I would have to argue with her being counted as a “major character.”  She certainly was an important part of the story, but so were Luka, Jonas and Uncle Mason, all of whom were in more episodes than Rose.  I would make the same argument for Isobel, but at least she was a reoccurring character.  I know there could be endless debate about “major” vs. “minor,” but I still think this one is iffy, guys.

Also, I noticed that only one of John’s deaths was listed here.  Remember John died twice this season.  Isobel killed him and tossed him down the stairs at the Lockwood Mansion.  But maybe you’re only focusing on epic deaths, and frankly, that one was kind of unmemorable.  I think that mostly it was a venue for letting Carol and Liz in on the secret of the magic rings of not dying.

    Anyway, that’s my two cents.

i vote rose! i think that’s the saddest death personally to me :( i even cried WOW!!
    R.I.P rose!!

  • Mel

    My vote goes to Rose.
The dream scene conjured by Damon showed that he actually cared, despite his numerous denials. The way it timed with Rose counting down the seconds she had to live and Damon drivingthe stake through her heart was an amazing touch. While I had wanted Rose to go I wasn’t expecting it to happen the way it did and I was pleasantly surprised. It was my favorite death scene in the show (from both seasons).

I voted for Elena and Caroline, but I really think that major deaths were the ones of Jenna and Rose. Jenna was a favorite one of mine, sadly they killed her. Boy, I was really sad when I saw the scene. :( But to be honest Caroline and Elena’s death were important for the plot and I’m glad they kept Caroline, with all after that happened, Katherine and stuff. WOW!!

i think that Jenna’s death was so tragic and i really think very brave when John sacrificed himself to save Elena. They were both very brave. But Rose’s death…Damon was so sad when he did it.And he created this amazing dream in order for her to be happy before she died…almost every death on the show makes you sad but Rose’s death was even a way to see that Damon cares for other people (or vampires) too…

This was so difficult! Partly because of all the “great” (heart-breaking) choices but also because I over-analyze EVERYTHING TVD, blame the writers for giving me so much to ponder.

There are so many definitions of best, but I went with Jenna. If being turned, then sacrificed, via stake in the heart, by the most terrifying all powerful Hybrid doesn’t earn the award, then I’m at a loss. It was scary & drawn out, she got to ponder her demise and Klaus enjoying so much made it extra creepy. Plus, Jenna did not come back in anyway shape or form, so it was a true loss.

Rose was the most beautiful death scene, for her back story & the way it was shot. Jeremy’s via Damon neck-snapping was the most horrifying. I still jump on re-watches. Caroline was also on my list of possibles, since Kat plays so dirty, & because it was such a game-changer. But ultimately Jenna wins in my book!

  • http://twitter.com/mylobster27 Becca Leigh

It was truly horrifying to watch as well!

  • http://twitter.com/Tarnishedheart Mitali

Jenna was a character full of potential. When I saw she had been turned I didn’t have much hope she would survive. I was worried she would just be killed off quickly without much fuss. Was what made her death epic that it was commited by the most hyped up character of the season? Was it dramatic because of the raging fire? Because it came after one last ditch attempt to save Elena? While all these contributed to it, no. What made this death scene the best was Elena’s raw reaction to the horror of watching Jenna die and the incredible amount of emotion when she told her to just turn it off. Elena’s seen many…many…many people die but this just seemed to have the most impact and because Nina played it so well you were right there with her.

Didn’t get to vote but Elijah’s death via Alaric

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001849167334 Radvile Elena Zinkeviciute

I vote for Rose and Jeremy. Rose becouze i liked her, and i cried when Damon staked her. And Jeremy becouze it was a totally shock when Liz shot him.
