XX Previously on The Vampire Diaries, Paul Wesley got to direct! Huge congratulations and props from all of us to Paul on his directorial debut. Lots of cool stuff (visual and otherwise!) in this episode, definitely worth a closer look before the next episode, Man On Fire (EP519) airs tonight at 8/7c.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from this show over the past five seasons, it’s to never trust a prophecy. Resident Evil marks the directorial debut of Paul Wesley, and the guy got stuck with not only presenting us the usual complicated TVD reality, but the Other Side in flux and a fantasy-life world that never was. And luckily for us, he knows exactly what he’s doing.

True love is a lie, man. A lie!

All right, maybe not, but the prophecy of true doppelganger love turns out to be as fake as the Sun and Moon curse, a construct created by the Travelers to fool unsuspecting doppelgangers with romantic notions into coming together so the Travelers could then harvest their blood. Considering the Travelers have been attempting to do this for thousands of years and are just now having success, let me just suggest: Perhaps this was a terrible, no good plan?

So… that’s what Markos wants, huh? To take over Mystic Falls?
And that’s what Damon wants, to no longer be close to Elena?
But did The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 18 give fans everything they wanted?

Did you know that Paul “Wesley” Wasilewski directed this episode? I’m not playing games, guys, there was some very noticeable visual poetry going on here, from the angles to the editing, and Stefan’s hair looked especially well-lit. He should direct more episodes? But the script was really good too, he got a good’un, and it all started with a fake-out!
